Notes: Abstract Laparoscopic gynecologic surgery has gained worldwide popularity in the past few years, but complications of this new technique do occur. We encountered three patients who developed major complications after laparoscopic gynecologic procedures including perforation of the sigmoid colon, urinary bladder, and ureter. We report the computed tomographic findings of these cases and the diagnostic dilemmas they posed.

Notes: Objective  To evaluate the sex ratio among pregnancies complicated by first trimester hyperemesis gravidarum and extend previous findings to include a measure of severity.Design  Population-based case control study.Setting  All non-federal hospitals in Washington State.Population  Two thousand and one hundred and ten pregnant women hospitalised for hyperemesis gravidarum and 9783 pregnant women without hyperemesis gravidarum. Methods  The infant sex ratio for pregnant women admitted to the hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum was evaluated using the Washington State hospital discharge database linked to the birth certificate database for years 1987–1996. Cases were pregnant women hospitalised for hyperemesis gravidarum (International Classification for Diseases—9th edition [ICD-9] diagnosis code 643) in the first trimester. Controls were women who experienced a singleton live birth and were not hospitalised for hyperemesis in Washington State during the same time period. Regression analysis with general estimating equations was used to calculate an odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to assess the association of hyperemesis gravidarum with infant sex ratio.Main outcome measure  Infant sex ratio. Results  Pregnant women hospitalised for hyperemesis gravidarum in the first trimester had a 50% increased odds of having a female infant compared with controls (OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.4, 1.7). Women hospitalised for three or more days had the greatest odds of having a female infant compared with control women (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.5, 2.0).Conclusion  Hyperemesis gravidarum is associated with an increase in female live births and may be a marker for high oestrogen levels in utero.

Notes: Abstract Different NAA plus kinetin or BA combinations were tested on Francia Pernod fennel seedlings for callus induction and plant regeneration. Callogenesis from hypocotyls was obtained in all auxin/cytokinin-containing media. The organogenic response was observed especially in presence of NAA plus kinetin. The highest frequency of shoot regeneration was found when the auxin and kinetin were used at a 1:1 ratio. Moreover, a prolonged culture period increased shoot formation. Somatic embryogenesis was tested on several fennel populations. The results gave evidence of the genotypic importance. Two different protocols were used for somatic embryo induction. Using the first protocol among the different fennel genotypes tested, only Francia Pernod showed embryogenic capacity. In this case, from a primary non-embryogenic callus cultured for 12 months in presence of 2,4-D, an embryogenic secondary callus was produced. When transferred to the medium without 2,4-D (agarized or liquid), this gave embryogenic plants in high frequency. As far as the second embryogenic method is concerned, secondary embryogenic callus developed only in the presence of 2,4-D plus kinetin in Francia Pernod genotype. Thereafter, the replacement of those growth regulators by GA3 into the medium greatly increased the somatic embryo development, especially in `Francia Pernod', but also in `Aboca erbe' callus, a population with a very poor embryogenic capacity. In Francia Pernod, the primary and secondary (embryogenic) calli showed different morphological and histological responses, either when the secondary callus was induced by 2,4-D alone or by 2,4-D plus kinetin. Ontogenetic processes leading to somatic embryo formation are described in this context.

Notes: Abstract The GlobalstarTM system provides telephone and data services to and from mobile and fixed users in the area between ±70 degrees latitude. Connection between user terminals and the PSTN is established through fixed terrestrial gateways via a constellation of low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites. Globalstar uses an extension of the IS‐95 CDMA standard that is used in terrestrial digital cellular systems. The LEO satellite link is sufficiently different from the terrestrial cellular link that certain departures from IS‐95 were needed both in signal design as well as in system operation. This paper describes some of the similarities and differences of Globalstar air interface versus IS‐95.

Notes: Abstract We review the propagation of energetic partons in hot or cold QCD matter, as known from recent work. We summarize advances in the understanding of both collisional and radiative energy loss. Our emphasis is on radiative energy loss, which has very interesting properties that may help to detect the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. We describe two different theoretical approaches, which lead to the same radiated gluon energy spectrum. The case of a longitudinally expanding QCD plasma is investigated. The energy lost by a jet with given opening angle is calculated with the aim of making predictions for the suppression (quenching) of hard jet production. Phenomenological implications for the difference between hot and cold matter are discussed. Numerical estimates of the loss suggest that it may be significantly greater in hot matter than in cold. This makes the magnitude of the radiative energy loss a remarkable signal for quark-gluon plasma formation.

Notes: We present intensity-modulated photocurrent and infrared transmittance measurements on dye-sensitized solar cells based on a mesoporous titania (TiO2) matrix immersed in an iodine-based electrolyte. Under short-circuit conditions, we show that an elementary analysis accurately relates the two measurements. Under open-circuit conditions, infrared transmittance, and photovoltage measurements yield information on the characteristic depth at which electrons recombine with ions (the "locus of recombination"). For one particular series of samples recombination occurred near the substrate supporting the titania film, as opposed to homogeneously throughout the film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
