    Abstract: The purpose of this edited volume is to provide a comprehensive overview on the fundamentals of deep learning, introduce the widely-used learning architectures and algorithms, present its latest theoretical progress, discuss the most popular deep learning platforms and data sets, and describe how many deep learning methodologies have brought great breakthroughs in various applications of text, image, video, speech and audio processing. Deep learning (DL) has been widely considered as the next generation of machine learning methodology. DL attracts much attention and also achieves great success in pattern recognition, computer vision, data mining, and knowledge discovery due to its great capability in learning high-level abstract features from vast amount of data. This new book will not only attempt to provide a general roadmap or guidance to the current deep learning methodologies, but also present the challenges and envision new perspectives which may lead to further breakthroughs in this field. This book will serve as a useful reference for senior (undergraduate or graduate) students in computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, as well as others interested in studying or exploring the potential of exploiting deep learning algorithms.     Notes: Abstract A 5-year-old Japanese girl was affected with acute nephritis. The patient had hypo-complementaemia and an elevation of anti-streptolysin O with positive throat culture of Group A streptococci. Four weeks after onset of the disease, serum complement level returned to normal, but proteinuria increased into the nephrotic range with a deterioration in renal function. Four weeks after onset, light microscopy of a renal biopsy showed diffuse endocapillary proliferation, and immunofluoroscopy revealed predominant IgA deposition in the mesangium. Electron microscopy showed electron dense deposits in the mesangial and subendothelial area, but subepithelial deposits were not found in the glomeruli. Histological diagnosis was IgA nephropathy, while her clinico-serological features were typical of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis Conclusion These results suggest that in some patients, IgA nephropathy may be triggered by streptococcal infection and misdiagnosed as acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis if renal histological examinations are not done.

    Notes: The elastic, piezoelectric, and dielectric constants of 0.67Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.33PbTiO3 domain engineered single crystal were determined experimentally by using ultrasonic and resonance methods. It was confirmed that the single crystal system has large electromechanical coupling coefficient k33 (∼94%) and piezoelectric constant d33 (∼2800 pC/N) if the poling is done along the [001] of pseudocubic directions. A soft shear mode with a velocity of 880 m/s was observed in the [110] direction with displacement in [1¯10]. Using the measured data, the orientation dependence of phase velocities and electromechanical coupling coefficients were calculated. The origin of experimental errors and their influence on measured results are also examined. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Copper/SiCp composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the sintered samples. Cu2O was found to facilitate the physical wetting at the interface through the formation of an amorphous intergranular phase. The reaction between SiC and copper was detected in the samples containing little Cu2O. It led to the degradation of SiC reinforcements and the decrease in hardness of copper/SiCp composites.

    Notes: 75Cu·25SiC (vol%) compacts were prepared using copper-coated SiC particles and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The preliminary thermal performance of the coated particles was determined using simultaneous DSC-TG-MS measurement. Characterization of compacts using XRD and SEM techniques was conducted to investigate the physical and chemical changes during the SPS operation. It was found that CuO decomposed at 850° and 500°C during conventional heating and SPS, respectively. Cu2O facilitated the densification of Cu/SiC composites. The optimized sintering temperature of Cu/SiC composites using SPS was ∼730°C. The compacts showed improved hardness because of the SiC reinforcement.

    Notes: The flow characteristics of a new vertical spinning disk, low-pressure vapor deposition apparatus were studied. The nominal boundary-layer thickness dependence on the reactor pressure, substrate rotation rate, and substrate temperature were examined with the aid of a smoke that was generated from hydrolyzed TiCl4 vapor. The measured nominal boundary layer thickness was found to have a strong dependence on the reactor pressure and the substrate rotation rate, whereas the temperature dependence was not easily resolved by the present method. The experimental data and the theoretical prediction were found to agree within the accuracy of the measurements.

    Notes: Abstract An improved laser fluorimeter and its application for the determination of ultratrace concentrations of uranium are described. The system developed uses a collecting lens-filter system, by which the density of laser radiation on the sample is increased greatly and the interfering stray light can be reduced to a great degree. In addition, both laser and lamp sources are joined together in the instrument. A strong green phosphor from uranium-doped sodium metaphosphate (NaPO3: U) has been found suitable and has been used for the determination of ultratraces of uranium. A detection limit (3σ) of 0.36 pg of uranium (in 30 mg NaH2PO4 per pellet) was obtained. In the case of peak-to-background intensity ratios relative standard deviations (RSD) are 6.4% and the linear dynamic range extends from 1 pg to 103 ng of uranium.

    Notes: Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is an alternative fuel oxygenate that can be produced in the liquid phase by addition of ethanol to isobutene catalyzed by sulfonic acid ion exchange resins. A generalized Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate expression is formulated in terms of the liquid phase activities of the reactants that is quasi-autocatalytic due to ethanol. This microkinetic model is combined with the generalized Maxwell-Stefan equations for a detailed investigation of the influence of multicomponent mass transfer limitations inside the macropores of the heterogeneous catalyst. The model is used for revision of experimental rate data for ETBE synthesis in the literature. The analysis reveals that reverse diffusion of isobutene can occur by strong interaction with ethanol and the catalyst effectiveness factor can exceed unity.
