    Notes: Summary Five new cases are added to the single published instance of Yq to Xp translocation (Xt) in man. It is shown that the anomaly can occur as a mutational event during meiosis, and can be inherited from a parent, but also that it can arise in a 47,XXY embryo. In individuals with 46,XXt karyotype the gonadal development, sexual differentiation, gonadal function and fertility are within the range of normal females. They do not present overt or discrete sings of virilisation. However, somatic stigmata, and more specifically short stature, are present in all patients. There is no uniform pattern of Xt inactivation which varies from random to apparently preferential inactivation. This phenomenon may be important for the better understanding of X-inactivation which for the Xt the authors believe is random but followed by differential proliferation of the resulting two types of cells.

    Notes: Summary Microelectrode recordings were made from dorsal column postsynaptic (DCPS) fibres, in the fasciculus gracilis of the cat, at thoracic level Th 12, and from single cells in the nucleus gracilis. The sensitivity of the fibres (Th 12) and cells (bulbar level) to both gentle and noxious stimuli was studied and a classification of the units was made on the basis of their responses to these natural stimuli. The DCPS fibres have been classified into three groups: i) 16.3% of them were activated only by light mechanical stimuli, ii) a few responded to nothing but noxious mechanical stimuli, iii) 77% were characterized by their sensitivity to both gentle and noxious stimuli and constituted the polymodal group. The study of the nucleus gracilis cells revealed that 31.2% of the total number of cells investigated in the nucleus were also characterized by a high degree of modality convergence (polymodal cells). Besides their convergence, the polymodal DCPS fibres and the polymodal cells of the nucleus gracilis were functionally in contrast to the properties of the specific fibres and cells of the dorsal column system in other respects: i) they responded with a slowly adapting response to constant mechanical stimulation of the skin, ii) they were sensitive to noxious mechanical and thermal stimuli. It is argued that the polymodal cells could be the bulbar relay of the impulses conveyed through the DCPS fibres of the fasciculus gracilis. The possible role of the dorsal column system in nociception is discussed in the light of these results.

    Notes: Summary The aim of this study was to investigate whether an individual Golgi tendon organ can signal the contraction of motor units with different physiological properties. The axonal conduction velocity and tetanic tension of motor units were examined in four muscles of the cat leg (peroneus brevis, peroneus longus, tibialis anterior and soleus). The motor units which were found to activate a given tendon organ had contractile properties dispersed over the same range as those of the whole muscle population. The proportion of tendon organ-activating motor units found in the studied samples suggests that altogether, the Golgi tendon organs of a muscle monitor the contraction of every motor unit in this muscle.

    Notes: Summary Microelectrode recordings were made from dorsal column fibres at the 12th thoracic segment in cats. Two kinds of activity were elicited by electric shocks applied on the sciatic nerve in the popliteal fossa: primary afferent activity and trans-synaptically evoked activity. The dorsal column postsynaptic (DCPS) fibres represented 9.3% of the total population of fibres studied in the fasciculus gracilis and 14.5% of those with receptors in the skin. They were found to lie between the primary fibres of cutaneous and those of deep origin. The fastest fibres of the alpha range contributed to their activation and it is likely that C fibres contributed as well. 87% of the DCPS fibres studied at Th 12 were antidromically activated from the first cervical segment, and their conduction velocities measured between cervical and thoracic levels ranged from 16 to 71 m/sec.

    Notes: Summary The present report confirms that L1210 leukemia can be prevented by administration — in saline — of “interphase material” (IPM) which is a composite preparation extracted from nonpathogenic mycobacteria, such as M. smegmatis. IPM was more active than the different BCG cell wall preparations tested under the same conditions (i.e., in saline). The activity of the cord factor, which could be present in IPM, was evaluated in comparison. Since this chemically well-defined fraction (6–6′ dimycolate of trehalose) is insoluble in water, it was injected in an emulsion of mineral or vegetable oil. Cord factor administered alone in Bayol F showed a marked antitumor activity against this systemic, syngeneic murine leukemia. Moreover, this protection could also be demonstrated in an emulsion of saline and a metabolizable oil.

    Notes: Summary The study of the solution of the mass balance equation for a chromatographic column is presented. A numerical solution is proposed for a parabolic adsorption isotherm with high curvature. A numerical solution, based on calculations of derivatives from data at discrete intervals, has also been developed for the general form of the adsorption isotherm. The influence of isotherm curvature and of the mass transfer coefficient on the form of chromatographic peaks is then shown.

    Notes: Summary Crown gall tumors incited by Agrobacterium tumefaciens synthesize basic amino acid derivatives called opines. Opine production in tumours and opine catabolism by A. tumefaciens are coded by Ti-plasmids which confer oncogenicity on this bacterium. Catabolism of opines is inducible, and a method for isolation of regulatory mutants is described. From octopine-type bacteria, by plating on non-inducing substrates (noroctopine, noroctopine acid, D-histopine) we have isolated regulatory mutants of three types: constitutive, partially constitutive, and fully inducible by the analogue. From nopaline-type bacteria, by plating on octopine (a non inducing substrate) we have isolated analogous regulatory mutants. Synthetic opines, in which the amino acid moiety has been replaced by toxic arginine analogues, are toxic for these regulatory mutants. We isolated mutants resistant to such synthetic opines, and found that some had lost the capacity to utilize octopine. A survey of a large number of such mutants revealed that all of them still incited octopine synthetizing tumors. Mutants constitutive for octopine catabolism are in some instances also constitutive for Ti-plasmid transfer. A simple method for screening regulatory mutants for constitutive Ti-plasmid transfer is described.

    Notes: Summary The infection of E. coli cells with different lambdoïd prophages triggers a stimulation of galactokinase synthesis when cells are grown in a medium giving rise to a mild catabolite repression (tryptone broth) with an inducer of the gal operon (fucose). These results show that during phage infection (or induction) some factor acting in trans is produced which is able to overcome efficiently catabolite repression of the kinase cistron. Using different strains of λpbio252 (Pam, Qam, δH1), λpbio256H1 and λNNS7 we have concluded that the factor is the N gene product which is known for its anti- ϱ (rho) action. Studies of the whole gal operon in the same conditions show that epimerase unlike transferase and galactokinase is practically insensitive to catabolite repression by tryptone broth and that viral development has a low effect on it. This indicates that there is an internal modulation of gal operon expression. A mRNA termination site sensitive to the ϱ factor is known in the gal operon between galE and galT. Another site weaker than this one might exist between galE and operator-promoter region.
