Abstract: Sulfoglycolipids are present on the surface of a variety of cells. The sulfatide SM4s is increased in lung, renal, and colon cancer and is associated with an adverse prognosis, possibly due to a low immunoreactivity of the tumor. As macrophages significantly contribute to the inflammatory infiltrate in malignancies, we postulated that SM4s may modulate macrophage function. We have investigated the effect of SM4s on the uptake of apoptotic tumor cells, macrophage cytokine profile, and receptor expression. Using flow cytometry and microscopic analyses, we found that coating apoptotic murine carcinoma cells from the colon and kidney with SM4s promoted their phagocytosis by murine macrophages up to Mold ex vivo and in vivo. This increased capacity was specifically inhibited by preincubation of macrophages with oxidized or acetylated low density lipoprotein and maleylated albumin, indicating involvement of scavenger receptors in this interaction. The uptake of SM4s-coated apoptotic cells significantly enhanced macrophage production of TGF-beta 1, expression of P-selectin, and secretion of IL-6. These data suggest that SM4s within tumors may promote apoptotic cell removal and alter the phenotype of tumor-associated macrophages

Notes: Abstract Saline colonic lavage in 74 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis was performed utilizing a commercially available dental irrigating unit through a polyethylene catheter in the biopsy channel of a colonoscope or through a sigmoidoscope via a lavage-aspirating double-lumen probe. Six patients were found with colonic carcinoma. Two diagnoses of malignancy were established by cytologic smears and cell block alone. Two patients had positive mucosal biopsies and cell block. One patient with a hepatic flexure carcinoma and a second patient with a malignancy proximal to a left colon stricture were missed by these techniques. Considering the established proclivity for carcinoma in these patients, it is felt that segmental lavage in areas of stricture, grossly distorted mucosa, or endoscopically inaccessible areas represents a valuable adjunct in the diagnosis of carcinoma in chronic ulcerative colitis.

Notes: A two-dimensional flow governed by the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with a steady spatially periodic forcing (known as the Kolmogorov flow) is numerically simulated. The behavior of the flow and its transition states as the Reynolds number Re varies is investigated in detail, as well as a number of the flow features. A sequence of bifurcations is shown to take place in the flow as Re varied. Two main regimes of the flow have been observed: small and large scale structure regimes corresponding to different ranges of Re. Each of the regimes includes a number of periodic, chaotic, and relaminarization windows. In addition, each range contains a chaotic window with nonunique chaotic attractors. Spatially disordered, but temporally steady states have been discovered in the large scale structure regime. Features of the diverse cases are displayed in terms of the temporal power spectrum, Poincaré sections and, where possible, Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension.
