    Notes: Abstract. We describe the unusual magnetic resonance (MR) findings of a case of Wilson's disease (WD) in an asymptomatic 2-year-old girl. Preenhanced computed tomography revealed multiple hyperdense areas in the liver. These lesions were hyperintense on T1-weighted and hypointense on T2-weighted MR images, results that might be ascribed to the paramagnetism of copper deposited in liver at a relatively early stage of the disease before severe liver cirrhosis had evolved.

    Notes: A method is proposed according to which critical current density Jc at various temperatures T and dc fields B is estimated on (Tl0.5Pb0.5)(Ba0.2Sr0.8)2Ca2Cu3Oy based upon the flux diffusion barrier heights U(J,B,T) determined by means of ac susceptibility measurement at different ac field amplitudes, frequencies, T, and B. Jc is also estimated by the dc hysteresis measurement and compared with the former. The high Jc(B,T) and Tc show that this Tl-based superconductor is one of the more promising high-Tc materials from a practical standpoint. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We report an unusual case of mesenteric cystic lymphangioma presenting as a large multilocular mass with a well-enhanced solid component and a central cleft, which were were pathologically correlated to the prominent stromal myxoid degeneration interspersed with abundant capillaries and the central fibrosis, respectively. The findings of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are illustrated. Recognition of the multilocular configuration of the enhanced stroma may help to make the correct preoperative diagnosis.

    Notes: We have determined the complete nucleotide sequence of a 7622 base pair fragment of DNA from Vibrio fischeri strain ATCC7744 that contains all the information required to confer plasmid-borne, regulated bioluminescence upon strains of Escherichia coli. The lux regulon from V. fischeri consists of two divergently transcribed operons, L (left) and R (right), and at least seven genes, luxR (L operon) and luxICDABE (R operon) and the intervening control region. The luxA and luxB genes encode respectively the α and β subunits of luciferase. The gene order luxCDABE seen in V. fischeri is the same as for V. harveyi. We have determined the sequence of the luxAB and flanking regions from Photobacterium leiognathi and have found upstream sequences homologous with luxC from the Vibrio species, but between luxB and luxE, there is an open reading frame encoding a protein of 227 amino acids (26,229 molecular weight) that is not found in this location in the Vibrio species. The amino terminal amino acid sequence of the encoded protein is nearly identical to that determined by O'Kane and Lee (University of Georgia) for the non-fluorescent flavoprotein from a closely related Photobacterium species (Dr Dennis O'Kane, personal communication). We have therefore designated this gene luxN.There is a 20-base inverted repeat ACCTGTAGGA×TCGTACAGGT, centred between bases 927 and 928 in the region between the two operons of V. fischeri. This region appears to fulfil two functions: it is critical for the LuxR protein to exert its effect and it is a consensus binding site for the E. coli LexA protein, a negative regulatory protein involved with the SOS response. There are sequences within the luxR coding region that appear to function in a cis-acting fashion to repress transcription from both the leftward and rightward promoters in the absence of the respective transcriptional activator proteins, thereby resulting in low basal levels of transcription. It now appears clear that there are multiple levels of control on the lux system allowing for a modulation of the intensity of bioluminescence of over four orders of magnitude.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On a étudié par les procédés thermoanalytiques les propriétés thermomécaniques et la cinétique de la dégradation de la résine thermoplastique Staybelite et de son dérivé éthérifié Staybelite Ester 10. L'acquisition des données s'est effectuée en couplant la thermobalance à un miniordinateur. A l'aide d'une méthode différentielle, on a pu attribuer d'une manière satisfaisante la cinétique de dégradation de chacune des deux résines thermoplastiques à un processus associé du premier ordre. Les résultats indiquent que la résine éthérifiée possède une durée de vie supérieure à celle du matériau original en ce qui concerne le cyclage thermique entre la température ambiante et 60°. Cette observation est en accord avec le résultat selon lequel la résine éthérifiée résiste plus longtemps lors de l'enregistrement holographique que la résine Staybelite.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die thermischen mechanischen Eigenschaften und die Zersetzungskinetik des Harzes Staybelite, eines thermoplastischen Materials und seines Esterderivats Staybelite Ester 10 wurden unter Verwendung thermoanalytischer Methoden geprüft. Der bei den Zersetzungsuntersuchungen eingesetzte thermogravimetrische Analysator wurde zwecks Datensammlung mit einem Minikomputer gekoppelt. Unter Anwendung einer Differential-methode konnte die Zersetzungskinetik jedes der beiden thermoplastischen Materialien befriedigend einem assoziierten Vorgang erster Ordnung zugeordnet werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen eine verbesserte Beständigkeit des veresterten Harzes gegenüber dem Originalmaterial hinsichtlich der thermischen Zyklisierung zwischen Zimmertemperatur und 60°. Diese Beobachtung stimmt mit dem Befund überein, nach welchem das veresterte Harz im Einsatz bei holographischen Aufzeichnungen hitzebeständiger war als das Harz Staybelite.
    Notes: Abstract The thermal mechanical properties and degradation kinetics of Staybelite Resin, a thermoplastic, and its ester derivative Staybelite Ester 10 have been investigated using thermoanalytic methods. The thermogravimetric analyzer applied in the degradation studies has been interfaced with a minicomputer for data acquisition. The degradation kinetics of each thermosplastic have been satisfactorily attributed to an associated first-order process using a differential method. The results indicate that the esterified resin has an improved durability over the original material with regard to thermal cycling between ambient temperature and 60°. This observation is consistent with the finding that the esterified resin was thermally more durable than Staybelite Resin for holographic recording use.

    Notes: Abstract The composition of W/O microemulsions during slow evaporation at room temperature and at 90°C was determined by chemical analysis. One series of microemulsions was stabilized by pentanol combined with sodium dodecyl sulfate, the other one was combined with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. The hydrocarbon was styrene and the evaporation in the microemulsion was compared to that of the corresponding styrene/pentanol solutions. The results showed significant influence on the evaporation by the microemulsion structure; especially for water contents close to the minimum for stability
