    Notes: Diffusion coefficient and solubility of Irganox 1076 antioxidant in different ethylene polymers (LDPE, LDPE/LLDPE blend, and EVA) were studied between 45 and 80°C. For correct evaluation of the results, physical characteristics of the polymers and the additive were determined as a function of temperature. Good correlation was found between the diffusion rate of the additive and the free volume of the noncrystalline phase in the polymer. Measured solubilities were much higher than reported in the literature. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: Auf der Basis von Hostalit H-9970 (Hoechst AG) hergestellte schlagfeste Polymeren-Systeme wurden durch dielektrische Depolarisationsspektroskopie untersucht. Die in Abhängigkeit von der Temperatur aufgenommenen Depolarisationsspektren wurden mit den dynamisch mechanischen und dielektrischen Relaxationsspektren und mit thermomechanischen Kurven verglichen. Ein enger Zusammenhang wurde zwischen den dielektrischen Depolarisationsmaxima und den durch die mechanische und dielektrische Spektroskopie gemessenen Strukturumwandlungen beobachtet.
    Notes: Toughened PVC systems prepared on the basis of Hostalit H-9970 (Hoechst AG) were studied by dielectric depolarization spectroscopy. The spectra obtained as a function of the temperature were compared with dynamic mechanical and dielectric relaxation spectra and with thermomechanical curves. The dielectric depolarization peaks were found to correlate with the structural transitions measured by mechanical and dielectric spectroscopy.

    Description / Table of Contents: Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden drei verschiedene Meßmethoden für die Bestim-mung der Kristallinität von Polyethylen angewandt. HDPE, LLDPE und LDPE-Pro-ben wurden  -  nach verschiedener Vorbehandlung  -  durch Dichtebestimmung, DSC und Raman-Spektroskopie untersucht. Die mit verschiedenen Methoden gewonnenen Resultate wurden verglichen, und Korrelationen wurden bestimmt.
    Notes: In this work three different techniques were used to determine the crystallinity of polyethylene. After different pretreatment HDPE, LLDPE, and LPDE samples were investigated by density measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, and Raman spectroscopy. The results were compared and relationships were estabilished between the values measured by the different methods.

    Notes: Transport properties of antioxidants in polymers have a very important role in their effectiveness. Lifetime of a product is strongly influenced by the physical loss of the stabilizer. The diffusion coefficient (D) and solubility (S) of Irganox 1010 in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were studied at 45 and 80°C, changing the physical state of the antioxidant in the additive source. Irganox 1010 is a polymorphous material; its actual morphology depends on the thermal history. It was proved that the morphology of the additive has a determining effect on the measured D and S values. Contradictions in the literature data can be explained by the differences in the experimental conditions, i.e., in the physical state of the penetrant in the additive source and the crystallinity and orientation of the polymer.

    Notes: Transport properties of Topanol CA, [1,1,3-tris(2-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-phenyl)-butane], were studied in low-density polyethylene (LDPE), in a blend of low-density and linear low-density polyethylenes (LDPE/LLDPE) and in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The rate of diffusion (D) was evaluated on the free-volume theory basis. A linear relationship was obtained between In D and the reciprocal fractional free volume of the noncrystalline phase of the polymers. Solubility of the additive is higher in EVA than in polyethylene. Compatibility of Topanol CA with ethylene polymers is poor, the measured solubility values depend on the experimental conditions and thermal history of the additive source. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: Polyolefine sind bekannt für ihre hohe Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber Chemikalien. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, daß sowohl chemische als auch physikalische Einwirkungen von Chemikalien zu Veränderungen der ursprünglich vorteilhaften Polymereigenschaften führen können. Im Fall von HCl- und NH4OH-Lösungen sind diese Wechselwirkungen eher gering. Gleichzeitig müssen aber bei der Lagerung von hochreinen organischen Flüssigkeiten einige Einschränkungen berücksichtigt werden. So können, abgesehen von extremen Reinheitsanforderungen, die in dieser Arbeit untersuchten Chemikalien mit Ausnahme von Freon TF, in Gefäßen aus Polyolefinen gelagert werden.
    Notes: Polyolefins are known to be highly resistant towards chemicals. It is shown, however, that both chemical and physical interactions take place between them which lead to changes in the initial advantageous properties. The interactions are rather slight in the case of HCl and NH4OH solutions. At the same time several limitations must be considered in the storage of high purity organic liquid chemicals. Apart from electronic grade, however, the organic reagents used in this study except from Freon TF may be stored in vessels made of polyolefins.
