    Notes: Abstract The effect of prostaglandins (PG) in patients with fulminant and subfulminant viral hepatitis was studied. Seventeen patients presented with FHF secondary to hepatitis A (N=3), hepatitis B (N=6) and non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis (N=8). Fourteen of the 17 patients had stage III or IV hepatic encephalopathy (HE). At presentation, the mean AST was 1844±1246 units/liter, bilirubin 232±135 μmol/liter, PT34±18 and PTT 73±26 sec, and coagulation factors V and VII were 8±4 and 9±51%, respectively. Twelve of 17 patients responded to PGE1 rapidly, with a decrease in AST from 1540±833 to 188±324 units/liter, a decrease in prothrombin time from 27±7 sec to 12±1 sec, PTT from 61±10 sec to 31±2 sec, and an increase in factor V from 9±4% to 69±18% and factor VII from 11±5% to 71±20%. Five responders with NANB hepatitis relapsed upon discontinuation of therapy, with recurrence of HE and increases in AST and PT but improvement was observed upon retreatment. After four weeks of intravenous therapy, oral PGE2 was substituted. Two patients have recovered completely and remain in remission six and 12 months following cessation of therapy. Two additional patients continue in remission after two and six months of PGE2. No relapses have been seen in patients with hepatitis A virus (HAV) or hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Liver biopsies in the 12 surviving patients have returned to normal. These results suggest efficacy of PGE for FHF. Further investigation is warranted.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the expression of procoagulant activity by the circulating mononuclear cells of four patients with Whipple's disease. There was a spontaneous expression of procoagulant activity in two patients with active untreated Whipple's disease. This activity was shown to originate in the monocyte fraction of the mononuclear cells and was demonstrated to cleave prothrombin directly. This prothrombinase activity was not Factor Xa, because it was not neutralized by anti-Factor X serum and was not inhibited by an established panel of Factor Xa inhibitors. The prothrombinase activity was not expressed by the monocytes of these patients following 8 weeks of antibiotic therapy, by which time the patients' symptoms resolved, and was not found in two patients previously treated for Whipple's disease who were in clinical remission or in normal subjects. Serial studies in one patient with active disease showed that monocytes failed to express increased prothrombinase within 2 weeks of antibiotic therapy. A second procoagulant activity was produced in response to endotoxin (LPS) by cells from controls and patients with Whipple's disease and was identified as thromboplastin. These observations suggest that circulating monocytes of patients with active Whipple's disease are endogenously stimulated to express prothrombinase activity, which may contribute, at least in part, to the pathophysiology of this condition.

    Notes: Abstract Pioneer VI was launched into a circumsolar orbit on December 16, 1965, and was occulted by the sun in the latter half of November, 1968. During the occultation period, the 2292-MHz S-band telemetry carrier underwent Faraday rotation due to the interaction of this signal with the plasma and magnetic field in the solar corona. The NASA/JPL 210-ft diameter antenna of the Deep Space Network near Barstow, California, was used for the measurement. The antenna feed was modified for automatic polarization tracking for this experiment. The measurement results are interpreted with a theoretical model of the solar corona. This model consists of a modified Allen-Baumbach electron density and a coronal magnetic field calculated both from Mount Wilson magnetograph observations using a source surface model and field extrapolations from the Explorer 33 satellite magnetometer. The observations and the calculated rotation show general agreement with respect to magnitude, sense, and timing, suggesting the source-surface model and field extrapolations from 1 AU are a valid technique to obtain the magnetic field in the corona from 4 to 12 solar radii. Variations present can easily be ascribed to density enhancements known to be present in the corona. Longitudinal variations of the density in the corona cannot be obtained from coronagraph observations, and thus a purely radial variation was assumed. An improved fit to the Faraday rotation data is obtained with an equatorial electron density $$N = 10^8 \left( {\frac{{6000}}{{R^{10} }} + \frac{{0.002}}{{R^2 }}} \right)...{\text{ cm}}^{{\text{ - 3}}} {\text{ (4 〈 }}R 〈 12){\text{ }}...$$ where R is in solar radii.     Notes: Abstract Coronal Faraday rotation of the linearly polarized carrier signals of the HELIOS spacecraft was recorded during the regularly occurring solar occultations over almost a complete solar cycle from 1975 to 1984. These measurements are used to determine the average strength and radial variation of the coronal magnetic field at solar minimum at solar distances from 3–10 solar radii, i.e., the range over which the complex fields at the coronal base are transformed into the interplanetary spiral. The mean coronal magnetic field in 1975–1976 was found to decrease with radial distance according to r −α, where α = 2.7 ± 0.2. The mean field magnitude was 1.0 ± 0.5 × 10 −5 tesla at a nominal solar distance of 5 solar radii. Possibly higher magnetic field strengths were indicated at solar maximum, but a lack of data prevented a statistical determination of the mean coronal field during this epoch.

    Notes: Carbon-13 spin-lattice relaxation times and chemical shifts are reported for a number of cyclic alcohols and the corresponding methyl ethers. The overall rotation of the alcohols was found to be considerably more anisotropic than that of the methyl ethers. Anisotropic motion becomes less pronounced in both series as ring size increases.

    Notes: Investigation of the photochromic system TPID/CHCl3 (TPID = triphenylimidazolyl dimer) in a CSTR provided the first example of isothermal photochemical bistability. The reaction mechanism was established and the relevant kinetic and spectroscopic parameters were estimated experimentally. In order to predict the quantitative dynamic behavior of the TPID/CHCl3 system these parameters were refined numerically using batch reactor data.The adjusted model simulates very accurately bistability either as a function of residence time τ, or as a function of incident photon flux I0.

    Notes: Abstract The planned radio science investigations during the Voyager missions to the outer planets involve: (1) the use of the radio links to and from the spacecraft for occultation measurements of planetary and satellite atmospheres and ionospheres, the rings of Saturn, the solar corona, and the general-relativistic time delay for radiowave propagation through the Sun's gravity field; (2) radio link measurements of true or apparent spacecraft motion caused by the gravity fields of the planets, the masses of their larger satellites, and characteristics of the interplanetary medium; and (3) related measurements which could provide results in other areas, including the possible detection of long-wavelength gravitational radiation propagating through the Solar System. The measurements will be used to study: atmospheric and ionospheric structure, constituents, and dynamics; the sizes, radial distribution, total mass, and other characteristics of the particles in the rings of Saturn; interior models for the major planets and the mean density and bulk composition of a number of their satellites; the plasma density and dynamics of the solar corona and interplanetary medium; and certain fundamental questions involving gravitation and relativity. The instrumentation for these experiments is the same ground-based and spacecraft radio systems as will be used for tracking and communicating with the Voyager spacecraft, although several important features of these systems have been provided primarily for the radio science investigations.

    Notes: Summary In view of a previous report suggesting an increased metabolism of the beta-blocking agent pindolol with decreasing renal function in man, the relationship between renal function and the elimination kinetics of pindolol has been re-examined. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between the renal clearances of pindolol and creatinine but there is no correlation between the non-renal clearance of pindolol and the renal clearance of creatinine. Thus, there is no evidence of an increased metabolism (non-renal clearance) of pindolol with decreasing renal function.
