    Notes: Summary The effects of the HMG CoA reductase inhibitors lovastatin and pravastatin on serum lipids, lipoproteins and apolipoproteins have been studied in 35 patients with primary hypercholesterolaemia. LDL cholesterol was lowered to the same extent by both agents compared on a mg basis of each drug per day. HDL cholesterol was increased by lovastatin but not by pravastatin. The reduction in serum triglycerides, VLDL triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol was more pronounced after lovastatin than pravastatin. After 1 year the effect of combined treatment with 40 mg pravastatin and 8 g cholestyramine on the reduction in LDL cholesterol (−39%) in 13 patients was comparable to that of 80 mg lovastatin plus 8 g cholestyramine (−40%) in 12 patients with identical baseline values. Differences were also found in the effects of the combination therapy with the two drugs on HDL cholesterol, serum triglycerides, VLDL triglycerides, VLDL cholesterol, and apolipoproteins.

    Notes: We present results on room-temperature photopumped lasing action in the blue region (∼4650 A(ring)) of the spectrum for double heterostructures with ZnSe active layers. The confining layers are ZnS0.06Se0.94, providing lattice match to the GaAs substrate. The room-temperature lasing, observed under pulsed excitation, yields threshold pump intensity as low as 58 kW cm−2 for an active layer thickness of 1500 A(ring).

    Notes: Electric field dependence of the optical absorption in the ZnSe0.35Te0.65-ZnSe type II superlattice has been studied. An extremely large blue shift of the absorption edge found for the structure makes it an attractive choice for the waveguide visible light modulators.

    Notes: Summary To establish whether additional therapy with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG) coenzyme A (CoA) reductase inhibitors enhances the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol lowering effect of LDL apheresis with immunoadsorption in the treatment of patients with familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease we studied eight patients initially on immunoadsorption therapy alone for 3 years. The adding of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors decreased pretreatment LDL cholesterol from 6.76±0.98 to 4.97±0.98 mmol/l and posttreatment LDL cholesterol from 2.33±0.80 to 1.94±0.67 mmol/l and increased pre- and posttreatment high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol by 0.08 and 0.13 mmol/l respectively. The LDL/HDL ratio was reduced from 4.0 to 2.8 (prior to any therapy the ratio was 13.4). The increase in LDL cholesterol between weekly treatments was less steep under the combined therapy. At the same time the treated plasma volume during LDL apheresis could be decreased from 5070±960 to 4370±1200 1200 ml. We conclude that in patients with severe familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia LDL apheresis should be combined with HMG CoA reductase inhibitors.

    Notes: Summary The Southwest Oncology Group conducted a phase II study of esorubicin treatment in patients with advanced endometrial cancer who had received no prior chemotherapy. Twenty of 31 patients were fully evaluable for response and toxicity. There were no clinical responses to treatment and 60% (12/20) of the patients developed severe or life threatening leukopenia on therapy. One evaluable patient was removed from study after a cumulative dose of 150 mg/M2 due to a reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction on MUGA scan and another developed congestive heart failure several months after discontinuation of treatment. Esorubicin has significant toxicity and limited clinical activity in patients with advanced endometrial cancer.

Im Fall eines 4 Monate alten Jungen konnte durch den Nachweis von alpha- I-Anti-Chymotryp sin and Lysozym ein groβes benignes fibröses kardiales Histiozytom diagnostiziert werden. Bei einem 2 Monate alten Mädchen wurde eine histiozytoide Kardiomyopathie durch Nachweis leptomerer Fibrillen and geringer Mengen von Desmin and Myosin gesichert.
    Notes: Summary The pathological findings, including immunohistochemical and electron microscopical findings, in three infants who died unexpectedly of cardiac tumor or cardiomyopathy are reported. The first was a 13-month-old boy with tuberous sclerosis and multiple rhabdomyomas of the heart, who presented with a postpartal cardiac murmur and moderate cardiomegaly. The further history was unknown. The rhabdomyoma nodules were composed of spider cells containing small amounts of desmin and myosin as well as isolated myofibrils. Microscopically small glioma nodules contained high amounts of GFAP. The second case, a boy 4 months of age, died of a large benign fibrous histiocytoma of the heart after an uneventful history. Tumor cells contained alpha- I-anti-chymotrypsin and lysozyme. The third case, a girl 2 months of age, died unexpectedly of histiocytoid cardiomyopathy. The affected cells contained fat droplets, glycogen granules, many leptomer myofibrils and small amounts of myosin and desmin.

    Notes: Electric field dependence of the exciton absorption in the ZnSe0.35Te0.65-ZnTe type II superlattice has been studied theoretically. Large effective blue shift of the absorption edge and strong modulation of the absorption prove that type II structures can be used in visible spatial light modulators and switches.

    Notes: The two-photon transitions from the confined states to the continuum in the semiconductor quantum wells and superlattices are considered theoretically. Both the two-photon absorption coefficient and the third order nonlinear susceptibility related to it are calculated. The results show that the nonlinear index of refraction as large as 10−9 cm2/W can be achieved in the important 10 μm region where the absorption is small, opening a possibility of operating nonlinear optical devices in the far infrared domain.
