Notes: Abstract The binding of sodium dodecyl sulfate and a hydrophilic color coupler anion to gelatin was investigated using a surfactant-selective electrode. The binding isotherms of the surfactants to an alkali-processed bone gelatin, as well as an acid-processed bone gelatin were determined and compared with viscosity data. The comparison shows that viscosity measurements can only be regarded as circumstantial evidence for binding. At nearly identical binding isotherms the viscosity curves were found to be very different.

Notes: Abstract An approximate analytical solution is obtained for the adsorption kinetics equation derived earlier. On the basis of these relations the importance of the consideration of a non-equilibrium diffuse layer has been shown. To describe the retarded adsorption kinetics the distribution of adsorbed ions in the diffuse layer section of multivalent surfactant ions has been taken into account. The rate of adsorption calculated for a non-ionic surfactant is compared with the adsorption rate for monovalent and bivalent ionic surfactants, respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of Mechanical Activation on Thermal Decomposition of GibbsiteThe influence of mechanical activation on structure and reactivity of gibbsite in dependence on stress mechanism (pressure stress and shearing in vibration-mills, shock stress in disintegrators) is investigated. With increasing mechanical treatment the degree of order is decreased. Mechanically disturbed gibbsite shows changed decomposition series. After mechanical activation and short-time heating there are formed nearly X-ray amorphous Al2O3 with high spec. surfaces. It is possible to transform these alumina into pseudo-boehmite with a very low alkali content. The transformation into pseudo-boehmite is dependent on the degree of order of the mechanically pretreated gibbsite and is independent of the spec. surface of X-ray amorphous Al2O3. The products can be used for the preparation of adsorbents and catalyser components.

Notes: Abstract The extracellular hemolysin fromGardnerella vaginalis (GVH) was purified 88-fold and partially characterized. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed a molecular weight of 59 kD. The hemolysin is most active at pH 6. The mechanism of hemolysis involves one temperature-dependent binding step followed by cell lysis. GVH does not act like an enzyme but is firmly bound to the erythrocyte membrane and used up during the reaction. Osmotic protectants like sucrose and dextran 4 (4000–6000 D) do not protect the toxin-treated erythrocytes from lysis, but dextran 8 (8000–12,000 D) provides full protection. GVH is inactivated by cholesterol,α- andβ-glucosidase. A partial inactivation was found withα-mannosidase and N-acetylglucosaminidase. Human lymphocytes are about 100 times less susceptible than human erythrocytes. The specificity of GVH to human erythrocytes is very high. Red cells from monkey, horse, cow, sheep, and rabbit show less than 1% of human erythrocyte susceptibility.

Notes: Yeast protein isolate with 85% of pure protein and 1.2% of nucleic acids in dry matter was isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by a procedure of two pre-treatment steps, acidic extraction and isoelectric precipitation. The application of this yeast protein isolate was limited by its functionality resulting from the partially extreme isolating conditions. An enzymatic partial hydrolysis with Thermitase to a degree of hydrolysis of 5% not only improved the solubility and foaming properties, but also the water binding capacity and the emulsifying properties. The hydrolysate was free of bitter taste and could be applied either in two fractions of different solubility after centrifugation or as a whole product in food systems to improve the physiological and functional quality. The yeast protein hydrolysate had the same or even better properties than conventional protein products.

Notes: New macrolactones, named oasomycin A to D (1 to 4), were discovered by a chemical screening in the culture broth of Streptoverticillium baldacii subsp. netropse (strain FH-S 1625). The structures were established by detailed spectroscopic analysis. The fundamental 42-membered lactone moiety of oasomycin A and B (1 and 2) is analogous to that of desertomycin A (5), while the oasomycins C and D (3 and 4) are the first representatives of macrolactones bearing a 44-membered skeleton. These metabolites can be distinguished by side chain modifications at C-41 or C-43 as well as the presence of an α-linked D-mannose moiety attached to 22-OH. Due to the structural similarities the oasomycins are integrated into the desertomycin family. In vitro testing by using the HEP-G2 cell assay showed oasomycin A (1) to be an inhibitor of de novo cholesterol biosynthesis.

Notes: Summary This case report describes a patient presenting with symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, whose computerized tomographic (CT) scan was highly suggestive of a large low-grade glioma invading the basal ganglia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-demarcated space-occupying mass of increased intensity in the left lateral ventricle and adjacent white matter. Following stereotactic biopsy, which yielded a homogeneous jelly-like material, the mass was removed microsurgically and was found to be most like a colloid cyst on histological examination. Discussion focusses on the clinical and differential diagnostic implications of this very unusual combination of findings.

Notes: Abstract An infectious disease may reduce or even stop the exponential growth of a population. We consider two very simple models for microparasitic and macroparasitic diseases, respectively, and study how the effect depends on a contact parameter K. The results are presented as bifurcation diagrams involving several threshold values of к. The precise form of the bifurcation diagram depends critically on a second parameter ζ, measuring the influence of the disease on the fertility of the hosts. A striking outcome of the analysis is that for certain ranges of parameter values bistable behaviour occurs: either the population grows exponentially or it oscillates periodically with large amplitude.

Notes: Abstract Inferior mesenteric angiography was carried out in 14 patients with locoregional recurrence following sphincter-saving resection of a colorectal primary tumour in the left hemicolon or rectum. The aim was to check the margins of clearance of the lymphatic drainage. All patients had been operated on electively and with curative intent. All patients had a biopsy-proven recurrence and 11 of the 14 patients (79%) showed residual arteries that should have been resected at primary surgery, and at laparotomy for the recurrence incomplete resection of the lymphatic drainage area was confirmed. In 6 patients the recurrence was resected, in 4 of them with no evidence of microscopic residual disease. From these findings it may be argued that the lymph nodes incompletely resected at primary operation may have been the origin of the locoregional recurrence. Angiography may detect this situation, and may be worthwhile when planning a reintervention.
