    Abstract: Background-C-reactive protein (CRP) is a heritable marker of chronic inflammation that is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. We sought to identify genetic variants that are associated with CRP levels. Methods and Results-We performed a genome-wide association analysis of CRP in 66 185 participants from 15 population-based studies. We sought replication for the genome-wide significant and suggestive loci in a replication panel comprising 16 540 individuals from 10 independent studies. We found 18 genome-wide significant loci, and we provided evidence of replication for 8 of them. Our results confirm 7 previously known loci and introduce 11 novel loci that are implicated in pathways related to the metabolic syndrome (APOC1, HNF1A, LEPR, GCKR, HNF4A, and PTPN2) or the immune system (CRP, IL6R, NLRP3, IL1F10, and IRF1) or that reside in regions previously not known to play a role in chronic inflammation (PPP1R3B, SALL1, PABPC4, ASCL1, RORA, and BCL7B). We found a significant interaction of body mass index with LEPR (P 〈 2.9 x 10(-6)). A weighted genetic risk score that was developed to summarize the effect of risk alleles was strongly associated with CRP levels and explained approximate to 5% of the trait variance; however, there was no evidence for these genetic variants explaining the association of CRP with coronary heart disease. Conclusions-We identified 18 loci that were associated with CRP levels. Our study highlights immune response and metabolic regulatory pathways involved in the regulation of chronic inflammation.

    Notes: Abstract Clohiesia lignicola sp. nov. (freshwater ascomycetes) is introduced based on a specimen collected on submerged wood in the Tung Chung River, Hong Kong. Ascomata are clypeate, asci are cylindric-clavate with a relatively massive apical apparatus and ascospores are fusoid-ellipsoidal.Clohiesia lignicola differs fromC. corticola in having wider asci and wider fusoid-ellipsoidal ascospores, and larger ascomata.Clohiesia lignicola is described and illustrated with light micrographs and is also compared with species in the genus,Annulatascus.

    Notes: The representation of plasma impedance of gas laser discharge and spark gap channels by an inductance–capacitance (Lp−Cp) tank circuit has been useful in describing the frequency response of a pulsed superradiant laser charging circuit. The impedance matching of these plasma channels can lead to resonant narrowing of the laser pulsewidth in superradiant nitrogen lasers. Using fluid equations to model the electron and ion plasmas, the impedance of plasma channels is formulated. This derived impedance supports the phenomenological Lp−Cp tank circuit configuration, and provides the means to calculate the inductance and capacitance in terms of the plasma density and discharge dimensions. Conjugating this model with the pulse width narrowing via plasma impedance matching, the electron density at the very moment of lasing in a superradiant gas laser channel can be estimated by using the measured Lp and Cp. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: One-dimensional steady-state transport equations are used to describe the equilibrium state of multiple species cylindrically symmetric arc plasmas. The effects of axial and azimuthal variations are introduced through the boundary conditions at the center. It is shown that the axisymmetric case of m=0 is actually the case of large m being smoothed out by thermal fluctuations where m is the azimuthal mode number. The conservation of mass density flux gives rise to mutual diffusion and a criterion is given to predict which neutral species should concentrate at the center and vice versa. By writing the energy balance equation in the form of action integral, it is clear that the power dissipation is always a minimum, thus proving the Steenbeck's minimum principle. A local thermal equilibrium model is used to obtain the electron density. This model is tested against the experimental results of a helium arc with copper electrodes at atmospheric pressure. The steep positive density gradient of the copper is the consequence of pressure balance with the much higher density helium, and the steepness is directly related to the disparity of the two densities.

    Notes: Background : Long-term effect of YMDD mutations on liver histology in Chinese hepatitis B patients is unknown.Aim : To examine the effect of prolonged lamivudine treatment on liver histology in Chinese patients with and without YMDD mutations.Methods : Liver histology was assessed in 85 patients on long-term lamivudine at baseline and year 1, and at year 3 for 25 patients.Results : Comparing patients with and without YMDD mutations at year 1, the former had higher baseline median necroinflammatory (11 vs. six respectively, P = 0.014) and fibrosis scores (three vs. one respectively, P = 0.001). The proportion of patients with improvement in necroinflammation and worsening of fibrosis was comparable for patients with and without YMDD mutations at year 1 (57.1%, 14.3% vs. 55%, 15% respectively) and year 3 (57.9%, 26.3% vs. 50%, 16.7% respectively). Comparing the histology at year 1 and 3, more patients with YMDD mutations developing after year 1 had worsening of necroinflammation than patients with persistent YMDD wild type (53.8% vs. 25% respectively).Conclusions : Patients who developed YMDD mutations had higher baseline histological scores. With YMDD mutations, the liver histology became less favourable after 3 years than at the first year, although there was still improvement when compared with that at baseline.

    Notes: Abstract The generation of bright solar radio spikes by the beam-driven cyclotron resonance maser mechanism (the resonant interaction of an electron beam with a circularly polarized wave in a background plasma under the action of a guide magnetic field) is studied. Nonlinear effects such as radiation damping and gyrophase bunching on electron energy and momentum are responsible for the enhanced direct energy conversion between the beam and the coherent wave. Factors such as beam energy spread and pitch angle distribution are analyzed. The intense maser radiation is carried at the source by the circularly polarized wave propagating along the magnetic field. Due to the magnetic field curvature, the outgoing maser radiation converts into extraordinary and ordinary modes. The extraordinary mode suffers from plasma absorption at the second harmonic layer, whereas the ordinary mode is likely to get through.

    Notes: Abstract Making use of the fact that, in the solar system, the angular momentum is carried predominantly by the planets while the mass is beared almost entirely by the Sun, an iterative scheme is devised to solve approximately the n-body contributions of the lunar orbit problem. The scheme envisages the Moon-Earth-Sun three-body subsystem as being nested in the grand Earth-Jupiter-Sun system. In the planetocentric representation, the orbital motion of the Sun about the solar system center of mass is transmitted to the third body via the second primary body in both the grand and nested three-body systems.

    Notes: Abstract Practitioners of industrial statistics are generally familiar with the common C p and C pk process capability indices. However, many additional indices have been proposed, and knowledge of these is less widespread. More importantly, information regarding the indices' comparative behavior is lacking. This paper compares the behavior of various indices under shifting process conditions. Both useful and misleading characteristics of the indices are identified. We begin with a short history of process capability measures. Several process capability indices are reviewed. Application areas for capability indices are also summarized. The indices are grouped according to the loss functions which are used in their interpretation. Characteristics of the various indices are discussed. Finally, recommendations are made for selection of indices at differing levels of process performance.
