Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. We describe a single level intervertebral approach to decompress two adjacent involved nerve roots in cases of cervical spondylosis. The operation was undertaken in 4 patients. We carried out discectomy, partial excision of the vertebral body with removal of the anteromedial part of the pedicles, removal of osteophytes and excision of the posterior longitudinal ligament, followed by an anterior interbody fusion. Fusion was achieved with the spine in normal lordosis and without complications. Pain and motor weakness was relieved in every case. This procedure can maintain movement at one additional disc level and has a better fusion rate than multilevel interbody fusion.

Notes: Abstract Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens IFO13599 could produce xanthan gum (18.5 mg/100 mg, lactose) with lactose as the growth substrate in spite of a low level of β-galactosidase. This productivity corresponded to one-fifth that with glucose. This strain could also produce ice-nucleating material having an ice-nucleating temperature, T 50, of −2.8 °C with xanthan gum in the culture broth. We found that this strain produced both materials in whey medium from which the insoluble components had been removed. The production of xanthan with ice-nucleating material reached a maximum after cultivation for 168 h under optimum conditions. Furthermore, the xanthan obtained had a low viscosity because of its variant structure revealed, by TLC and HPLC analyses, to be lacking pyruvic acid. Furthermore, we concluded that this mixture had considerable potential as a regeneratic agent, when compared to other regeneratic agents such as carboxymethylcellulose.

Notes: Non-cirrhotic, long-standing portal hypertension of unknown aetiology is being re-evaluated histopathologically and clinically. In this study, we examined 107 livers with this condition (92 wedge biopsy and 15 autopsy specimens) from five institutions in Japan. These cases were histologically categorized into four groups: idiopathic portal hypertension (66 cases), nodular regenerative hyperplasia (14 cases), partial nodular transformation (two cases), and incomplete septal cirrhosis (25 cases). These four groups shared several histological features: dense portal fibrosis with portal venous obliteration and intralobular slender fibrosis. In addition, the histopathological features characteristic of one group were also found to a mild degree in other groups. The histopathological lesions preceding portal venous obliteration remain speculative. However, the portal venous obliteration may be responsible for the occurrence of sustained portal hypertension and several of the pathological changes in these livers. It seems likely that idiopathic portal hypertension, nodular regenerative hyperplasia, partial nodular transformation and incomplete septal cirrhosis comprise a family of non-cirrhotic, long-standing portal hypertension in Japan, and the histological differences between them may reflect chronological progression of a single disease.

Notes: We examined the antinociceptive effect of intrathecally administered magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) in rats, using acute pain models including mechanical pressure, heat and subcutaneous formalin injection. According to the locomotion test 10 μl of 6.2% MgSO4 did not produce motor paralysis. At the same dose, responses to pressure and heat were intact, compared with controls given saline. MgSO4 produced depression of pain responses only after the first 10 min in the formalin test. Our studies indicated that MgSO4 did not show remarkable antinociceptive effects in acute pain models.

Notes: We have measured Raman spectra of diamond with nanometer size, called cluster diamond. The Raman bands assigned to sp2 and sp3 clusters have been observed at around 1600 and 1322 cm−1, respectively. This result suggests that the cluster diamond slightly contains the sp2 cluster. The Raman band assigned to sp3 cluster is found to shift by −10 cm−1, compared with that of bulk crystal and to be asymmetric with some tailing toward lower Raman frequency. The observed Raman spectrum agrees well with that calculated by a phonon confinement model. The crystallite size of the cluster diamond estimated from the phonon confinement model agrees approximately with that estimated from x-ray measurement. Raman spectroscopy gives some information about the crystallite size of diamond particles with nanometer size. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Wettability of electrolytically oxidized graphite fibers has been investigated by contact angle measurements employing the Wilhelmy method. The atomic ratio of oxygen to carbon, O/C, in the surface layer of the graphite fiber increased with increasing electric specific charge. Contact angle hysteresis was not observed for the untreated graphite fiber (O/C=0.01). The contact angles decreased with increasing O/C, especially for the receding angle, and approached constant for O/C〉0.2. The nondispersive and dispersive surface free energies of the oxidized graphite fibers were calculated from the experimentally determined contact angles. The nondispersive surface free energy increased by the oxidation, whereas the dispersive one decreased. From the results of surface analysis, it was found that the changes in the nondispersive and dispersive surface free energies were caused by the increase in O/C ratio and the decrease in surface crystallinity, respectively.
