Abstract: Numerous genetic loci have been associated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in Europeans(1-3). We now report genome-wide association studies of pulse pressure (PP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). In discovery (N = 74,064) and follow-up studies (N = 48,607), we identified at genome-wide significance (P = 2.7 x 10(-8) to P = 2.3 x 10(-13)) four new PP loci (at 4q12 near CHIC2, 7q22.3 near PIK3CG, 8q24.12 in NOV and 11q24.3 near ADAMTS8), two new MAP loci (3p21.31 in MAP4 and 10q25.3 near ADRB1) and one locus associated with both of these traits (2q24.3 near FIGN) that has also recently been associated with SBP in east Asians. For three of the new PP loci, the estimated effect for SBP was opposite of that for DBP, in contrast to the majority of common SBP- and DBP-associated variants, which show concordant effects on both traits. These findings suggest new genetic pathways underlying blood pressure variation, some of which may differentially influence SBP and DBP

Notes: Abstract Blocking queueing networks are of much interest in performance analysis due to their realistic modeling capability. One important feature of such networks is that they may have deadlocks which can occur if the node capacities are not sufficiently large. A necessary and sufficient condition for the node capacities is presented such that the network is deadlock free. An algorithm is given for buffer allocation in blocking queueing networks such that no deadlocks will occur assuming that the network has the special structure called cacti-graph. Additional algorithm which takes linear time in the number of nodes, is presented to find cycles in cacti networks.

Notes: Raw and partially delignified jute fibers were grafted with acrylonitrile and methyl meth-acrylate monomers, using the redox system of initiation with ceric ammonium sulfate. Grafting was also carried out in a mixed monomer system with acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate monomers in different proportions. The optimum grafting condition depends on the duration of grafting treatment and proportion of grafting monomers. The monomers entered the fiber matrix with high add-on and, at still higher graft add-ons, the ultimate fibers suffered disintegration. The surfaces were increasingly covered with grafted materials and longitudinal cracks developed on the fiber surface with higher add-on. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinal anthropological age changes in a sample of coastal fishermen in West Bengal are discussed. The results show that some traits follow the trends observed in ageing of Western populations, for instance nasal length and breadth continue to increase throughout life in both sexes. Stature follows also the trend generally observed: a decrease occurs indeed from 35 years of age in both sexes, the decline is becoming higher with increasing age. The typical ecological conditions of our population influence the rate of change in other traits, such as weight and biacromial diameter. Weight is known to be influenced by the nutritional status and the way of life. It explains that in our study of males an early increase of weight and biacromial diameter is observed first and a decrease afterwards. In females, however, a decrease is observed already from 35 years of age. This kind of analysis was only possible with the help of longitudinal data and in a well defined population: only longitudinal data is free from the effect of secular changes and of selective death.

Notes: Abstract The results of treatment of meiotic cells of Lilium longiflorum by cycloheximide at the time of chiasma initiation and formation suggest that in the sequential phases of nuclear development, complete chiasma suppression resulting in achiasmate cells is attained prior to a quantitative reduction of chiasma frequency. Reduction of chiasma frequency and complete suppression are believed to be based on two different mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract Post pachytene stages of meiotic prophase in males of Ascaris suum have been analyzed with the electron microscope. No synaptonemal-like polycomplexes (PCs) have been observed in the nucleoplasm or cytoplasm during the period from pachytene to diakinesis. From Serially sectioned diplotene nuclei it was found that the bivalents are located near the periphery of the nuclei, the central part of the nuclei being vacant. Each nucleus contains one nucleolus. Up to 1 μm long stretches of unpaired lateral elements (LEs) are found in some of the diplotene bivalents. These LEs are morphologically similar to unpaired LEs in early zygotene nuclei. Partial 3-dimensional reconstruction of two nuclei shows that the bivalents contain some small stretches of synaptonemal complex (SC) up to 1.9 μm long. Some bivalents at diakinesis show remnants of SCs. At this stage chromosomes are fibrous, condensed, attached to the nuclear envelope and mostly with a rounded profile in cross section. The synchronous development of the spermatocytes and small bivalents at diplotene in A. suum make this system a good object for the study of localization of SC remnants.

Notes: Abstract An ultrastructural analysis of three yeast rad 6-1/rad 6-1 diploids on sporulation medium for 0, 6, 10, and 24 h shows that arrest occurs at meiotic prophase. Two strains, CL 139 and PU 6, fail to complete chromosome synapsis based on the continued presence of single chromosomal cores in arrested nuclei. A clone derived from CL 139, however, showed complete pairing as evident from the presence of 17 synaptonemal complexes. All three strains underwent spindle pole body duplication but the poles failed to form a proper metaphase I spindle. A revertant Rad 6+ isolated from CL 139 showed normal chromosome behaviour and normal kinetic functions. It is concluded that the absence of meiotic recombination in some Rad 6− strains may result from asynapsis, but that in other strains (e.g., CL 139s) recombination fails in spite of complete synapsis. In all cases the lack of sporulation is adequately explained by failure of the kinetic apparatus to form a metaphase I spindle.

Notes: Abstract  The objectives of this study were to estimate the outcrossing rate and to explain genetic consequences of the development of seed in the endocarp in a natural population of neem in Bangladesh. Cotyledons of germinated open-pollinated seeds of individual trees were analyzed by starch-gel electrophoresis to examine allozymes. Three loci with clear Mendelian segregation were used to estimate outcrossing rate. A multilocus mixed mating model was used to evaluate the mating system. The population exhibited high outcrossing rates both for multilocus (tm=0.90±0.024) and mean single-locus (ts=0.92±0.020) estimates. The difference between these two parameters (tm–ts=0±SE 0.038) was insignificant, indicating that there was no ’biparental inbreeding’ in the population. The degree of variance of the estimates of multilocus outcrossing rates decreased when two or more loci were included. In order to elucidate the significance of polycarpy a total of 471 seeds were counted out of 440 endocarps. This mechanism appears to be a possible way of avoiding inbreeding. The results indicated that the studied neem population was predominantly allogamous.
