Notes: Abstract A study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the EPR spectrum of the Mn2+ ion in Zn(BF4)2 · 6H2O is reported. The break in the temperature dependence of the b 2 0 parameter at 196 K is evidence of the existence of a phase transition accompanied by a change in the thermal expansion coefficient. It is shown that pressure considerably affects the spectral parameters by reducing the axial parameter b 2 0 and increasing the cubic one, b 4 0 . At 9 kbar, the b 2 0 parameter is temperature independent. A comparison of the pressure dependences of the spectra of Zn(BF4)2 · 6H2O, ZnSiF6 · 6H2O, ZnTiF6 · 6H2O, and MgSiF2 · 6H2O crystals suggests equal hydrogen-bond lengths in these compounds. A ligand hyperfine structure has been detected, which originates from the Zeeman interaction with the proton nuclei surrounding Mn2+ and manifests itself in the formation of satellites at each EPR line, their separation being proportional to the magnetic field. The nonlinear pressure dependence of the linewidth is related to the structural features of the crystal under study.

Description: Several systems, including contractile tail bacteriophages, the type VI secretion system and R-type pyocins, use a multiprotein tubular apparatus to attach to and penetrate host cell membranes. This macromolecular machine resembles a stretched, coiled spring (or sheath) wound around a rigid tube with a spike-shaped protein at its tip. A baseplate structure, which is arguably the most complex part of this assembly, relays the contraction signal to the sheath. Here we present the atomic structure of the approximately 6-megadalton bacteriophage T4 baseplate in its pre- and post-host attachment states and explain the events that lead to sheath contraction in atomic detail. We establish the identity and function of a minimal set of components that is conserved in all contractile injection systems and show that the triggering mechanism is universally conserved.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Taylor, Nicholas M I -- Prokhorov, Nikolai S -- Guerrero-Ferreira, Ricardo C -- Shneider, Mikhail M -- Browning, Christopher -- Goldie, Kenneth N -- Stahlberg, Henning -- Leiman, Petr G -- England -- Nature. 2016 May 18;533(7603):346-52. doi: 10.1038/nature17971.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), BSP-415, 1015 Lausanne, Switzerland. ; Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology, Research Center of Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, pr. 60-letiya Oktyabrya, 7 build. 2, 117312, Moscow, Russia. ; Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Laboratory of Molecular Bioengineering, 16/10 Miklukho-Maklaya St., 117997 Moscow, Russia. ; Center for Cellular Imaging and NanoAnalytics (C-CINA), Biozentrum, University of Basel, Mattenstrasse 26, 4058 Basel, Switzerland.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27193680" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

    Description: The origin of Galactic cosmic rays is a century-long puzzle. Indirect evidence points to their acceleration by supernova shockwaves, but we know little of their escape from the shock and their evolution through the turbulent medium surrounding massive stars. Gamma rays can probe their spreading through the ambient gas and radiation fields. The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has observed the star-forming region of Cygnus X. The 1- to 100-gigaelectronvolt images reveal a 50-parsec-wide cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays that flood the cavities carved by the stellar winds and ionization fronts from young stellar clusters. It provides an example to study the youth of cosmic rays in a superbubble environment before they merge into the older Galactic population.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ackermann, M -- Ajello, M -- Allafort, A -- Baldini, L -- Ballet, J -- Barbiellini, G -- Bastieri, D -- Belfiore, A -- Bellazzini, R -- Berenji, B -- Blandford, R D -- Bloom, E D -- Bonamente, E -- Borgland, A W -- Bottacini, E -- Brigida, M -- Bruel, P -- Buehler, R -- Buson, S -- Caliandro, G A -- Cameron, R A -- Caraveo, P A -- Casandjian, J M -- Cecchi, C -- Chekhtman, A -- Cheung, C C -- Chiang, J -- Ciprini, S -- Claus, R -- Cohen-Tanugi, J -- de Angelis, A -- de Palma, F -- Dermer, C D -- do Couto E Silva, E -- Drell, P S -- Dumora, D -- Favuzzi, C -- Fegan, S J -- Focke, W B -- Fortin, P -- Fukazawa, Y -- Fusco, P -- Gargano, F -- Germani, S -- Giglietto, N -- Giordano, F -- Giroletti, M -- Glanzman, T -- Godfrey, G -- Grenier, I A -- Guillemot, L -- Guiriec, S -- Hadasch, D -- Hanabata, Y -- Harding, A K -- Hayashida, M -- Hayashi, K -- Hays, E -- Johannesson, G -- Johnson, A S -- Kamae, T -- Katagiri, H -- Kataoka, J -- Kerr, M -- Knodlseder, J -- Kuss, M -- Lande, J -- Latronico, L -- Lee, S-H -- Longo, F -- Loparco, F -- Lott, B -- Lovellette, M N -- Lubrano, P -- Martin, P -- Mazziotta, M N -- McEnery, J E -- Mehault, J -- Michelson, P F -- Mitthumsiri, W -- Mizuno, T -- Monte, C -- Monzani, M E -- Morselli, A -- Moskalenko, I V -- Murgia, S -- Naumann-Godo, M -- Nolan, P L -- Norris, J P -- Nuss, E -- Ohsugi, T -- Okumura, A -- Orlando, E -- Ormes, J F -- Ozaki, M -- Paneque, D -- Parent, D -- Pesce-Rollins, M -- Pierbattista, M -- Piron, F -- Pohl, M -- Prokhorov, D -- Raino, S -- Rando, R -- Razzano, M -- Reposeur, T -- Ritz, S -- Parkinson, P M Saz -- Sgro, C -- Siskind, E J -- Smith, P D -- Spinelli, P -- Strong, A W -- Takahashi, H -- Tanaka, T -- Thayer, J G -- Thayer, J B -- Thompson, D J -- Tibaldo, L -- Torres, D F -- Tosti, G -- Tramacere, A -- Troja, E -- Uchiyama, Y -- Vandenbroucke, J -- Vasileiou, V -- Vianello, G -- Vitale, V -- Waite, A P -- Wang, P -- Winer, B L -- Wood, K S -- Yang, Z -- Zimmer, S -- Bontemps, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Nov 25;334(6059):1103-7. doi: 10.1126/science.1210311.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉W. Description: Stable isotope ratios of H, C, and O are powerful indicators of a wide variety of planetary geophysical processes, and for Mars they reveal the record of loss of its atmosphere and subsequent interactions with its surface such as carbonate formation. We report in situ measurements of the isotopic ratios of D/H and (18)O/(16)O in water and (13)C/(12)C, (18)O/(16)O, (17)O/(16)O, and (13)C(18)O/(12)C(16)O in carbon dioxide, made in the martian atmosphere at Gale Crater from the Curiosity rover using the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)'s tunable laser spectrometer (TLS). Comparison between our measurements in the modern atmosphere and those of martian meteorites such as ALH 84001 implies that the martian reservoirs of CO2 and H2O were largely established ~4 billion years ago, but that atmospheric loss or surface interaction may be still ongoing.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Webster, Chris R -- Mahaffy, Paul R -- Flesch, Gregory J -- Niles, Notes: Abstract Let G be a bounded N-connected domain, the boundary Γ of which consists of closed analytic Jordan curves. We assume that 0εG. For any nonnegative integers n and m, denote by ℳ n,m the class of all meromorphic functions on G that can be represented in the form h=p/qz m , where p belongs to the Smirnov class E ∞(G), q is a polynomial of degree at most n, q≢0. Theorems giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a function belonging to the class ℳ n,m to be an element of best approximation to a continuous function f on Γ in the space L ∞(Γ) by functions in the class ℳ n,m are proved. Some questions concerning orthogonal polynomials and the theory of Hankel operators are also considered.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the nuclear resonance interaction strongly enhances the standing wave pattern formed in a multilayer structure at Bragg reflection. It is surprising that the amplitude of modulations increases with a depth and has a maximum in the middle part of multilayer for the time-dispersive method of investigation. The behavior of standing waves can be used for depth selective measurements.
