Summary Bromine was found to be an effective initiator for the cationically induced oligomerization of vinylformamide (VFA). Oligomeric products with molecular weights between 200 and 1500 g/mol were obtained. The structures of the oligo(vinylformamides) (OVFA) were investigated by means of NMR spectroscopy, GPC, and MALDI-TOF-MS. The influence of the reaction temperature on yield, DP, and head group functionality of the obtained OVFA was investigated. When the 1: 1 adduct of bromine with VFA was used as initiator at 253 K, also oligomeric products are obtained.
