    Notes: The linear shrinkages during setting of five commercially available photo-activated composite resins were measured using a developed weight-loaded plate plastometer. Six specimens of thickness ranging from 0·25–2·00 mm were used and the linear shrinkage was measured in three stages: under no-load or load of 200 or 400 g. Two light-irradiation times of 20 and 60 s were chosen for each specimen. All measurements were carried out in an air cabinet maintained at either 23 °C or 37 °C. The measuring time of linear shrinkage was 11 min from the start of light-irradiation. The ratio of apparent linear shrinkage decreased according to the increase in specimen thickness and decreased when load was added during setting. Furthermore, the ratio of linear shrinkage of the specimens increased according to the increase in light-irradiation time and the ambient temperature of the specimens. When the adsorptivity or stickiness of material to a tooth was high, detectable initial time (Ti) of the linear shrinkage became longer and the magnitude of linear shrinkage to the adherent direction decreased.

    Notes: The apparent viscosity of alginate impression paste prepared by three mixing methods (hand-mixing technique (HM), semiautomatic instrument (SM) and automatic mixing instrument (AM)), and the gel strength and surface depression of the respective set materials were measured. The materials used were eight commercially available products mixed at a temperature of 23 ± 0.5 °C and allowed to set. The AM had a high mixing speed, which reduced the working time 4.4–31.5%, compared with HM. This was the result of an increase in paste temperature during mixing. In the case of impression materials mixed with the AM, the gel strength and the surface depression at the gel fracture increased significantly, in accordance with Fisher's protected least significant difference (PLSD) analysis. This phenomenon is caused by a decrease of air bubbles in the set material.

    Notes: The apparent viscosity of 17 commercially available alginate impression materials was examined using a rheometer. Each material was mixed for 15 s at a temperature of 23±0·5 °C, using a specially designed alginate mixing instrument. The water powder ratio was determined according to the manufacturer’s instruction. The mixed alginate paste was immediately transferred to the sample stage of the rheometer or to a commercial perforated metal tray. Over the same time scale adjusted according to the rheometer test, a discrimination test (subjective test) was performed by 16 young dentists (each with more than 4 years experience). The apparent viscosity of all materials rose as a function of time after mixing and most of the material had properties similar to pseudoplastic fluids. The relationship between the results of the subjective test and the experimental values (objective test) with the rheometer was expressed in a quadratic equation. The maximum value of the apparent viscosity derived from this result was 1·52×103 Pa · s.

    Notes: Summary Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene encoding type VII collagen, the major component of anchoring fibrils. The characteristic genetic lesion in dominant DEB (DDEB) is a glycine substitution in the collagenous domain of the protein. In this study, we identified a Chinese family with a four-generation pedigree of DDEB, in whom a novel glycine substitution mutation in COL7A1 was demonstrated. A heterozygous nucleotide G→A transition at position 6208 in exon 74 of COL7A1 was detected, which resulted in a glycine to arginine substitution (G2070R) in the triple-helical domain of type VII collagen. This substitution was not found in 110 unrelated normal alleles. This report emphasizes the predominance of glycine substitution mutations in DDEB and contributes to the expanding database on COL7A1 mutations.
