Notes: Docetaxel (Taxotere®), a semisynthetic taxoid, acts as an antimicrotubule agent and is considered to have great potential in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, advanced breast cancer, ovarian cancer and some other tumours. Well-recognized side-effects include dose-limiting neutropenia, fluid retention, myalgia, neuropathy, hypersensitivity reaction, alopecia, mucositis, nail changes and cutaneous reactions such as acral erythema. We describe a unique docetaxel-induced cutaneous reaction presenting as fixed erythematous plaque(s) unrelated to extravasation or previous skin injury; histopathological studies were performed in three of the four cases.

Description: Background/Aim: We performed a retrospective survey on our metastatic renal cell carcinoma (MRCC) patients who had received targeted therapies, and afterwards evaluated the clinical impacts of local interventions on the patient outcomes. Materials and Methods: Between 2006 and 2016, 124 patients with MRCC who had received at least one line of tyrosine kinase inhibitors or mammalian target of rapamycin were included in the study. Seventy-five patients (60.5%) received targeted therapies only, twenty-six patients received complete resection and the remaining 23 received incomplete local interventions for their metastatic lesions. Analysis of the basic characteristics, overall survival and multi-variant regression amongst the three groups was performed. Results: The age, gender distribution, tumor cell type, targeted therapy selection, line of therapies and sites of metastases were not different amongst the three groups. The targeted therapy-only group had a significantly higher percentage of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) poor-risk patients compared with the other two groups (22.7% vs. 3.8% and 0%, p=0.006 respectively). The targeted treatment duration and follow-up duration was significantly shorted in the targeted therapy-only group. Of the twelve variables analyzed, complete resection and MSKCC poor-risk group showed a significant impact on the overall survival rate (HR=0.5, 95%CI=0.25-0.98, p=0.045; HR=2.97, 95%CI=1.05-8.4, p=0.04 respectively). Conclusion: Complete resection of metastatic sites for MRCC patients, combined with targeted therapy, could provide better overall survival rates than targeted therapy alone. Poor MSKCC risk is still correlated to a poor outcome in the current targeted therapy era.

Notes: Summary The effects of four different external Lewis bases on propylene polymerization using the MgCl2-supported TiCl4 catalyst were studied in the context of the variation of the chemical complexes formed between catalyst, catalyst support and internal Lewis base, and the interactions between complexes and external Lewis base, The internal Lewis base used in this study was dioctyl phthalate. With ethyl benzoate as the external donor no change in activity was observed, but the interaction between ethyl benzoate and MgCl2·phthaloyl chloride complex resulted in a decrease of isotacticity. Increasing the bulkiness of the external Lewis base hindered the monomer coordination. It was found that the relative amount of the phthaloyl chloride complex to other complexes played an important role in the formation of active sites.

Notes: Abstract  The study was carried out to test the ability of Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. jugurti, Streptococcus thermophilus and L. delbrueckii ssp bulgaricus to decrease cholesterol in vitro and to grow in the presence of bile salts. Both properties were dependent on the species under study. The cultures were also inoculated into soymilk fortified with dry milk whey powder as single or mixed starters. The physicochemical and sensory evaluations of the fermented products showed that E. faecium plus L. jugurti (ratio 1 : 1) is the best combination, and this mixture also produces a 43% decrease in cholesterol.

Notes: Summary 143 patients with acute hepatitis A observed during a common source outbreak were tested for IgM class antibody to hepatitis A virus (IgM anti-HAV) by commercially available solid phase radioimmunoassays. All patients were IgM anti-HAV positive though six of them were initially negative when tested within three days after the onset of symptoms. The levels of IgM anti-HAV peaked two to four weeks after onset, and declined gradually thereafter. The probability of IgM anti-HAv positivity was 25% at the end of the sixth month, and 3.4% at the end of the ninth month after onset. No significant sex or age difference in the persistence of IgM anti-HAV was observed. It was suggested that the timing of the assay and the level of IgM anti-HAV should be considered in the etiological diagnosis of acute hepatitis.

Notes: Summary Phylogenetic trees were constructed for 62 venom toxins of snakes ofProteroglyphae suborder using matrix method. The resulting tree fromMinimum Spanning Tree-Cluster Analysis technique had the lowest “percent deviation” (8.55). The taxonomic relationship of these toxins agrees very well with zoological opinions. However, the appearance of the tree did not directly provide a plausible evolutionary model for the toxins. A model was derived from nodal ancestral sequence calculations, comparisons between intra-and inter-generical rates of amino acid change, and generally held ideas about protein evolution. According to the model, short neurotoxin is the ancient form of snake venom toxins. The courses of evolution leading to the present intraspecific homologous toxins are explained by gene duplication and allelomorphism.

Notes: Summary The transport of [3H] 1,l 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, [3H] folic acid, and [3H]methotrexate by L1210 cell plasma membrane vesicles exhibited multicompartmental behavior. Two separate vesicular compartments (parallel relationship) of approximately equal volume were revealed during measurements of influx and efflux. Flux in one compartment was rapid, saturable, highly temperature-sensitive, and inhibited by pCMBS. Flux in the other compartment exhibited all of the characteristics of passive diffusion. These results imply that our plasma membrane vesicle preparations consist of a mixture of two functional species. Transport of folate into one of these species occurs by passive diffusion alone, whereas transport into the other kind of vesicle occurs by both passive diffusion and carrier-facilitated transport.
