Notes: Abstract We analyze the properties of theq-state ferromagnetic Potts model for realq. The nature of the phase transition at the critical point is first-order forq≠2, and second-order forq=2. The random-bond percolation limitq→1, and its second-order-like transition, are not related to the previous behaviour since they arise from non-stable phases of the system. It is suggested that this property characterizes the model on high-dimensional lattices, too.

Notes: Summary and conclusions Our results demonstrate that IL-1 promotes hematopoiesis in normal and radiation compromised animals. IL-1 protected mice from lethal hematopoietic syndrome when given before irradiation. Given after irradiation, IL-1 promoted recovery of mice and primates from radiation injury. A comparison of the effects of IL-1 in three different species indicated that hematopoiesis of mice, monkeys, and dogs is upregulated in a similar fashion by IL-1. These three species, however, vary greatly in their sensitivity to IL-1. Whereas mice and dogs tolerated doses greater than 1000 ⧎g/Kg of IL-1, 10 ⧎g/Kg of IL-1 in rhesus monkeys resulted in considerable toxic effects. Several activities of IL-1 may explain its bone marrow restorative properties. The induction with IL-1 of several hematopoietic growth factors: GM-CSF, G-CSF, M-CSF, IL 3, and IL 6, clearly contributes to the accelerated growth and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. The induction of scavenger proteins may serve to reduce post irradiation oxidative damage. Our work raised a number of additional questions concerning the potential therapeutic utility of IL-1. The ability of IL-1 to promote engraftment of allogeneic bone marrow cells will require further study. The optimal dosage, schedule, and route for IL-1 induction of hematopoiesis will need to be established. The observed synergy of IL-1 with TNF, IL 6, or CSF's may be useful in reducing the requisite doses of cytokines from pharmacological to physiological levels with concomitant reduction in toxic effects. The choice of proper cytokine combinations, however, may also be dependent on the clinical status of the patients.

Notes: Two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis has been used to follow changes in cell type specific and organelle localized polypeptides upon exposure of etiolated sorghum shoots and dark-grown resting Euglena to light. Total protein extracted from isolated bundle sheath strands and mesophyll protoplasts was resolved by 2-D gel electrophoresis. The cell type specific polypeptides were localized on the whole shoot 2-D gel map in order to determine changes in the levels of these polypeptides upon light exposure. An image analyzer was used to analyze fluorographs of 2-D gels of total Euglena protein pulse-labeled with [35S]sulfate in the dark, immediately upon light exposure and 1, 4, 14, 24, 48 and 72 h after light exposure. The subset of polypeptides whose relative rats of synthesis changes more than threefold immediately upon light exposure was i dentified. The different patterns of changes in the rate of synthesis of this subset of polypeptides were followed.

Notes: Summary We have conducted observations of possible microstructure on some zwitterionic polymers by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy. Two different solvents, with very different evaporation rates, were used to dessicate the samples onto the carbon covered microscope grids. While no sign of microstructure was apparent in the samples prepared from the more volatile solvent, a well defined grainy appearance was observed in the samples obtained from the less volatile solvent. This shows that sample preparation plays an important role on microstructure formation on zwitterionic polymers.
