    Notes: Abstract. Fabrication of metastable binary solid state film mixtures with continuously variable composition by asymmetric cross-beam PLD is demonstrated. In this technique, the materials are mixed directly in the intersection region of colliding plasmas of individual target materials. This technique can be advantageous for synthesis of solid state quasi-solutions of partially miscible materials, where one can expect interesting mechanic properties and magnetic transformations.

    Notes: Abstract The response of a spherical metallic particle and a void in a metal on an arbitrary external electrical (gradient) field is given analytically within two models: a macroscopic dielectric description in terms of dielectric functions and a linearized hydrodynamic theory which takes into account boundary effects as well as spatial dispersion. From the response functions, the eigenfrequencies of the collective modes and the electron-energy-loss function are obtained. For small radii we found collective modes extending beyond the classical ℓ = ∞ limit of surface-plasmons up to the volume-plasmon. Concerning electron-energy-losses, our results demonstrate that the “blue-shift” on the collective modes which were observed in potassium clusters or calculated for voids in metals are almost of classical origin and stem from spatial dispersion.

    Notes: Abstract Gastro-esophageal reflux (G.E.R.) in children has been implicated in various recurring respiratory diseases. Several techniques including oesophageal pH testing and scintigraphy have been devised to detect and quantify G.E.R. Limitations have been found for each test: short duration with gamma-camera and restricted acceptability of the pH probe by children. A single isotopic probe was designed for a non-invasive screening test of G.E.R. in infants. This device was checked by comparison with oesophageal scintigraphy using a gamma camera. Only 1 discrepancy was detected in 19 reflux episodes. This method, using a relatively inexpensive detector and data acquisition module, seems to be well accepted by children, and may be associated with a pH probe for GER diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) is a specific marker for neuroendocrine tumours, such as phaeochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) and paraganglioma, but it suffers in some cases (especially in MTC) from a lack of sensitivity. Thallium is a well-known marker of cellularity with a great sensitivity and a lack of specificity. In order to determine whether the association of these two markers is able to improve the detection of neuroendocrine lesions, 137 scintigraphic examinations using MIBG and thallium were performed in 101 patients referred for suspicion or follow-up of neuroendocrine tumours. Thallium chloride was first injected (1 MBq/kg), images being acquired about 20 min after injection; 123I-MIBG (4 MBq/kg) was then injected and images acquired 5 and 24 h later. In patients with phaeochromocytoma or neuroblastoma, thallium scintigraphy appeared of little help since no tumoural site was discovered by thallium accumulation alone. In contrast, thallium examination seemed of interest in the detection of paraganglioma and MTC, the association of the two radiopharmaceuticals increasing the number of detected sites.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Leberglykogengehalt 150–200 g schwerer Tumorratten (Walker-Carcinom 256) nahm in Abhängigkeit vom Tumorgewicht, bis zum völligen Glykogenschwund bei Tumorgewichten über 40g, rapide ab. Gleichzeitig verminderte sich mit steigendem Tumorgewicht sukzessiv die Glykogenmobilisation dieser Ratten nach massiver Glucagonstimulation, bis schließlich bei den schwersten Gewichtsklassen statistisch keine Mobilisation mehr nachweisbar war. Bei Tieren mit Tumoren zwischen 30–40 g fand sich eine deutliche Verminderung der spontanen und stimulierten Aktivität der Leberphosphorylase. Das Ausmaß der Stimulierung nach intracardialer Suprarenininjektion war jedoch unverändert, womit eine tumorbedingte Hemmung der Glykogenmobilisation ausgeschlossen scheint. Zur Erklärung der erst relativ spät im peripheren Venenblut nachweisbaren Tumorhypoglykämie bei frühzeitig nachweisbarem Leberglykogenschwund, wurde eine Steigerung der Gluconeogenese postuliert. Hiermit stimmt der spontane Aktivitätsanstieg der Leber-Tyrosin-Aminotransferase (TAT) tumortragender Ratten auf die Maximalwerte stimulierter Normaltiere überein, desgleichen der mehr als doppelt so hohe Anstieg der TAT-Aktivität nach 6-Methyl-Prednisolon-Injektion bei tumortragenden Tieren im Vergleich zu den Kontrollen. Dieses Verhalten konnte für 2 weitere, hormonell regulierte gluconeogenetische Indicatorenenzyme der Leber, die Alanin-Aminotransferase (GPT) und die Fructose 1,6-di-(P)-ase nicht gefunden werden. Beide Enzyme zeigten erst nach massiver Stimulation mit 6-Methyl-Prednisolon oder Triamcinolon über 2–3 Tage Aktivitätsanstiege. Die GPT war um das ca. 3,5 fache, ohne nachweisbaren Unterschied zwischen Tumortieren und Kontrollen, erhöht. Bei der Fructose 1,6-di-(P)-ase kam es, in Übereinstimmung mit früheren Ergebnissen, lediglich bei den Kontrollen zu einem Aktivitätsanstieg um etwa 25% nach massiver Triamcinolonstimulation. Tumortiere zeigten weder spontan noch nach Stimulation eine statistisch nachweisbare Abweichung von den Werten der unbehandelten Kontroll-gruppe.
    Notes: Summary 150–200 g heavy, Walker-carcinoma bearing, male Sprague-Dawley-rats showed rapid, tumour weight dependent, loss of liver glycogen until complete depletion in tumour groups heavier than 40g/animal. Simultaneously the glycogen mobilization after massive glucagon stimulation, was successivly diminished and finally abolished in different groups with increasing tumor weight. Concomitantly the spontaneous and stimulated activity of liver phosphorylase a was found markedly reduced in advanced tumour cachexia, the extent of stimulation of liver phosphorylase a activity by intracardial injections of epinephrine not being altered. Tumour induced inhibition of glycogen mobilization thus appears to have been excluded. To account for the relative late pronounced hypoglycemia in peripherial rat blood in face of the early loss of liver glycogen, accelerated gluconeogenesis has been postulated. In accord with this a spontaneous rise in liver tyrosine amino transferase was found in tumour bearing rats along with a doubled maximal stimulation value after medrol injection as compared to control groups. This behaviour could not be shown for liver alanine aminotransferase and liver fructose 1,6-diphosphatase. The former showed no differences between control and tumour groups neither of spontaneous nor of stimulated activity. The latter showed only a very reluctant rise after massive stimulation by triamcinolone for 3 days in the control groups, the tumour bearing groups showing no deviation from spontaneous control values.
