    Abstract: This book reviews the convoluted history of orthogenesis with an emphasis of non-English sources, untangles relationships between various concepts of directed evolution and argues whether orthogenesis has something to offer modern biology. Darwinism claims that evolution occurs by selection from an extensive random variability. An alternative viewpoint́€”that the material for variability is limited and organisms are predisposed to vary in certain directions€”ís the essence of evolutionary concepts that can be grouped together under the name of orthogenesis. Dating back to Lamarck, orthogenesis has existed in many guises. Branded as mystical and discarded as unscientific, it keeps re-emerging in evolutionary discussions

    Abstract: The preparation and characterization of various nano-scaled materials and their applications in diverse security and safety- related fields. Readers are provided with a broad overview on the topic as it combines articles addressing the preparation and characterization of different nano-scaled materials (metals, oxides, glasses, polymers, carbon-based, etc.). The contributions derive from the lectures and contributions of the NATO Advanced Study Institute meeting “Nanoscience Advances in CBRN Agents Detection, Information and Energy Security” held in Sozopol, Bulgaria, 29 May - 6 June, 2014. In addition, it presents an interdisciplinary approach, utilizing Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research from different disciplines including; physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science and biology.     Notes: Abstract The Faraday rotation of europium organic glass (based on polymethyl methacrylate) in megagauss fields is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiment was performed using an MK-1 magnetic explosion generator and laser radiation at the wavelength λ=0.85 µm at T=30 K. It is found that the dependence of the rotation angle of the polarization plane on the magnetic field is nonlinear. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data. The contribution of the orbital angular momentum of europium ions to the Faraday effect is revealed. The conclusion is drawn that the previously found anomalies of the Faraday effect for the laser radiation at the wavelength λ=0.63 µm are brought about by the magnetooptical resonance, which is induced by the ultrastrong field.

    Notes: Abstract The scattering of electromagnetic waves by a thin semiconductor plate placed at the center of the transverse cross section of a rectangular waveguide is studied. The relation between the electrodynamic parameters (reflection, absorption, and transmission coefficients) and the characteristics of the semiconductor material (carrier density, carrier mobility, and scattering time) is determined. The idea of the visual library, physical ActiveX (p-ActiveX), for modeling of physical processes is set forth. A description of this library is presented for a wide range of workers engaged in the development of microwave devices with a semiconductor plate as the active element, and a computer file containing this library is provided. (The names ActiveX and Windows are registered trademarks of the Microsoft Corporation.)
