Notes: Abstract Nicotinamide (NA) yields a polarographic catalytic wave with a peak potential –1.38 V (vs. SCE) in 0.1 mol/L HAc-NaAc (pH 4.7)/4 × 10–3 mol/L KIO3 buffer solution. The sensitivity of the catalytic wave increased in one order of magnitude as compared to that of the responding reduction wave without KIO3. Based on this observation, a new method for the determination of NA was recommended. The second order derivative peak current was proportional to the NA concentration in the range of 5 × 10–8 – 6 × 10–7 mol/L. 0.11-fold vitamin B1, 0.13-fold B2, 0.14-fold B6 and 8-fold nicotinic acid amounts do not interfere the determination of 1 × 10–6 mol/L NA. The proposed method was used to determine the NA content in multivitamin tablets, with good agreement to the declared amount.

Notes: Abstract Observations made by the Hinotori satellite have been analysed to determine the yearly variations of the electron density and electron temperature in the low-latitude topside ionosphere. The observations reveal the existence of an equinoctial asymmetry in the topside electron density at low latitudes, i.e. the density is higher at one equinox than at the other. The asymmetry is hemisphere-dependent with the higher electron density occurring at the March equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and at the September equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. The asymmetry becomes stronger with increasing latitude in both hemispheres. The behaviour of the asymmetry has no significant longitudinal and magnetic activity variations. A mechanism for the equinoctial asymmetry has been investigated using CTIP (coupled thermosphere ionosphere plasmasphere model). The model results reproduce the observed equinoctial asymmetry and suggest that the asymmetry is caused by the north-south imbalance of the thermosphere and ionosphere at the equinoxes due to the slow response of the thermosphere arising from the effects of the global thermospheric circulation. The observations also show that the relationship between the electron density and electron temperature is different for daytime and nighttime. During daytime the yearly variation of the electron temperature has negative correlation with the electron density, except at magnetic latitudes lower than 10°. At night, the correlation is positive.

Notes: In order to clarify the effectiveness of ultrasonication on vaccine delivery, juvenile sea bream, Pagrus major, were treated with eight different ultrasonic methods. A mixed vaccine against Vibrio alginolyticus and V. anguillarum was used to immunize the fish. The intensity and frequency of the ultrasound were 280 mW cm–2 and 35 kHz, respectively. The ultrasonic methods included continuous or pulsed ultrasound for 3 min, and continuous or pulsed ultrasound for 3 min before and/or after immersion for 3 min. Of all the eight ultrasonic methods tested, `pulsed ultrasound followed by immersion' and `immersion, pulsed ultrasound, and followed by immersion again' provided the best protection, which were comparable with protection of fish immunized by intraperitoneal injection. Moreover, the convenience of applying these two ultrasonic methods for immunization was comparable with the immersion method and was much better than intraperitoneal injection. If 2 × 108 CFU mL–1 of this mixed vaccine was used for vaccination repeatedly five times by ultrasonic methods, it could still produce good protection for the immunized sea bream. Therefore, the ultrasonic method is an effective and practical approach for fish vaccination on a large scale.

Notes: : Testing for Morganella morganii, a prolific histamine former, was carried out in fish and processing plant to determine its origin and contamination source using PCR assay coupled with Southern hybridization. M. morganii was mostly found in mackerel and sardines but rarely in albacore. It was most frequently present in the gill followed by the skin but rarely in the intestine and cavity. No M. morganii was found in the processing plant but was detected on the surfaces of conveyer belts and plastic totes during processing. The compiled results indicated that histamine-forming bacteria are endogenous to fish and pointed out the importance of sanitation in the processing plant to prevent cross-contamination.

Notes: Temperature- and field-dependent electroluminescence and quantum efficiency have been investigated in tris-(8-hydroxy) quinoline aluminum (Alq3) light-emitting diodes over the temperature range from 10 to 300 K. At lower applied voltage, two peaks have been observed in the quantum efficiency with temperature. The two peaks are attributed to the deep trap levels (high-temperature regime) and shallow trap levels (low-temperature regime) in Alq3. With increasing voltage, the high-temperature peak shifts toward lower temperature but no significant shift of the low-temperature peak is observed. At voltage around 10 V, superposition of two peaks causes the apparent saturation in the low-temperature regime of the quantum efficiency. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It has been documented that sex hormone may play a role in the pathogenesis of murine lupus. To determine the effect of tamoxifen (TAM) on NZB/W F1 female mice, a total dose of 800 μg (22 mg/kg body weight) of TAM was administered subcutaneously every 2 weeks. The control mice were injected with peanut oil only. After treatment with TAM for 5 months, the mice were killed and immunological parameters were evaluated. The results suggest that NZB/W F1 mice treated with TAM had less severe proteinuria and increased survival rate compared to controls. Flow cytometric analysis of splenocytes revealed a significantly lower percentage of B cells and CD5+ B cells in the TAM-treated group. There was a significantly lower serum level of soluble tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptor I and II molecules in the TAM-treated mice. Immunohistological study showed that control mice had severe immune complex deposition in the kidney. In contrast, TAM-treated mice had much less pathological change. In summary, this study demonstrated that TAM treatment might be able to alleviate the symptoms of lupus nephritis, influence B-cell count, modulate the expression of cytokine receptors and thereby subsequently affect immune function. Further studies to determine the cellular mechanisms in lupus nephritis may increase our understanding of this complex disease and provide additional targets for therapeutic intervention.

Notes: Temperature-dependent quantum efficiency in the device structure indium-tinoxide/[(2-methoxy-5(2′-ethylhexyloxy-)-p-phenylenevinylene)]/Ca/Al has been investigated over the temperature range from 20 to 296 K. A blueshift is observed in the electroluminescence spectra with an increasing temperature or voltage. From Fourier transform infrared spectra and UV-visible analyses have been observed that the conjugated length of the polymer chain decreases due to photo oxidation under UV component of sun light. The change in band gap resulting from the change in the conjugated length causes the observed blueshift. Quantum efficiency increases with decreasing temperature partly because of the enhancement of photoluminescence efficiency and partly because of the improved balance of holes and electrons. At a fixed temperature, an optimum voltage is required to obtain the maximum efficiency, and with increasing temperature, this voltage increases. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
