    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract This papers gives a survey of possible speed-ups of matrix-multiplication by the methods due to S. Winograd and V. Straßen. Questions of implementation of the algorithms are investigated and formulas for the required additional core-memory are given. By using a machine model which is similar to existing computers the results given are of practical importance.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Diese Arbeit soll eine Übersicht über den möglichen Zeitgewinn geben, der durch den Einsatz der schnelleren Matrix-Multiplikationen von S. Winograd und V. Straßen erzielbar ist. Implementierungsfragen werden besprochen und der benötigte Zusatzspeicher wird ermittelt. Die Abschätzungen beruhen auf einem Rechner-Modell, welches den heutigen Rechenanlagen nachgebildet ist, und liefern daher realistische Ergebnisse.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird von einer Familie berichtet, in der durch mütterliche balancierte Translokation t(5;10)(p15;p13) eine unbalancierte Chromosomenkonstitution bei zwei Kindern entstand. Mit Hilfe der G-Bandenanalyse wurde sie als Trisomie des distalen Abschnitts des kurzen Armes von Chromosom 10 (p13→pter) identifiziert. Der Vergleich mit 15 Literaturberichten von Trisomie 10p bestätigt das Vorliegen eines charakteristischen Dysmorphiesyndroms.
    Notes: Abstract This is the report of a family in which a balanced translocation in the mother t(5;10)(p15;p13) led to an unbalanced chromosomal constitution in two children. It was identified by G-banding analysis as trisomy of the distal portion of the short arm of chromosome 10 (p13→pter). Comparison with 15 previous reports of trisomy 10p confirms the existence of a characteristic dysmorphic syndrome.

    Notes: Abstract Exostoses are benign cartilaginous tumors of bone. They can occur naturally or be induced by radiation therapy during the time of skeletal growth. We have observed exostoses in 28 of 218 children given repeated injections of radioactive bone-seeking 224Ra. The younger the age at irradiation, the higher the incidence of exostoses. Boys are more susceptible than girls. To our knowledge, none of these radiation-induced exostoses have become malignant, although 36 of these children have developed bone sarcomas elsewhere in the skeleton.

    Notes: Abstract The pattern of ribosomal proteins in plastids of a nonmendelian streptomycin resistant mutant does not differ from that of wildtype cells when compared by two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis. The protein pattern of a mendelian resistance mutant is changed, however. Since the resistance in this mendelian mutant is probably caused by a change in the ribosomal proteins, the resistance in the nonmendelian mutant must be considered as a change of the ribosomal RNA.

    Notes: Summary Electrophysiological experiments were done to investigate the effect of p-nitrophenyl diazonium fluoroborate (p-NPD) on motor endplates of the frog's m. cutaneus pectoris. The compound has no direct depolarizing effect on the postsynaptic membrane and stabilizes it irreversibly when added to the bath. Longtime iontophoretical applications of p-NPD produce a biphasic effect: initially a potentiation of the depolarizations due to acetylcholine (ACh) (both iontophoretically applied and presynaptically liberated), and subsequently an inhibition of the response to ACh. When the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is inactivated previously, only the inhibiting effect of the compound is demonstrable. The association constant of p-NPD to purified AChE and to membrane fragments of electroplax was determined by biochemical methods. The compound's affinity to the AChE was found to be about 20 times greater than to the acetylcholine receptor (AChR). Iontophoretical application of p-NPD to cholinergic neurons in the hippocampal cortex of the cat also produced the characteristic biphasic effect on ACh-induced activity of these investigated neurons. The results suggest that the biphasic effect depends on the capacity of p-NPD to combine with both the AChE and the AChR. The AChE is first inhibited with low concentrations thereby potentiating the ACh response. At higher concentrations the AChR's are progressively inhibited too, thereby diminishing the excitability of the postsynaptic membrane up to a complete block.

    Notes: Summary 1. To study the quantitative correlation between the stabilizing effect of toxiferine on the postsynaptic membrane and the number of drug binding sites at the motor endplate, experiments were performed on isolated mouse hemidiaphragms using combined electrophysiological and autoradiographic techniques. 2. The membrane stabilizing effect of 14C-toxiferine was investigated over a wide range of concentrations, in order to obtain not only muscle paralysis but the complete abolition of the endplate response to nerve stimulation. 3. Motor endplate activity was recorded intracellularly. For each concentration of the drug the percentage of endplates reacting to nerve stimulation with action potentials (a.p.), or with subliminal endplate potentials (e.p.p.), or being completely blocked, was determined. The mean amplitude of the e.p.p.'s was also calculated. 4. Reduction of the e.p.p. to an undetectable level required a concentration of 14C-toxiferine about 3 times greater than that which induced complete paralysis. 5. Correlation of these data with autoradiographic measurements demonstrated that decreasing e.p.p. amplitude corresponded to increasing values for the number of drug binding sites per endplate. Saturation was reached by that concentration which completely blocked the postsynaptic sensitivity to ACh. 6. It is concluded that at this concentration all the specific drug binding sites are occupied.

    Notes: Abstract A new genus of marine methanogenic bacteria and two species within this genus are described.Methanogenium is the proposed genus andMethanogenium cariaci the type species. Cells of the type species are Gram-negative, peritrichously flagellated, irregular cocci with a periodic wall surface pattern. Colonies formed by these bacteria are yellow, circular and umbonate with entire edges. The DNA base composition is 52 mol% guanine plus cytosine. Formate or hydrogen and carbon dioxide serve as substrates for growth. Cells ofMethanogenium marisnigri are of similar shape but smaller diameter thanM. cariaci. The colonies ofM. marisnigri are convex, and the DNA base composition is 61 mol % G+C. Formate or hydrogen and carbon dioxide are growth substrates. Sodium chloride is required for growth of both methanogens.
