    Notes: novel duplex coating is presented on steel substrate by laser discrete quenching prior tochromium coating deposition. Due to the periodical changes in the mesostructures and properties ofunderlying substrate, the cracking and spalling behaviors of the duplex coating are expected to bedifferent from that of conventional coating. A classic erosion experiment is selected to characterizethe positive response of the duplex coating subjected to thermal loads. It is found that the surfacecracking is partly restrained and the interface cracking is partly arrested. FEM modeling resultsshow that a unique stress state is induced in the duplex coating with the tempering of the discretepre-quenched regions due to thermal loading, which is believed to be the mechanism of controllingthe damage modes

    Notes: Abstract The influence of Sn doping on superconductivity in the Bi-based 2212 phase is studied in this paper. For the samples R–T relations and magnetic hysteresis loops were measured. X-ray powder diffraction analysis was also performed. For Bi1.75Pb0.25Sr2CaCu2.3−x Sn x O y , the experimental results show that by adding the proper amount of Sn the superconductivity of the samples can be improved. As x = 0.15, the critical temperature T c, the critical current density J c, and the magnetic pinning force density F reach a maximum. At T = 11 K, the critical state parameters H c1, H c2, κ, λ, and ξ are calculated and compared with the results reported by other researchers. The experimental results also show that the Sn doping is able to speed up the growth of the 2223 phase. In brief, Sn doping is an effective way of improving the superconductivity in Bi-based superconductors.

    Notes: Abstract The existence of twin domains in YBa2(Cu1−x Co x )3O y samples was confirmed by many experiments. However, the physical picture of the twin domains has not been reported up to now. By analyzing oxygen content, Cu and Co valences, and Co coordination in those samples, we propose a domain model, which consists of two pairs of parallel zigzag Co-O chains surrounding orthorhombic cells, one along (110) direction and the other along (110) direction. The zigzag Co-O chains are the twin walls, with neighboring walls perpendicular and the opposite ones parallel. The distance between parallel walls (i.e., zigzag Co-O chains) depends upon Co concentration of sample. The twin domain model predicts the geometry, size, and absence of systematic symmetry of the domains. The model also predicts the modulation periodicity of electron diffraction patterns, which depends on Co concentration. All the predictions by the model agree well with the experimental results reported in literatures. Furthermore, the model indicates the possible existence of two domains, which have incommensurable modulation periodicity.

    Notes: Abstract It is significant to study the problems how the tetragonal and orthorhombic structures of YBa2Cu3O y generate, since the structures closely relate to superconductivity. To deal with these problems, we approach the generation of tetragonal and orthorhombicity and their morphologies by SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. For interpreting the experimental phenomena, we put forward a crystal growth modal: the tetragonal grows at sintering temperatures, and the tetragonal transits to orthorhombicity and forms twins along [110] faces at annealing temperatures. This model agrees with experimental results well.

    Notes: Abstract Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis caused by coxsackievirus A24 variant (CA24v) first appeared in Taiwan in October 1985, followed by two other sequential epidemics in 1986 and 1988. In order to know the evolutionary relationship of the CA24v strains isolated in Taiwan, we first determined the nucleotide sequence of the 3C proteinase (3Cpro) region of the prototype strain (EH24/70), isolated in Singapore in 1970, by molecular cloning. The nucleotide sequence of the 3Cpro region thus sequenced showed striking homology with polioviruses and coxsackievirus A21. Viral RNA of eight isolates obtained from the three epidemics was reverse transcribed, amplified by the polymerase chain reaction, and cloned into M13 phage for the production of ssDNA for nucleotide sequencing by the dideoxy chain termination method. When the number of nucleotide difference was taken as a genetic distance between isolates, all isolates showed a very similar distance from the EH24/70, the earliest isolate of CA24v, indicating that they evolved at a constant evolutionary rate. Phylogenetic analysis by the unweighted pairwise grouping method of arithmetic average (UPGMA) indicated that the six isolates collected in 1985 and 1986 were closely related, while two 1988 isolates were more distant from them. The branching time between these two groups was estimated to be May 1984, 18 months before the first recognition of the CA24v epidemic in Taiwan. This is the first report of the nucleotide sequence of CA24v genome RNA and of an evolutionary analysis of the virus using the nucleotide sequence.

    Notes: Abstract The crystal growth and crystal morphology are very important properties of YBa2Cu3O y superconductors. In this work, we approach these problems with polycrystals. Several typical crystal morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the terraced crystals with a layer-by-layer structure were found to be the major form for the well-grown YBa2Cu3O y . To interpret the results, a step-growth model was proposed. In this model, each crystal terrace is close-packed with crystal particles in order. And the particles, each consisting of tens of crystal cells, are movable during crystal growth. Particles at edges or margins of small crystals can move to their larger neighboring crystals through diffusion. With this particle diffusion, small crystals vanish and large crystals grow larger. This proposed model is confirmed by experimental observations.
