Notes: Summary Malignant neoplasms of sebaceous glands are rare; these generally occur in the ocular adnexae where sebaceous carcinoma presents as an infiltrating malignancy with a poor prognosis. Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma are rarer but have a better prognosis. Those tumors occur generally in older patients. A 32-year-old man is presented 10 years post-surgery with local recurrence and nodal metastasis. The potential course of this tumor is emphasized and the relevant literature reviewed.

Notes: Summary A child with severe idiopathic aplastic anemia was treated with cyclosporin A for 16 weeks. Skin necrosis occurred on the dorsum of the left hand; mucormycosis was cultured. An underlying osteomyelitis was suspected. The defect was covered with live donor allograft skin, since it was feared that there would be considerable bleeding from autograft donor sites. There was no evidence of graft rejection, either during treatment or in the year after cyclosporin A was withdrawn. No evidence of mucormycosis or osteomyelitis was seen subsequent to skin grafting.

Notes: Summary A cortico-cancellous flap from the anterolateral aspect of the upper third of the tibia was presented. Sixty lower limbs of “fresh” cadavers were dissected. The vascular bundle includes the anterior tibial artery and its recurrent collateral branches and recurrent and muscllo periostal arteries. The flap is harvested with the interosseous membrane and can be used either free or pedicled. We used this flap for two patients suffering from pseudarthrosis. Long range clinical and radiological results are good.

Notes: The performance of a 0.2 μm ceramic membrane for clarification of depectinized apple juice was studied. The results showed that the flux was higher at high feed velocities (14.6 m/seC) and high temperatures (50°C), and the transmembrane pressure was a positive factor only at high temperatures. The juice flux at optimal conditions was between 400–500 kg/hr.m2. Filtration of juice with pectin resulted in flux decreases of 40–50% compared to deoectinized juice. Periodic back-flushing during processing at optimal conditions, i.e., high temperature, high feed velocity and low pressure, did not significantly increase the juice flux.

Notes: Summary Direct (via the skull) and indirect (via the eyes) light on the rate of adaptation of circadian rhythms of pineal, retina and serum indoleamines and of locomotor activity was examined by observing photoperiod reversal in eye covered and normally sighted chickens. Eye covering did not affect indoleamine levels nor locomotor activity on the regular light:dark (L:D) cycle. However, following photoperiod reversal, the eye covered chickens showed slower rates of adaptation of retinal melatonin and locomotor activity to the new L:D cycle than did the normal sighted chickens. Pineal and serum indole levels were unaffected by eye covering. Our results in birds indicate that 1) light to the eye has a role in governing retinal melatonin and locomotor activity, 2) the pineal is directly photosensitive, and 3) the endogenous rhythm of pineal melatonin may play a role in the reentrainment of the locomotor rhythm in the chicken.

Notes: The yield stress of polyacetal (POM) decreases monotonically with the incorporation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer in POM/TPU blends as would be anticipated. However, the impact strength of the resultant POM/TPU blends increases initially up to 30% TPU and thereafter decreases with the addition of TPU. Stress relaxation measurements in simple extension were carried out for POM and its blends with 10, 20, and 30% TPU at a constant temperature (30°C). Rate of loss of the relaxation modulus was found to be a nonlinear function of time. It has been demonstrated that the stress relaxation modulus values measured at different strains can be superimposed by a shift along the logarithmic time axis to yield master curves of modulus over an extended time period. It has also been found that while it is possible to determine, at any strain, relaxation curves covering an appreciable time range, the demarcation of linear and nonlinear behavior ranges of stress could not be done for these materials as all the strain values chosen in our experiments were in the region of linear behavior. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
