    Notes: 1. Fluorescent Ca2+ indicators, such as fura-2/AM and calcium green-1, have become one of the most popular tools for measuring intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i).2. Electrical stimulation triggers a cascade of events in the cardiac muscle, which results in a [Ca2+]i transient and, eventually, contraction. The events that occur in electrically induced cardiac myocytes mimic the normal physiological events in vivo.3. The electrically induced [Ca2+]i transient represents influx of Ca2+ from outside and mobilization of Ca2+ from the intracellular store and is directly related to contraction. Thus, it is more important to determine the electrically induced [Ca2+]i transient than [Ca2+]i. The [Ca2+]i transient can be easily measured with the spectrofluorescence method using fura 2/AM as the Ca2+ indicator in a single ventricular myocyte preparation.4. We made use of the results of studies on carbachol, tetrandrine and cardiotoxin to illustrate the usefulness of the electrically induced [Ca2+]i transient in the study of actions of cardiac drugs.

The modulatory actions of both adenosine A1 and K1-opioid receptor agonists on β-adrenoceptor stimulation in the heart of both spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and nor-motensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were compared.2. In both types of rats, bot. R(-)-N6-(2-phenyliso-propyl)adenosine (R-PIA), an adenosine A1 receptor agonist, and U50 488H, a K1-opioid receptor agonist, inhibited the stimulatory effects of β-adrenoceptor activation on electrically induced [Ca2+]i transients measured by a spectrofluorometric method with fura-2/AM as the calcium indicator. The effects of these two agonists were blocked by their respective antagonists, namely 8-cyclopentyl-l,3-diprolxanthine and norbinaltorphimine.3. The inhibitory actions of both R-PIA and U50488H on β-adrenoceptor augmentation of electrically induce. [Ca2+]i transients in the heart were more significantly reduced in SHR than in WKY rats, suggesting the negative modulatory actions of endogenous substances on 3-adrenoceptors were impaired in SHR, which may contribute to hypertension.

    Notes: The influence of low-temperature buffer layer thickness on the electrical properties of GaN film is investigated, and the surface morphology is also examined by atomic force microscopy. A best surface morphology does not show best electrical properties, which could be attributed to the usual growth mechanism for GaN film on sapphire substrate. The influence of the growth temperature for the final GaN layer is also investigated. When the growth temperature increases to 1100 °C, the mobility is greatly enhanced to 600 cm2/V s with a background carrier density of 3.3×1016/cm3 at room temperature. The emission energy of the near band gap exciton at a low temperature shows a blueshift with increasing growth temperature due to an enhanced thermal stress. The calculation based on a thermal stress model agrees very well with the photoluminescence measurement. This result could partly explain the reason that the previously published values for the near band gap exciton emission energy are scattered. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: The China Levee Project Information Management System (CLPIMS) is an information management platform that was established for levee project management within the seven major river basins in China. The system was developed on the basis of the VS.NET and ArcGIS Server and was combined with the database theory and key techniques of WebGIS, which has the features of real-time display, enquiry, statistics and management of spatial data under browser/server mode. Moreover, additional applications, such as real-time monitoring, safety assessment, early warning and danger forecasting and online analysis, can be further explored through reserved modules. The CLPIMS can serve not only as a scientific, systematic, visual tool for analysis and decision management in levee projects in China but also as a technical platform for flood control practice. Furthermore, the system is capable of unified management and sharing of the levee project information for the seven major river basins in China, and it is important for the improvement of office automation, E-government applications and the level of flood control operations.
