    Notes: Abstract The geometric theory of partial differential equations due to E. Cartan is applied to atomic systems in order to solve the many-body problems and to obtain the binding energies of electrons in an atom. The procedure consists in defining a Schrödinger equation over an Euclidean patch which overlaps with other Euclidean patches in a specified way to form a manifold. If the energy of the system has to be a minimum, it is shown using the Dirichlet principle that the coordinate systems are related by the Cauchy-Riemann relations. The invariance of the Schrödinger equations in the overlapping region leads to a nonlinear second-order equation which is invariant to automorphic transformations and whose solutions are doubly periodic functions. There are only two possible single-valued solutions to this nonlinear partial differential equation and these correspond to lattices of points in the complex space, which are (a) corners of an array of equilateral triangles, and (b) corners of an array of isosceles right-angled triangles. The first solution was used in an earlier work to derive many static properties of nuclei. In this paper it is shown that the second solution gives binding energies of atoms in agreement of about 3% for the few experimental points that are available and also in good agreement with the binding energies of atoms obtained by the perturbation theory. It is also shown that this lattice under certain approximations is equivalent to a pure Coulomb law and the Bohr orbits of the hydrogen atom are correctly predicted. In obtaining the binding energies of atoms, no free parameters are required in the theory, except for the value of the binding energy of the He atom, as the theory is developed only for spinless systems. All other constants turn out to be fundamental constants.

    Notes: Abstract Cartan's geometric theory of partial differential equations is applied to a system of Schrödinger equations. It is shown that the choice of a Riemann manifold which is a torus is equivalent to using a many-body neutron and proton potential commonly used in nuclear theory. The theory is applied to spinless, ground-state systems using the Dirichlet principle to minimise the energy, to obtain the neutron-proton ratios, Coulomb and binding energies of nuclei. A shell structure naturally manifests itself from the choice of the manifold.

    Notes: Abstract  A closed loop identification method of Hammerstein model for continuous bioreactor with input multiplicity is proposed. Hammerstein model consists of nonlinear steady-state gain followed by a unity gain linear system. The method consists of first getting local first order plus time delay (FOPTD) models around the two input multiplicity values of the substrate feed concentration. The model parameters of the FOPTD is identified by a least square optimization method. The initial guess for the model parameters are obtained from the settling time, the initial delay in the closed loop servo response and using a simple proportional controller formula. From the local process gain values obtained for the several step changes around the two operating conditions, the nonlinear gain portion of the Hammerstein is then obtained. The actual nonlinear gain and the identified nonlinear gain is compared.

    Description: Introduction: There is a risk of transmission of viruses and microbial pathogens during routine health care procedures due to improper injection, infusion, and medication-vial practices. Unsafe practices lead to outbreaks of infection resulting in unacceptable and devastating events in patients. The present study was undertaken to assess the compliance of nurses with safe injection and infusion practices in our hospital and to identify staff education requirements in relation to the safe-injection and infusion practices policy.Methods: Baseline data were collected and high risk areas were identified on this basis, a quality improvement project was implemented by infection control team. FOCUS PDCA methodology was used to conduct the improvement process. The study was performed from March to September 2021. An audit checklist based on the CDC guidelines was used for monitoring compliance with safe injection and infusion practices. Results: Poor compliance with safe injection and infusion practices in few clinical areas at baseline. During the pre-intervention period, non-compliance was mainly seen with the following elements: aseptic technique (79%), rubber septum disinfected with alcohol (66%), labelling of all IV lines and medications with date and time (83%), compliance with multidose-vial policy (77%), use of multidose vials for single patient (84%), safe disposal of sharps (84%), using trays instead of clothing/pockets to carry medications (81%).There was significant improvement in compliance with the following elements of safe injection and infusion practices in the post-intervention period: aseptic technique (94%), rubber septum disinfected with alcohol (83%), compliance with multidose-vial policy (96%), use of multidose vials for single patient only (98%), safe disposal of sharps (96%).Conclusion: Adherence to safe injection and infusion practices is very important to prevent outbreaks of infection in health care settings.
    Description: Einführung: Im Fall unsachgemäßer Injektion, Infusion und fehlerhaften Umgangs mit Medikamenten besteht das Risiko der Übertragung von Viren und Mikroorganismen. Fehlerhafte Praktiken können zum Ausbruch von Infektionen mit drastischen Folgen für die Patienten führen. Die vorliegende Studie wurde durchgeführt, um die Einhaltung sicherer Injektions- und Infusionspraktiken in unserem Krankenhaus durch das Pflegepersonal zu bewerten und den Schulungsbedarf des Personals zu ermitteln.Methoden: Die Analyse der Ausgangssituation ergab eine schlechte Einhaltung sicherer Injektions- und Infusionspraktiken in einigen klinischen Bereichen. In den identifizierten Bereichen mit hohem Risiko wurde vom Infektionskontrollteam ein Qualitätsverbesserungsprojekt etabliert. Zur Durchführung wurde die FOCUS PDCA-Methode verwendet. Die Studie erstreckte sich von März bis September 2021. Zur Überwachung der Einhaltung sicherer Injektions- und Infusionspraktiken wurde eine Audit-Checkliste auf der Grundlage der CDC-Richtlinien verwendet.Ergebnisse: Während der Zeit vor der Intervention wurde die Nichteinhaltung hauptsächlich in Bezug auf folgende Elemente festgestellt: Aseptische Technik (79%), mit Alkohol desinfiziertes Gummiseptum (66%), Kennzeichnung aller Infusionsleitungen und Medikamente mit Datum und Uhrzeit (83%), Einhaltung der Richtlinie für Mehrdosisfläschchen (77%), Verwendung von Mehrdosisfläschchen für einen einzelnen Patienten (84%), sichere Entsorgung von scharfen Gegenständen (84%), Tragen von Medikamenten in Kleidung/Taschen anstatt auf dem Tablett (81%).Es gab eine signifikante Verbesserung bei der Einhaltung der folgenden Elemente sicherer Injektions- und Infusionspraktiken nach der Intervention: Aseptische Technik (94%), mit Alkohol desinfiziertes Gummiseptum (83%), Einhaltung der Richtlinie für Mehrdosis-Durchstechflaschen (96%), Verwendung von Mehrdosis-Durchstechflaschen für einen einzelnen Patienten (98%), sichere Entsorgung scharfer Gegenstände (96%).Schlussfolgerung: Die Einhaltung sicherer Injektions- und Infusionspraktiken ist unerlässlich, um Ausbrüche nosokomialer Infektionen zu verhindern.

    Description: The urban population is subjected to multiple exposures of air pollution and heat stress and bear severe impacts on their health and well-being in terms of premature deaths and morbidity. India tops the list of countries with the highest air pollution exposure and hosts some of the most polluted cities in the world. Similarly, Indian cities are highly vulnerable to extreme heat with the frequency of heatwaves expected to increase several-fold in urban areas in India. It is reported that mitigating air pollution could reduce the rural-urban difference of the incoming radiation thus resulting in mitigation of the urban heat island effect. Since the interaction between urban heat and air pollution is dynamic and complex, both these factors should be considered by the urban authorities in designing mitigation strategies. Given the multi-functional nature and cost-effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), they appear to be the most appropriate remedy for environmental issues of urban areas, particularly in developing countries. In addition to improving public health (through the reduction in air pollution and urban heat), NbS also provides a wide range of co-benefits such as reducing energy cost and health costs as well as conservation of biodiversity. This review is an attempt to understand the potentials of NbS in co-mitigating air pollution and urban heat in Indian cities. A framework for the planning and design of NbS in Indian cities is also proposed based on the review that could help city planners and decision-makers in addressing these two issues in an integrated manner.
