Notes: Summary Dehydration with 2,2-dimethoxypropane acidified with either 1 N HCL or 0.05 N HCL in an 1:100 ratio has been found to extract various biologically active lipids. The effect is enhanced by an increased proton concentration and seems to occur only after complete H2O transformation. It is suggested that lipid extraction is caused by a reoxidation of lower osmium oxides with subsequent attack on the unfixed lipids by the organic solvent DMP.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In a polydiagnostic study, a systematically recruited collective of 34 women with a first-episode postpartum psychosis was reexamined after a period of 6–26 years (averaging 12.6 years) in order to establish lifetime-diagnoses according to ICD-10 and Leonhard's classification, and to determine course and outcome. According to ICD-10, unipolar depressive disorders (32%) and acute polymorphous psychotic disorders (28%) represented the most frequent diagnoses. Applying Leonhard's classification revealed a marked predominance of cycloid psychoses (62%) with the subform of motility psychosis being the most frequent diagnosis (38%). Schizophrenias occurred rarely according to both classifications. Investigating the long-term course, we found in 59% multiphasic disorders. The mean number of episodes per patient was 2.5 (range 2–6) with a mean duration of 9.8 weeks (SD=5.2). 6 patients (18%) had undergone a monophasic course, in 4 cases (12%) the course was not determinable. 17 women (50%) had 19 further deliveries during the follow-up period. The frequency of relapses in connection with a further delivery was 47%. Administering the Strauss-Carpenter-Outcome-Scale revealed a favourable outcome with a mean value of 14.1 (SD=2.83) for our total sample. Only 4 patients (12%) had never recovered fully since the onset of the illness. Our findings suggest that cycloid psychoses, in particular motility psychoses, account for the majority of postpartum psychoses, and do not support the hypothesis of a nosological independence of postpartum psychoses. They provide further evidence of a favourable prognosis of severe postpartum psychiatric disorder despite a relatively high rate of non-puerperal and especially puerperal relapses.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es bestehen Hinweise auf einen Zusammenhang zwischen Thrombocyten-Monoaminoxidase (MAO) und verschiedenen psychopathologischen Symptomen.
Notes: Summary Activity of platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) has repeatedly been reported to be associated with various forms of psychopathology. This investigation was designed to reexamine the “biochemical high-risk paradigm” developed by Buchsbaum et al. (1976). In 383 healthy students (193 males, 190 females) platelet MAO activity was measured. The 35 students with the lowest and 37 with the highest enzyme activities were then examined with three personality tests (16 PF of Cattell, Freiburger Persönlichkeitsinventar, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). Furthermore, biographic data with respect to psychosocial problems were explored. There were no consistent differences between subjects with low or high platelet MAO. Therefore, we could not confirm any correlation between psychopathology and platelet MAO in this study.

Notes: Abstract In recent years neuroimaging techniques have revealed various cerebral and structural variances in patients with schizophrenic psychoses. The best established findings are the enlargement of the lateral ventricles and discrete structural deficits in temporobasal structures of the cortex. Neuropathological investigations have detected subcortical as well as cortical variances. Subcortically, the volume of the striatum and the globus pallidus have been found to be enlarged in schizophrenics. Among the cortical deviations, the cytoarchitectonic disturbances of the rostral entorhinal region have been well documented and are especially important. According to neuropathological criteria, they are derived from disturbances of prenatal cell migration within the central nervous system. Well documented are the architectonic changes in the rostral cingulate gyrus which is itself connected with the entorhinal region via the Papez circuit. These findings are supported and supplemented by the results of epidemiological studies which indicate a disturbance of brain development during the second trimester of the prenatal period. Viral infections (Influenza A2) of mothers during this critical period appear to play an especially important role. Nevertheless, the interaction between a genetic predisposition and exogenous noxious agents in such cases still needs to be clarified in our understanding of the etiology of schizophrenic psychoses.

Notes: A new device for resistivity logging has been developed with a doubly focussed system. It resembles a simplified double set of microlaterologs. The diagram of the log shows the formation resistivity factor of the sediments on the sea floor. The probe is trailed after the logging boat on a cable with at least two or four cores. The penetration of this log is better than 10 cm. The log is used for resistivity mapping, and it could be used for the exploration of heavy minerals and managese nodules.

Notes: Summary Clinical and experimental work indicates that cholinergic functions might play a role in modulating affactivity in man. In this acute double-blind study either the cholinolytic agent biperiden or placebo infusions were administered to six depressed females. The Janke and Debus self-rating questionnaire (EWL-K), the modified Hamilton depression scale (HAM-D), and the Montgomery and Asberg depression scale (MADRS) were used for documentation of psychopathological change. There was an acute antidepressant effect during infusion of the active drug in comparison to placebo as measured on the global MADRS and EWL-K, but not on the modified HAM-D. Single items such as depressed mood, work and interests (HAM-D), sadness, concentration difficulties, inability to feel (MADR-S), and depressiveness (EWL-K) responded selectively and significantly to the biperiden infusion. It is concluded that cholinergic activity might be involved in the regulation of affectivity in man.

Notes: Summary It has been suggested that phenylethylamine (PEA) may play a role in the modulation of affective behavior. The aim of the present study was to test this hypothesis. Urinary PEA excretion was determined in 32 drug-free healthy volunteers, and the MMPI was used for personality assessment. In support of this hypothesis, a significant positive correlation between PEA and hypomania (r = 0.50; P 〈 0.05) and a significant negative correlation between PEA and depression (r = −0.58; P 〈 0.01) was observed in the female subgroup. Furthermore, PEA correlated significantly negatively with hypochondriasis (r = −0.65; P 〈 0.01), paranoia (r = 0.49; P 〈 0.05), and social introversion (r = −0.60; P 〈 0.05). These results are the first evidence in normal individuals either that PEA itself might play a role in the modulation of affective behaviour, or alternatively that PEA could be related to mechanisms responsible for the modulation of affective behavior.
