    Notes: Summary Ridges and grooves composing extensive zonulae occludentes are revealed by the freeze-fracture method on split myelin lamellae in the nerve fibre layer of the retina and in the optic nerve of the rabbit. The junctions are located immediately internal to the outer loop of the myelin sheath and in corresponding areas of deeper myelin layers. They follow a straight or gently undulating course along the axis of the fibres. Only at the paranodal region of nodes of Ranvier do they deviate and assume a transverse course. The strands of these zonulae occludentes probably represent the radial thickenings of the intraperiod line described in thin sections.

    Notes: Summary Replicas of the perineurium of rabbit sciatic nerve fascicles show extensivezonulae occludentes between the flattened cells of each perineurial lamella. The junctions formed by thezonulae occludentes are of the morphologically ‘tight’ type. Therefore, they are likely to represent the anatomical site of the diffusion barrier previously demonstrated by other morphological and physiological methods. Neighbouring perineurial lamellae are connected to one another by numerousmaculae occludentes, some of which lie on the lateral processes of the perineurial cells. Within the meshes of themaculae occludentes and close to them, small gap junctions can be observed.

    Notes: Summary The internal portion of the capsule of the spinal ganglia of rabbit is composed of continuous superimposed layers of flattened cells (perineurium). In replicas, extensive meshworks of strands, presumably forming zonulae occludentes, are found between the perineurial cells of the same layer. Adjacent layers are joined by maculae occludentes located on the lateral processes of the perineurial cells. Occasionally small gap junctions lie within the meshes of the zonulae occludentes.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In der Sklera von Albino-Kaninchen finden sich (a) kollagene Fibrillen, die zu Fasern zusammengeschlossen sind, (b) dazwischen liegende elastische Fasern und (c) Fibroblasten. Der Durchmesser der kollagenen Fibrillen wie der Fasern nimmt von innen nach außen zu. In derselben Richtung sinkt die Zahl der elastischen Fasern und Fibroblasten. Die Cysternen des granulierten endoplasmatischen Retikulums der Fibroblasten, die in der innersten Zone der Sklera liegen, zeigen einen besonderen strukturierten Inhalt. Die Herkunft dieser Struktur wird diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary In the albino rabbit the sclera is composed of (a) collagen fibrils arranged in fibers, (b) interposed elastic fibers and (c) fibroblasts. The diameter of collagen fibrils and fibers increases from the internal toward the external surface of the sclera. In the same direction the number of elastic fibers and fibroblasts decreases. A peculiar structure is found in the rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum of the fibroblasts in the innermost portions of the sclera. The nature of this structure is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Specimens of vitreous humour (monkey eye), Wharton jelly (human umbilical cord) and commercial hyaluronates were immersed in buffered fixative solutions containing either aldehydes and Alcian Blue, or aldehydes and Alcian Blue with MgCl2 as electrolyte. Two MgCl2 concentrations were used, 0.025m and 0.3m. Immersion in both solutions induced formation of precipitates which were postfixed in OsO4, dehydrated and embedded for thin section electron microscopy. The use of the same fixative solution produced morphologically comparable precipitates from all three materials. The precipitates, especially after fixation in the presence of electrolyte, were composed of linear, unbranched filaments, frequently aggregated into bundles. The filaments were considered to be molecules of hyaluronic acid.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 71 Augen mit Morbus Coats wurden mit Lichtkoagulation behandelt. Durch Koagulation der abnormen Gefäße konnte ein Fortschreiten der Erkrankung bei 64 Augen über einen Beobachtungszeitraum von durchschnittlich 2 Jahren und 3 Monaten nach Abschluß der Behandlung vermieden werden. In 51 Augen bildeten sich auch die Lipoidablagerungen zurück. Nur bei 7 Augen war eine Progression des Leidens nicht zu verhindern. Komplikationen der Koagulationsbehandlung wurden nicht beobachtet.
    Notes: Summary 71 eyes with Coats' disease were treated with photocoagulation. By coagulation of the abnormal vessels the disease process could be halted in 64 eyes over a mean observation time of 2 years and 3 months after completion of treatment. In 51 of these eyes the lipoid deposits regressed. In only 7 eyes a progression of the disease could not be prevented. Complications of photocoagulation treatment were not observed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Um die mögliche Rolle von Lactat bei der Entwicklung von Gefäßneubildungen nach retinaler Mangeldurchblutung zu eruieren, wurde der Lactatgehalt in Glaskörper-Netzhaut-Aderhaut-Präparaten von Sauerstoff-behandelten Kätzchen und Streptozoticin-diabetischen Ratten bestimmt. In beiden Experimenten ergab sich zwischen den erkrankten Augen und gesunden Kontrollpräparaten kein signifikanter Unterschied des Lactatgehaltes.
    Notes: Summary In order to gain information on the possible role of lactate in the development of neovascularization following retinal malperfusion, the lactate content in vitreous-retina-choroid specimens of O2-treated kittens and streptozotocin-diabetic rats was determined. In both experiments there was no significant difference of lactate content between the diseased eyes and healthy controls.

    Notes: Summary The reaction of Thiéry (periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate) has been applied for histochemical analysis of the structures composing the halo of the most peripheral human retinal vessels. It is suggested that glycoproteins lie in the ground substance of the halo as well as in the basement membranes of endothelial cells, pericytes, and Müller cells. Glycogen particles were found in endothelial cells, in pericytes and especially in Müller cells.

    Notes: Abstract In human embryos with a gestational age ranging from 6.5 to 13 weeks the development of the choriocapillaris was studied by electron microscopy. A continuous maturation process was observed over the whole period, which was most pronounced between weeks 6.5 and 9.7. During the earlier weeks, the endothelium appeared to be rather thick and contained many cytoplasmic vesicles; it was markedly flattened and less vesiculated than at week 9.7. This process was accompanied by an enlargement in the vascular lumina. Fenestrations directed towards the primitive Bruch's layer were found to be already present at week 7.2 but increased in number from week 9.7 to week 13. In the early weeks, basement membrane structures were present in small, discontinuous tufts of cloudy material adjacent to the endothelium. These structures became continuous at week 9.7 and increased in thickness towards week 13. In the earlier weeks, punctate junctions were seen. Beginning with week 9.7, adultlike tight junctions between the endothelial cells became observable. Pericytes were already present at week 6.5. It is suggested that both pericytes and endothelial cells are derived from the differentiating mesenchymal cells of the surrounding ocular stroma.
