Notes: Abstract Immunohistochemical studies were carried out on calcitonin-, somatostatin- and serotonin-reactive cells in newborn pigs and pigs at 3 weeks and 7 months old. The aim of these studies was to examine if the expression of various bioactive substances by parafollicular cells in the pig thyroid varied during development. The volume density of the follicular epithelium was nearly the same in newborn and 3-week-old piglets and significantly lower in 7-month-old animals. The volume density of calciton-in-positive cells, expressed as a percentage of the follicular epithelium density, was similar in young animals, being 12.10% and 13.03% in newborn and 3-week-old piglets, respectively. A small but significant increase to 14.40% was seen in 7-month-old pigs. Somatostatin-positive cells formed a much smaller population at all time points, but these also showed a significant increase with age (0.13%, 0.17% and 0.52% of follicular epithelium density in newborn, 3-week- and 7-month-old pigs, respectively). However the changes in the volume density of somatostatin-positive cells correlated inversely with thyroid activity, the density being highest when the activation index was lowest, suggesting that thyroid activity may be regulated by an increase in the synthesis of this inhibitory peptide. Serotonin-positive cells were extremely rare at all time points and their volume density was not calculated.

Notes: Abstract. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a rate-limiting enzyme in the renin angiotensin system, the enzyme is involved in the vascular remodelling and atherosclerosis. Its significance in pathogenesis of ischemic cerebrovascular insults (CVI) is not known. We analysed 124 Slovenian patients with CVI and compared them with 161 healthy controls for I/D polymorphism. Under a recessive model (χ2 = 1.76, p= 0.1, OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 0.85 – 2.34) we found no significant difference in I/D genotypes between patients with CVI and controls. This study shows that in a group of Slovenian CVI patients the DD genotype is not an important risk factor for the development of stroke.

Notes: Abstract The subchronic effects of cyanobacterial lyophilizate (CL) containing microcystins on liver were investigated in female New Zealand rabbits. Sterilised CL containing microcystins was injected i.p. Liver toxicity was assessed by histological examination of liver samples. Non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of liver was also performed in order to assess changes in the homogeneity of liver tissue. Subchronical intoxication with microcystins caused morphological changes of liver tissue that were also detected by use of MRI. Histological analysis showed that changes seen on MRI represent liver injury characterised with fatty infiltration and periportal fibrosis. This demonstrates that subchronic exposure to microcystins can lead to liver degeneration, which can easily be detected in vivo by use of MRI.

Notes: Abstract The effects of the application of commercial low chlorinated PCB Pyralene-3000 on rat lung development during late gestation were studied. In the developing lungs (17.5 to 21.5 days) the volume density (Vv) of a particular compartment and length density of potential air spaces (Lv) were determined. Significant difference (p〈0.01) in epithelium to mesenchyme ratio (Epi/Mes) occurred between the control and treated groups on day 20.5 due to an increased volume proportion of mesenchyme (Vvmes) in the treated group suggesting a small delay in maturation. Decreased volume proportion of potential airspaces (Vvair) was observed on days 18.5 and 20.5. However, no differences were found on day 21.5 in any variables studied.

Notes: Summary A patient is described who 32 years after thyroidectomy developed a chronic progressive syndrome due to hypoparathyroidism, with multiple extrapyramidal signs (faciobuccolingual dyskinesias, choreiform and athetotic movements of upper extremities, tremor of hands, cogwheel phenomenon), cerebellar manifestations (dysarthria, dysgraphia, mild gait ataxia), and pyramidal signs as well as an organic psychosis and epilepsy. A CT scan showed calcification of the basal ganglia. Therapy for hypoparathyroidism produced partial regression of the disorder. To explain the physiopathologic mechanism of the syndrome, Selye et al. advanced an attractive hypothesis of calciphylaxis, which assumes that a sensitizer and a challenger together induce development of calcification. In the case reported calcification involved the periventricular region and was not limited to the basal ganglia. It is suggested that either a sensitizer or a challenger may enter the periventricular tissue via the ependyma.

Notes: We studied visually evoked cerebral blood flow responses (VEFR) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different visual contrasts and analysed the relationship between them. The records were made from 35 healthy volunteers aged 38.6 ± 10.1 years. The stimulus was a black-and-white checkerboard with visual contrasts (VC) of 1%, 10% and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler, and the VEP were recorded from the occipital leads. We found the relationship between visual contrast and VEFR (r = 0.79, P 〈 0.01) as well as between visual contrast and VEP (r = 0.71, P 〈 0.01). We also found moderate association between the VEP and the VEFR (r = 0.69, P 〈 0.01). The analysis of the regression slopes between two different age subgroups (P 〈 0.01) did not show a significant difference (P = 0.020). We concluded that a simultaneous recording of VEFR and VEP to visual contrasts could allow an assessment of neurovascular coupling in humans.

Notes: Objective:  Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a new component of the surgical treatment of breast cancer that accurately predicts axillary status. In this study the authors evaluated the accuracy of intraoperative imprint cytology (IC) in comparison with definitive histologic evaluation of SLN in breast cancer patients. Methods:  A total 413 women with breast carcinoma and clinically negative axillary nodes underwent breast surgery and SLN biopsy. Mapping of SLN involved injection of 99mTechnecium labelled human albumin nanocolloid particles and Patent Blue dye. At the Department of Pathology, SLNs were bisected along its major axis. Both halves were imprinted 2–4 times on the slides and immediate staining with Hemacolor (Merck Germany) was performed for intraoperative examination. Imprint node negative women underwent no further surgery, while node positive women proceeded to full axillary clearance. Histological analysis of the SLN involved serial sectioning of the whole node with H&E and immunostaining for cytokeratin. Results:  Definitive histology revealed metastases (pN+) in 159/413 patients (38.5%): 69 (16.7%) macro metastases, 57 (13.8%) micro metastases, and 33 (8%) women with only isolated IHC positive cells or positive cell groups smaller than 0.2 mm (pNO sn+). The other 254 women had negative SLN biopsy. Imprint cytology detected 54/69 macro metastases, and 4/57 micro metastases. In the group with negative SLN (254), 2 cases were ‘‘false positives’’.Conclusions:  Imprint of SLN biopsy can identify a negative axilla with high accuracy (specificity 99.2%). Overall sensitivity is only 36.5%, but macrometastases are detected in 77% which is important for performing ALDN in one session with operation of primary tumour.
