Notes: Summary ICR-JCL strain mice were injected subcutaneously with 30 mg/kg body weight of cytosine arabinoside at 2, 3, and 4 days of age. This chemical prevented the production of the basket cells, stellate cells, and granule cells in the external granular layer of the cerebellum. Decrease in number of these microneurons affected the normal synaptic connections between the Purkinje cells and the microneurons, thus causing the disarrangement and abnormal arborization of the Purkinje cells. Of the three types of microneurons, the basket and a few stellate cells played a more important role in the disarrangement of the Purkinje cells and abnormal arborization of their primary dendrites than the granule cells did. Abnormal outgrowing directions of other smooth dendrites of the Purkinje cells were caused mainly by the diminution of stellate cells. Although parallel fibers were grossly decreased in number in the treated cerebellums, spines of the spiny dendrites of the Purkinje cells sprouted considerably in the 15-day-old mice, and then their morphological features remained even after 100 days of age.

Notes: Summary The administration of phenobarbital and endotoxin altered the toxicity and metabolism of 6-mercaptopurine in mice. These results indicate that the effects of 6-mercaptopurine may be modified by the activity of the drug-metabolizing enzyme.

Notes: Summary Comparative neuroradiologic studies of the posterior longitudinal spinal ligament were performed in 15 cases showing myelopathy. On visualizing the ossified foci CT scan was found to be superior to the conventional roentgenograms, and detailed evaluation of the constricted spinal canal with related neurologic deficits became possible. CT analysis must be performed to differentiate spondylotic myelopathy, which is essential when considering operative intervention. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A2404071 00040

Notes: Abstract Histochemical studies on catecholaminergic cells were conducted with the carp (Cyprinus carpio) retina. Catecholamine (CA)-containing cell bodies appear sparsely distributed among amacrine cells in the innermost cellular row of the inner nuclear layer (INL) and occasionally in the outer half part of the inner plexiform layer (IPL); only exceptionally are they found among ganglion cells. The fluorescent cells interspersed with the amacrine cells and in the IPL send their fiber processes toward both the outer plexiform layer (OPL) and the IPL; the fine fibers form dense networks in the INL and IPL. Pretreatment of the fish with intramuscular injection of reserpine (20 hr prior to enucleation) completely depleted CA from the retina. The fluorescence of catecholaminergic cells was enhanced, and the number of fluorescent cells visible was increased, by intravitreous injection ofl-DOPA, DA, and NA (3 hr prior to enucleation). A combination of pretreatment with intramuscular reserpine and intravitreous NA was particularly effective. These results indicate that catecholamines may play an important role in the modulation of the membrane potential of horizontal cells.

Notes: The chemical shift of V Kβ1, 3 and width of V Kα1 were measured with a two crystal X-Ray spectrometer. It was found that V Kβ1, 3 shift and V Kα1width can be utilized for identification of the vanadium oxidation state. Applications to vanadium containing catalysts and several perovskite structure compounds are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Electrochemical studies of the CdS film deposited onto a transparent conductive SnO2-coated glass slide by chemical spray deposition were performed in aqueous polysulphide solutions and the output characteristics of the electrochemical photocell (sprayed CdS film/polysulphide electrolyte/Pt) were measured. It was proved to be possible to construct a regenerative photocell free from the light losses through the polysulphide solution path by illuminating the CdS film anode through the SnO2-coated glass. Quantum yield and the maximum energy conversion efficiency of this photocell for monochromatic excitation of 480 nm were about 8% and 0.5%, respectively. It is concluded that the poorer quantum yield of this photocell employing CdS film than that of a photocell employing single crystal CdS can be attributed to the existence of lattice imperfections in the film.
