Notes: Abstract We consider a nonlinear, elliptic, free-boundary problem involving an initially unknown setA that represents, for example, the cross-section of a steady vortex ring or of a confined plasma in equilibrium. The solutions are characterized by a variational principle which allows us to describe their behaviour under a limiting process such that the diameter ofA tends to zero, while the solutions degenerate to the solution of a related linear problem. This limiting solution is the sum of the Green function of the linear operator and of a smooth function satisfying the boundary conditions. Mathematically speaking, this limiting process, that we call “nonlinear desingularization”, is a novel kind of bifurcation phenomenon since the nonlinear effect here involves smoothing the singularity of the associated linear problem.

Notes: Summary Cytogenetic studies of three Fanconi's anemia patients are reported, one of the patients having erythroleukemia, the other two preleukemia. Clonal abnormalities were present in all three cases. Partial chromosomal duplication uncommon in other leukemias was observed. Partial duplication of the long arm of chromosome 3 has been observed in the present case of erythroleukemia examined as well as in a previously reported one.

Notes: Summary We report on 50 couples with reproductive loss who did not have any detectable chromosome abnormality. A history of a previous child with multiple congenital abnormalities may be significant in identifying couples with a structural rearrangement. Only by studying more families can this hypothesis be tested. Studies of abortus tissue reveal a high percentage of chromosome abnormalities but a very low incidence of unbalanced translocations. Cytogenetic studies are indicated in a couple which has a past history of spontaneous abortions and a previous child with multiple congenital anomalies.

Notes: Abstract Antibodies of various immunoglobulin classes to different cow's milk proteins were studied with the fluorescent immunosorbent test in 601 newborns, infants, children and adults (A). The antibody levels, expressed as the geometric mean (gm) of four antibody titres to casein, β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin and bovine serum albumin, showed a clear dependence on age. They were compared with the antibody levels in children with cow's milk protein intolerance (C), other gastrointestinal disorders (B) and coeliac disease (D). The 20 children with cow's milk protein intolerance clearly differed (significance level 2×10-11) from those of the two control groups (A, B) insofar as the criterion adopted was not the titre against a single protein but the gm of the four antibody titres, and insofar as allowance was made for the age of the patients. All patients with cow's milk protein intolerance also showed elevated gm titres of IgE, IgA and IgM antibodies. However, since a number of children in the control groups also showed higher values, particularly with regard to IgE antibodies, the determination of the IgE, IgA and IgM antibodies adds little to the diagnosis and at best provides a further discriminatory aid. Although antibody titres fall immediately after placing the child on a milk-free diet, it is a matter of months before they become negative (titre 〈1∶20). After challenge titres rise again. In a longitudinal study of 25 children with acute gastroenteritis (E) it was shown that the antibody titres remained unchanged during and after the attack. This contradicts the often expressed opinion that the cow's milk antibodies frequently observed in healthy infants are induced as a consequence of gastroenteritis. In contrast to the other groups, all 26 children with proven coeliac disease (D) had antibodies to gliadin, irrespective of whether their gm cow's milk antibody titre was high or low.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß chronischer UV-Lichteinwirkung auf das dermale Bindegewebe der Nacktmaus (Ng/-) wurde licht- und elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht (25 Tiere; Dauer der Bestrahlung 8,5 Monate; tägliche Strahlendosis 40±2 J/cm2). Die induzierten Bindegewebsveränderungen entsprechen weitgehend dem Bild, wie es bei der menschlichen aktinischen Elastose angetroffen wird.
Notes: Summary The effect of long-term ultraviolet irradiation on the connective tissue of the skin was investigated in 25 naked (Ng/-) mice which received a total daily radiant dose of 40±2 J/cm2 for a period of 8.5 months. The produced alterations were very similar to those found in actinic elastosis of humans, as assessed by histologic and electron-microscopic criteria.

Notes: Abstract The interference electron microscopy was applied to investigate the mean inner potential of Bi spheres. With an electric biprism a system of equidistant and parallel interference lines was produced. The Bi spheres were evaporated on carbon foils in the electron microscope. From shift of the interference lines in the image plane the mean inner potential was calculated. The method allows to measure the mean inner potential at different temperatures. The results offer the possibility to measure the mean potential at the surface of an object.

Notes: Abstract Inclusion of specific effects associated with constituent binding in hadronic wave functions is shown to lead to important non-scaling, nonfactorizing 1/Q 2 contributions to cross sections for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, the Drell-Yan process, and other hard scattering reactions. These 1/Q 2 higher-twist terms are predicted to be dominant in well defined kinematic regions such as largex and/or largez. The provide angular distributions typical of longitudinally polarized virtual photons andW's, including sin2 θ terms in meson induced Drell-Yan processes and ine + e −→πX, as well as unusual (1−y) terms in deep-inelastic scattering. Calculations are also presented of the quark structure functions of the pionq π(x, Q 2) and for the quark to pion fragmentation functionD π(z, Q 2). Predictions are made for the azimuthal angle dependence of the cross sections for $$\pi N \to \mu {\text{ }}\bar \mu X$$ andlN→l′πX.

Notes: Abstract An algorithm is proposed for solving the problem of projecting the Hamiltonian onto a finite dimensional subspace in such a way that the groundstate of the projected Hamiltonian represents an optimalized approximation to the groundstate of the full (unprojected) Hamiltonian and simultaneously for obtaining the groundstate of the projected Hamiltonian.

Notes: Abstract The Lausanne ideal MHD stability code ERATO is used to investigate spectral properties of Solovèv's equilibrium at small aspect ratios. Two different elongations are considered. Both free and rigid boundary models are computed and compared. Modes characterized by a large radial extension have been found which appear to be due to a coupling ofm=1 andm=2 modes due to toricity. The internal modes spectrum is compared with the predictions of the full mercier criterion, taking into account its spatial dependence, and with the ballooning modes stability criterion.
