    Notes: Abstract The effect of applying ultrasound in anodic stripping voltammetry analysis of Cd2+ in pH 4.6 buffer containing the surfactant Triton X-100 has been investigated. Manipulation of the horn intensity and the horn/electrode distance was found to reduce the deleterious influence of the surfactant on the height of the cadmium peak. The system has been optimised to take advantage of the in situ cleaning action offered by ultrasound. As a result facile detection of Cd2+ (0.05–4 μM) in solutions containing 10 μg/mL Triton X-100 can be achieved without recourse to sample pretreatments or electrode modifications.

    Notes: Summary Background White sponge naevus (WSN) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder that predominantly affects noncornified stratified squamous epithelia, most commonly the buccal mucosa. Clinically, WSN manifests as thickened spongy mucosa with a white opalescent tint in the mouth and may be confused with other disorders that cause white lesions on oral mucosa. Recent studies have identified pathogenic mutations in KRT4 and KRT13, the genes encoding mucosa-specific keratins, in WSN. Objectives To search for possible mutations in KRT4 and KRT13. Methods We report a case of WSN in a young man who presented with diffuse irregular whitish plaques involving the buccal and gingival mucosae and the tongue. Results Pathologically, the affected mucosa showed epithelial thickening, parakeratosis and extensive vacuolization of the suprabasal keratinocytes. Mutation analysis revealed a heterozygous missense mutation 1345G→A in KRT4, predicting an amino acid change, E449K, in the 2B domain of the K4 polypeptide. Conclusions We report the first mutation analysis of a Taiwanese patient with WSN. Potentially this novel mutation could disrupt the stability of keratin filaments and result in WSN.

    Notes: Summary Background Hailey–Hailey disease (HHD) is an autosomal dominant disorder with recurrent eruption of vesicles and bullae involving predominantly the neck, groin and axillary regions. Histopathology shows suprabasal cleavage in epidermal cells. Recent studies have revealed that HHD is caused by mutations in the ATP2C1 gene encoding a novel Ca2+ pump. Objectives To analyse the mutations of the ATP2C1 gene in Taiwanese patients with HHD. Methods In total, five familial and two sporadic cases of HHD were retrieved from the medical records. The diagnosis of HHD was made based on the characteristic clinical features and histopathological evidence. All 27 exons and flanking intron boundaries were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and products analysed by direct sequencing. Results We identified six novel mutations and one reported mutation: three deletion mutations (nt884–904del, 1459delCTCA, 1975delA), two non-sense mutations (R39X, R783X), one mis-sense mutation (A730T) and one splicing mutation (483 + 2T→A). The non-sense mutation R39X had been reported previously; the other six mutations are novel mutations. Conclusions These results demonstrate that a spectrum of ATP2C1 gene mutations is present in Taiwanese HHD patients.

    Notes: We report here the bulge testing results of both dense and porous poly-arylethers (PAE) polymeric low dielectric constant thin films. These films were prepared on a 4.7-μm-thick Si membrane window of 1600×1600 μm2. The Si membrane was subsequently removed in a pulsed XeF2 etcher and the remaining thin film became the bulge test sample. The biaxial moduli of both the dense and 40% porosity low-k PAE thin films were measured to be 6.40±0.35 and 3.53±0.70 GPa, respectively. These biaxial moduli, when combined with the thermal stress data of these films, enabled us to estimate the thermal expansion coefficients in the range of 26.8–32.6 and 56.1–72.5 ppm/°C for the dense and porous PAE films, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The transformation of carbon supported Pt clusters under potential control in 1M HClO4 solution was investigated by in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Both XANES and EXAFS data are used to show the structure evolution of the Pt clusters at various potentials. It showed that the white line area and the edge energy increase with the applied potential in the range 0.11̃.5V. The coordination number of oxygen and platinum on the Pt/C electrode increases and decreases, respectively, with the applied potential. It is found that the size of Pt cluster does not grow during the electrode fabrication. However, the crystallization of Pt cluster occurs during the potential cycling.

    Notes: Non-lethal heat-shock (HS) treatment has previously been shown to induce thermotolerance in soybean (Glycine max cv. Kaohsiung No.8) seedlings. This acquired thermotolerance correlates with the de novo synthesis of heat-shock proteins (HSPs). Interestingly, we found that ethanol treatments also elicited HS-like responses in aetiolated soybean seedlings at their normal growth temperature of 28 °C. Northern blot analyses revealed that the expression of HS genes hsp17.5, hsp70 and hsc 70 was induced by ethanol. Radioactive amino acids were preferentially incorporated into high molecular weight (HMW) HSPs rather than class I low molecular weight (LMW) HSPs during non-lethal ethanol treatments. Immunoblot analysis confirmed that no accumulation of class I LMW HSPs occurred after non-lethal ethanol treatment. Pre-treatment with a non-lethal dose of ethanol did not provide thermotolerance, as the aetiolated soybean seedlings could not survive a subsequent heat shock of 45 °C for 2 h. In contrast, non-lethal HS pre-treatment, 40 °C for 2 h, conferred tolerance on aetiolated soybean seedlings to otherwise lethal treatments of 7·5% ethanol for 8 h or 10% ethanol for 4 h. These results suggest that plant class I LMW HSPs may play important roles in providing both thermotolerance and ethanol tolerance.

    Notes: Abstract Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is an uncommon congenital anomaly in which the anatomical presentations vary widely among patients. We hereby present two newborns with TAPVC associated with asplenia syndrome; both had severe esophageal varices due to infradiaphragmatic pulmonary venous drainage. Ultrafast computed tomography (CT) scanning was superior to color Doppler echocardiography and cardiac catheterization as it provided a detailed portrait of the pulmonary drainage. The remarkable radiographic manifestations are presented.
