    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une étude morphologique et en IRM des terminaisons du tendon distal du m. semi-membraneux et des structures postérieures de la capsule du genou a été réalisée à partir de 42 genoux de cadavres. Un faisceau tendineux du m. semi-membraneux s'insérant sur la corne postérieure du ménisque latéral a été trouvée dans 43,2 % des genoux disséqués en plus des cinq faisceaux déjà connus : capsulaire, direct, antérieur et inférieur, ainsi que le lig. poplité oblique. Ce faisceau présentait trois types morphologiques : fin, large, rond. Quel que soit son type, sa traction vers l'arrière mobilisait le ménisque latéral. De ce fait, le m. semi-membraneux aurait également un rôle protecteur sur le ménisque latéral, identique à celui déjà décrit pour le ménisque médial lors de la flexion du genou. Lorsque le tendon du m. semi-membraneux présente un faisceau d'insertion sur la corne postérieure du ménisque latéral, il est difficile en IRM de différencier cette insertion d'une rupture du ménisque latéral et cela peut être une cause d'erreur diagnostique.
    Notes: Summary Forty-two cadaver knees were used for morphologic and MRI observations of the tendinous distal expansions of the semimembranosus m. and the posterior capsular structures of the knee. A tendinous branch of the semimembranosus m. inserting into the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus was found in 43.2% of the knees dissected, besides five already known insertional branches; capsular, direct, anterior and inferior, as well as the oblique popliteal ligament. The tendon had three morphologic types; thin, broad and round. All three types moved the lateral meniscus posteriorly when pulled on. Thus, the semimembranosus m. may also have a protective function for the lateral meniscus as well as the already well established function of protecting the medial meniscus in knee flexion. When a semimembranosus tendon attachment to the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus is present, its normal insertion is difficult to differentiate from a lateral meniscus tear in MRI and this may cause misdiagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract The phytopathogenic, gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae 61 contains three isozymes of catalase (EC 1.11.1.6), which have been proposed to play a role in the bacterium's responses to various environmental stresses. To study the role of individual isozymes, the gene coding for the catalytic subunit of one catalase isozyme was cloned from a cosmid library hosted in Escherichia coli DH5α by using a designed catalase-specific DNA probe for the screening. One out of four clones with a catalase-positive genotype was subcloned and a pUC19-based 2.7 × 103-base (2.7-kb) insert subclone, pMK3E5, was used to transform catalase-deficient E. coli strain UM255 (HPI−, HPII−). The transformants contained a single isozyme of catalase that had electrophoretic and enzymic properties similar to catalase isozyme CatF from P. syringae pv. syringae 61. Analysis of the sequenced 2.7-kb insert DNA revealed six putative open-reading frames (ORF). The 1542-base-pair DNA sequence of ORF2, called catF, encodes a peptide of 513 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular mass of 66.6 kDa. The amino acid sequence deduced from catF had homology to the primary structure of true catalases from mammals, plants, yeasts and bacteria. The activity of the recombinant catalase was inhibited by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole and azide and stimulated by chloramphenicol. The N terminus contained a signal sequence of 26 amino acids necessary for secretion into the periplasm, a so-far unique property of Pseudomonas catalases.

    Notes: A novel in situ sample cleavage technique has been developed for fabricating specimens for cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy applications. This technique can be easily adapted to any ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope that has coarse motion and tip ex- change capabilities. A 90° bent diamond tip attached to a tip holder is used to make micron long scratches on GaAs(001) surfaces along a 〈110〉 direction. The sample is then fractured and the cross-sectional surface is scanned in the conventional way. Atomic resolution images of {110}-type GaAs surfaces are readily and reproducibly obtained. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Suspension cultures derived from Lycium chinense Miller seedlings produced significant amounts of a hepatoprotective cerebroside. Callus was induced from the stem of aseptic seedlings of L. chinense and maintained on MS solid media supplemented with 1.0 ppm 2,4-D and 0.1 ppm kinetin. Suspension cultures were established, and the cells were grown in the same liquid media in the dark. Lyophilized cells were extracted with a combined reagent of chloroform and methanol (2:1, v/v). An aqueous suspension of the evaporated cell extract was partitioned with chloroform, and the chloroform layer was subjected to silicic acid column chromatography followed by semi-preparative reverse phase C8 high pressure liquid chromatography. The purified compound showed hepatoprotective activity comparable to that shown by silymarin, and the structure was identified as 1-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-(2S,3R,4E,8Z)-2-N-2′-hydroxy-(palmitoyl)-4,8-sphingadiene on the basis of spectral data. The content of the compound in cultured cell was tenfold higher than that of the fruit of L. chinense. The biosynthesis of the compound in cultured cell systems appears to parallel cell growth.

    Notes: Summary The low temperature relaxation of epoxy resin modified with siloxane oligomers was investigated by using thermally stimulated current (TSC) and relaxation map analysis (RMA). The β-relaxation of epoxy resin and the glass transition temperature of siloxane oligomer were folded and shifted to higher temperature as the concentration of trifluoropropyl (TFP) in siloxane oligomer increased. In the systems containing over 50% of TFP a new relaxation peak due to the dipole orientation was observed at around-45°C. As the concentration of TFP increased the compensation temperature (Tc) and the degree-of-disorder (DOD) were increased while the compensation time, τc was decreased.

    Notes: Low-energy (1–1.5 kV) nitrogen-ion bombardment of sharply pointed Fe-3 at. % Mo tips is performed, at room temperature and 473 K, by applying a negative voltage to the tip in the presence of nitrogen gas (10−3–10−5 Torr) in an ultrahigh vacuum atom-probe field-ion microscope (APFIM). Tip sharpening, as a consequence of sputtering, is observed directly in situ via APFIM. This sharpening phenomenon can be explained by the inertia effect on the trajectories of the field-emitted electrons and nitrogen ions that results in sputtering of the shank of the tip. We also observe that the implanted low-energy (1–1.5 kV) nitrogen ions react with the molybdenum atoms in solid solution in this Fe(Mo) alloy to produce immobile molecular diameter nitrides at room temperature and 473 K. The measured range profile of the implanted 1.5 kV nitrogen species is compared with results calculated using the TRIM.SP Monte Carlo code. This comparison implies that the ionized nitrogen molecules (N21+), generated by the field-emitted electrons, obtain the full potential energy of the tip before bombarding the tip's surface and then dissociating into nitrogen ions (N1+) at or near the surface. The experimental nitrogen range profile is quantitatively fitted to the Edgeworth expansion of the normal distribution function. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The molecular dynamics and ordering of polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal displays are studied using the technique of paramagnetic resonance of spin probes. A complex spectrum is observed in which components are identified from probes dissolved in the droplet, binder, and interfacial regions of the display. In particular, the liquid-crystal curing, phase separation, and structure of displays with both thermoplastic and epoxy binders are investigated. Observations are also performed as the liquid-crystal droplet size is varied. Among the more interesting results is the demonstrated ability to observe the interfacial region. It appears to be quite fluid and has little or no average order. It is also observed that the compatibility between the binder and liquid crystal, seen from some of the formulations studied, correlates with the reported electro-optical properties. These include the magnitude and hysteresis of switching voltages and the magnitudes of switching times. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
