    Notes: Synopsis Sturgeon gametes differ from those of most fish in that the sperm possess acrosomes that undergo exocytosis and filament formation while the eggs possess numerous micropyles. Acipenser transmontanus eggs are encased by multilayered envelopes that consist of outer adhesive jelly coats and three structured layers interior to the jelly. The glycoprotein jelly layer only becomes adhesive upon exposure to freshwater. The layer interior to the jelly, layer 3, is the other carbohydrate-containing component of the egg envelope. This layer consists of a water-insoluble glycoprotein that, upon freshwater exposure, is hydrolyzed by a trypsinlike protease to yield a water-soluble, lower molecular weight carbohydrate-containing component. This component can be identified in the surrounding medium when unfertilized eggs are incubated in freshwater. This egg water component elicits acrosome reactions only in homologous sperm. The A. transmontanus sperm acrosome reaction is a Ca++ and/or Mg++ dependent event that includes the formation of a 10 μ long fertilization filament. A. transmontanus fertilization can occur at low sperm per egg ratios; however, crossfertilization of A. transmontanus eggs with lake sturgeon, A. fluvescens, sperm results in a very low number of fertilized eggs, even at high sperm per egg ratios. The morphological, physiological, and biochemical phenomenon reviewed in this paper are related to the environment in which they occur. Also, the possible role of the acrosome and the presence of numerous micropyles are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We present a short review of the essential techniques of cooling free atoms by resonant laser radiation. The different contributions to the light forces are explained and their application to the problem of damping the thermal motion of free atoms is described. Due to quantum mechanical fluctuations of the light force there exists a limit temperature for a given atomic transition. Deceleration of atomic beams by the radiation pressure demands techniques to maintain the resonance condition while the Doppler shift of the decelerated atom is rapidly changing. Radiation forces may serve to compress and deflect slow atomic beams as well as to trap cold atoms. The possible use of pulsed laser radiation is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract: The superfluid fraction of an atomic cloud is defined using the cloud's response to a rotation of the external potential, i.e. the moment of inertia. A fully quantum mechanical calculation of this moment is based on the dispersion of Lz instead of quasi-classical averages. In this paper we derive analytical results for the moment of inertia of a small number of non-interacting Bosons using the canonical ensemble. The required symmetrized averages are obtained via a representation of the partition function by permutation cycles. Our results are useful to discriminate purely quantum statistical effects from interaction effects in studies of superfluidity and phase transitions in finite samples.

    Notes: In the marine shrimp Sicyonia ingentis, ova lack cortical vesicles at spawning. Previous ultrastructural studies suggested that two different populations of cortical vesicles (dense vesicles and the ring vesicles) appear within 30 min post-spawning. These vesicles undergo sequential exocytosis (exocytosis of the dense vesicles followed by exocytosis of the ring vesicles) that leads to the formation of a hatching envelope around the ovum (see Pillai and Clark: Tissue & Cell 20:941-52, 1988). In the present study, lectins were used as molecular probes to study the development of cortical vesicles subsequent to spawning and the role of these vesicles in formation and elaboration of the hatching envelope. Isolated envelopes were screened with 11 different lectins to determine what group(s) were specific to the envelope glycoconjugates; Concanavalin A (Con A), Griffonia simplicifolia (GS II), Lens culinaris (LCA), and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) bound to the envelopes. FITC-lectin studies of sectioned ova (fixed at various time points after spawning) utilizing WGA and LCA showed different labelling patterns. Data obtained at the light microscopical level indicated that WGA was specific to the dense vesicles and the outer portion of the envelope, while LCA exhibited specificity for the ring vesicles and the inner portion of the envelope. At the ultrastructural level, gold-LCA labelling was seen associated with the cisternal elements (containing ring-shaped structures), ring vesicles, and the inner layer of the fully formed envelope. These data demonstrated that (1) the ring vesicles are formed by fusion of cisternal elements containing ring-shaped structures; (2) the two species of cortical vesicles are chemically heterogeneous; and (3) the components of each type of vesicle contribute to different integral parts (the outer and inner layers) of the hatching envelope.

    Notes: The midgut epithelium of larval and early postlarval brown shrimp has been studied with light and electron microscopy. Ultrastructurally the features of the midgut do not change during these stages of development. On the basis of electron density, two epithelial cell types can be distinguished, and these are referred to as light and dark cells. The dark cells contain more rough endoplasmic reticulum and more free ribosomes than the light cells. Mitochondria in the dark cells have a matrix which is less electron dense than the mitochondrial matrix of the light cells. Both cell types have a microvillous border with a surface coat. The microvilli lack microfilaments within their core, and a terminal web is not differentiated in the stages examined. Tubular smooth endoplasmic reticulum is abundant in the basal portions of the cells. Electron dense, membrane bound vesicles are consistently seen in association with the Golgi apparatus, apical cell surface, and gut lumen and therefore are believed to be secretory granules. Cells in the anterior portion of the midgut often contain very large lipid droplets in the cytoplasm.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is devoted to the study of a new atomic cavity consisting of a single horizontal concave mirror placed in the earth gravitational field. Gravity, by bending the atomic trajectories, plays the role of a second mirror closing the cavity. We first discuss the stability criterion for this cavity, assuming that the mirror has a parabolic shape. We then derive the quantum mechanical modes of such a configuration, with particular emphasis on the paraxial (i.e., close to vertical) motion. Finally, we discuss the possibility of populating those modes from an initial cold atomic cloud dropped above the mirror.
