    Notes: Summary Three malachite green dyes, Merck's concentrated for microscopy and bacteriology (old), Merck's malachite green oxalate (oxal), and Difco's malachite green, were used for preparation of 3 batches of Rappaport's medium. These media were tested for growth of 40 Salmonella serotypes and for inhibition of competing organisms. All Rappaport's media behaved similarly and supported excellent growth of 38 serotypes. When Salmonella cultures were diluted in fecal-saline suspensions and inoculated in all Rappaport media the competing organisms in these suspensions were efficiently inhibited. However, the inhibition of competing organisms was less efficient when Rappaport's media were inoculated with preenrichment cultures of 20 samples of minced meat in buffered peptone water. In this respect, Difco's malachite green was clearly inferior to the other two dyes. It is concluded that Merck's malachite green oxalate is as efficient as the old dye of the same brand which is no longer produced, and can replace it in the preparation of Rappaport's medium.

    Notes: Summary Several factors are known to affect birthweight and their effects are variously mediated through gestational duration or through fetal growth conditional on this gestation, in order to quantify independent associations of birthweight conditional and unconditional on gestational age, all 2538 mothers of singleton babies delivered during 1993 in two Maternity Hospitals in Athens were interviewed and their obstetric records abstracted. Birthweight was modelled as outcome variable through multiple regression including 32 potentially predictive factors. The regression model was fitted with and without gestational age as an additional independent variable in order to apportion birthweight associations into those independent of, or mediated through, gestational length. The factors studied were found to be classifiable into the following categories: factors associated with birthweight mostly through increases in gestational duration, either positively (age at menarche, long menstrual cycles, parity 4 or higher), or negatively (single motherhood, maternal age, tobacco smoking); those associated with birthweight mostly through increase of birthweight conditional on gestational duration, either positively (male gender, short menstrual cycles, maternal pre-pregnancy weight, anaemia, oedema) or inversely (employment during pregnancy, stillbirth, primiparity, pregnancy induced hypertension, coffee drinking); and those associated with birthweight through apparently dual effects, either positively (maternal education) or inversely (perceived stress, bleeding during pregnancy). The other studied factors were not demonstrably related to birthweight in this data set. Identification and quantification of these relations is useful for understanding underlying physiological and pathophysiological processes and for increasing specificity in exploring the association of birthweight with adult onset diseases, like coronary heart disease or cancer.

    Notes: Serum levels of immunoglobulins G, A and M were determined by nephelometry in 414 infants and children aged 1 month to 14 years. The children were admitted to “Aghia Sophia” Teaching Hospital for Children for surgical corrections of minor anatomical abnormalities, but they were otherwise healthy. Statistical analysis was performed through multiple regression after logarithmic transformation of the immunoglobulin values. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels increased significantly by 18% per year until the age of 5 years and by 2% per year thereafter. Among children less than 5 years old, IgG levels tended to increase significantly with the number of doses of either DTP or Sabin vaccine. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels increased significantly by 27% until the age of 7 years and by 4% thereafter. Among children less than 7 years old, history of breast feeding was significantly associated with higher levels of IgA. Vaccination with either DTP or Sabin was associated with elevation of IgA levels among younger and, to a lesser extent, older children, but the elevations did not reach statistical significance. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels increased rapidly during the first 12 months of life and very slowly thereafter and they were significantly higher among girls. Among children less than one year old, there was evidence that vaccination with either DTP or Sabin was associated with elevated IgM levels, although the differences were not statistically significant possibly because of small numbers of infants in the study sample. The results of the present study demonstrate the age- and sex-dependent changes of immunoglobulins G, A and M, they indicate that vaccination is associated with higher immunoglobulin levels among younger children, and suggest that breast feeding may increase IgA levels among children less than 7 years old.;

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zur Untersuchung des Langzeiteffekts von Haschischgebrauch auf T-Lymphozyten haben wir den Einbau von14C-Thymidin in Lymphozyten des strömenden Blutes ohne und mit Stimulierung durch Phythämagglutinine (PHA) gemessen. Zugleich wurde das Zahlenverhältnis von E-Rosetten bei zwölf gesunden männlichen chronischen Haschischkonsumenten vor und nach einer Rauchperiode bestimmt sowie mit 15 Kontrollpersonen verglichen. Haschischrauchen ergab keine Schädigung der Lymphozytenrekation auf PHA, wenigstens bei der verwendeten PHA-Konzentration. Es ist nicht ausgeschlossen, daß nach chronischem Haschischrauchen eine leichte Stimulierung eintritt.
    Notes: Abstract To investigate the effect of long term hashish use on T-lymphocytes we have measured the incorporation of14C-thymidine by peripheral blood lymphocytes, unstimulated and stimulated by phytohemagglutinin, as well as the proportion and number of E-rosettes in 12 healthy male chronic users of the drug before and after a smoking session, and in 15 control subjects. The results show that hashish smoking does not impair the response of lymphocytes to PHA, at least at the concentration of PHA used. Furthermore there is a possibility that among chronic users a hashish smoking session may have a slight stimulatory effect.

    Notes: Summary The effect of the immunostimulant C. parvum on the establishment and course of mycoplasma arthritis of mice was investigated. Male Swiss albino mice were injected intra-venously with M. arthritidis culture and intraperitoneally with C. parvum. It was shown that mice immunostimulated with C. parvum were significantly protected against the establishment of arthritis if the mycoplasma was given 9 days after the immunostimulant. However, when the arthritis was established C. parvum had no effect on the course of the arthritis. A close association between mycoplasma arthritidis and synovial cells in proposed as a possible explanation of this observation.

    Notes: Serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) were determined by enzyme immunoassay in 414 Greek infants and children of both sexes, 1 month to 14 years old. The children were admitted to the “Aghia Sophia” Teaching Hospital for Children (Athens, Greece) for surgical corrections of minor anatomic abnormalities, but they were otherwise healthy. Statistical analysis was performed through multiple regression after logarithmic transformation of the immunoglobulin values. IgE levels increased significantly by about 80°, per year up to the age of 5 years, without noticeable impact of age on these levels thereafter. History of allergic disease showed a significant positive association with serum levels of IgE in both younger (less than 5 years) and older children. History of frequent infections was positively associated with IgE levels, although the relation was statistically significant only in the older age group. IgE levels in Greek children appear to be higher than the corresponding levels of children living in northern Europe, but much lower than those of children in Southeast Asia, a fact that may reflect different exposure level during childhood to infections known to influence IgE levels.

    Notes: Abstract The activity of phagocytes from A/J mice was estimated by the carbon clearance test following injection of Mycoplasma arthritidis. Phagocytic activity was significantly depressed 12 h post-infection (P=0.001) and returned to normal values at 24 h. For animals examined 2 and 7 days post-infection, the overall phagocytic activity increased significantly (P〈10−4). Phagocytic activity gradually decreased and returned to that of the control group by the end of the fourth week. The relative weights of liver and spleen were significantly increased from the 2nd day post infection (P=0.0028 and P=0.0014 respectively) and remained increased until the end of the experiment. The early depressive effect on phagocytic activity may be related to superantigen activity with the production of mediators such as macrophage deactivating factor. The later expansion of the macrophage population might bring about the stimulation of autoreactive clones of T and B cells and be responsible for the chronic arthritis that developed in the mycoplasma treated mice.

    Notes: The phagocytic activity of mononuclear phagocytes of A/J mice and Wistar rats was estimated by the carbon clearance test following injection of Mycoplasma arthritidis. In mice, the overall phagocytic activity was significantly increased at the end of the first week (P 〈 0.0001), but the increase was marginal by the third and fourth weeks after injection. A significant increase in the relative weight of liver and spleen was observed even when phagocytic activity had returned to levels similar to those of controls (P 〈 0.001). In rats, the overall phagocytic activity was significantly increased until the fourth week (P 〈 0.00001). There was not, however, an increase in the relative weight of liver and spleen as observed for the mice. The results are discussed in the context of factors contributing to the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for differences in the patterns of arthritis due to mycoplasma observed in mice and rats.
