    Notes: Summary The effect of inorganic phosphate concentrations on antibiotic and extracellular protein production by Myxococcus coralloides D have been examined. Antibiotic production by growing cells of this myxobacterium was maximal at phosphate concentrations of 10–20 mM, but was inhibited by concentrations higher than 20 mM. The total extracellular protein and the extracellular protein per cell ratio were independent of phosphate levels in the culture broth.

    Notes: Abstract Localised agenesis of the scalp is the most frequent patern in aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), a congenital absence of the skin and occasionally of deeper layers. Several clinical groups are characterised by the location and pattern of skin defects, associated malformations and the mode of inheritance. Death occurs in 20% of cases, secondary to the associated anomalies, to infections or to haemorrhage from ulceration of the sagittal sinus when there is also a defect of the underlying skull. In this latter case, we close the defect by two rotational scalp flaps (Orticochea technique) at birth. A three-dimensional CT study is useful for showing the extent of the skull defect and the deformity of the craniofacial complex and the changes in the bone after treatment.

    Notes: Summary The activity in α and γ efferent axon populations and in group I and group II afferent fibre populations innervating a flexor muscle, the sartorius medialis, was observed during spontaneous locomotor movements in the thalamic cat. Multi-unit discharges of each kind of fibre were obtained by electronic sorting of the action potentials from the overall activity of a thin, intact branch of the sartorius medialis nerve. The following results were obtained: (1) The γ-motoneurones have a phasic behaviour characterized by a single discharge period during the hip flexion (swing phase of the step-cycle). (2) The γ-motoneurones are co-activated with the homonymous α-motoneurones. (3) Between rhythmic α and γ discharges, i.e. during the hip extension (stance phase of the step cycle), both α- and γ-motoneurones were normally silent. However, in 5 out of 17 experiments, a few units of the γ population fired at very low frequency. (4) Two observations indicate that the γ-motoneurones that are co-activated with the α-motoneurones by central locomotor commands are predominantly of the static type. In actual locomotion, the rhythmic fusimotor discharges over-compensate the depressor effect on the firing rate of the group II afferents of the unloading of muscle spindles by the active shortening of the parent muscle. In fictive locomotion, when the transmission of the excitation is blocked by selective curarization in alpha skeleto-motor junctions alone, the rhythmic fusimotor discharges elicit in-phase modulations not only of the group I but also of the group II fibres. The group II afferent population consists almost entirely of fibres arising from spindle secondary endings which are located primarily on intrafusal muscle fibres whose contraction is exclusively controlled by static fusimotor motoneurones. In the two experimental circumstances, the analysis of the group I fibre discharge does not allow to decide whether dynamic γ motoneurones are firing or silent during rhythmic γ discharge. (5) The group I and group II afferent discharges during the step-cycle showed two frequency peaks, one static-fusimotor dependent while the contracting muscle shortened during the hip flexion (swing) phase, the other length-change dependent while the relaxed muscle was rapidly stretched during the first part of the hip extension (stance) phase. Then, during the second part of hip extension when the muscle was slowly stretched in the absence of fusimotor drive, the firing rate of the spindle afférents decreased to a low level. The spindle sensory endings during the extension phase showed low dynamic and static responsiveness like deefferented spindles. (6) The results obtained in sartorius medialis (flexor) muscle are discussed in comparison with the results previously obtained in gastrocnemii (extensor) muscles (Bessou et al. 1986). The consequences of the predominant activation of the static or dynamic fusimotor system in functionally different muscles are considered with respect to the proprioceptive or motor role of musclespindles during muscle contraction.

    Notes: Summary Mitochondrial DNA from the liver of a single Rasa Aragonesa sheep has been isolated and characterized. The size of the genome, determined by restriction enzyme analysis, was found to be 16.58 kbp. The cleavage sites for the restriction endonucleases BamHI, HindIII, EcoRI, BglII, PvuII, BstEII and PstI were mapped, and the gene organization deduced through heterologous hybridization using different cloned fragments of the rat mitochondrial genome. Fragments representative of the entire sheep genome were cloned in plasmid vectors pGEM3Z and pUN121.

    Notes: Summary Inbred lines of corn (Zea mays L.) have been characterized, which exhibit differential sensitivity to the sulfonylurea herbicide primisulfuron (2-[3-(4,6-bis(di-fluoromethoxy) pyrimidin-2-yl)-ureidosulfonyl]-benzoic acid methylester). When treated postemergence with 160 g a.i. per hectare, inbred 4CO exhibited complete tolerance while inbred 4N5 was killed. The F1 hybrid 4C0 x 4N5 was uniformly tolerant indicating dominance of the tolerance trait. The field observations correlated with laboratory tests in which seedling root growth was measured. Based on IC50, inbred 4CO was more than ten times more tolerant than inbred 4N5. In the F2 and F3 generations, a 3∶1 segregation of tolerant and sensitive individuals was observed, consistent with tolerance being inherited as a single dominant trait. Backcrosses of heterozygous F1 plants with the sensitive parent (4N5) yielded progeny that segreated at the expected 1∶1 ratio. Backcrosses with 4C0 yielded tolerant offspring only. Inhibition characteristics of acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS; E.C. 4.1.3.18) were determined. The enzymes from both inbreds and their F1 hybrid were equally sensitive and strongly inhibited by primisulfuron (IC50: 7 nM). The fate of 14C-labeled primisulfuron in seedling tissues of inbred 4C0 and the hybrid, 4C0 x 4N5, indicated rapid metabolism with a half-life (t 1/2) of approximately 3 h. On the other hand, the herbicide-sensitive inbred 4N5 was considerably slower to metabolize primisulfuron (t 1/2 〉24 h). These data indicate that differential metabolism is the mechanism of tolerance to the sulfonylurea herbicide primisulfuron in tolerant corn.

    Notes: Summary The content of the mitochondrial poly(A)-RNA fraction of human heart has been analyzed by electrophoresis through agarose slab gels in the presence of methyl mercury hydroxide and staining with ethidium bromide. It is possible to identify all the heavy strand coded mRNAs in the electrophoretic pattern. This pattern is qualitatively similar to that obtained from the mitochondria of cells cultured in vitro (HeLa cells), although differences in the relative amount of some components have been detected.

    Notes: Abstract Polyphosphate glucokinase and ATP glucokinase were detected in cell-free extracts of Myxococcus coralloides strain D, but pyrophosphate glucokinase was not detected. Both glucokinase activities were separated by chromatography. The approximate molecular weight is 61 000 for polyphosphate glucokinase and 47 000 for ATP glucokinase. Substrate specificity and pH optimum was studied in the polyphosphate glucokinase. Polyphosphate and ATP glucokinase activities were verified by 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamics of the two partners produced in dissipative collisions has been experimentally studied for the system40Ar + Ag at 27 MeV per nucleon. Primary masses of the fragments can then be calculated; the excitation energy partition between the two fragments is derived from the number of particles evaporated by each fragment. We found that this division evolves from equipartition to a repartition close to thermal equilibrium in the excitation energy range 300–350 MeV or interaction times 5-10×l0−22 s.

    Notes: Abstract The strength functions fore + e − pair decay of the isoscalar and isovector giant monopole resonances in highly excited nuclei are derived and used in a statistical model calculation of thee + e − pair energy spectrum from compound nuclear decay in110Sn following a fusion evaporation reaction. This result is then compared to thee + e − spectrum derived from internal pair decay of the giant dipole and giant quadrupole resonances. The computation shows that the pair decay from the excited-state GDR dominates the pair spectrum over the region of all giant resonances, exceedingL=0 transitions by at least a factor of ten. We also compute the angular correlations betweene + ande − for theL=0, L=1 andL=2 transitions and estimate their power to discriminate between the various multipolarities.
