    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die von Birdsong u. Rashad (1972) aufgestellte Behauptung, daß die sechsten Kinder koreanischer Familien signifikant mehr echte Fingerbeerenwirbel als die älteren Geschwister aufweisen, wird an Hand eines deutschen Befundmaterials von 43 Familien mit je 5 oder mehr Kindern varianzanalytisch geprüft, auch über die Zehenbeerenmuster. Unsere Untersuchungen kommen zu einem anderen Ergebnis: Die Anzahl der digitalen Wirbel steigt in unseren Familien mit zunehmender Geschwisterzahl statistisch nicht an, sondern sie bleibt innerhalb der familiären Erblichkeit ganz zufällig. Als erbbiologisch wichtig erscheint es, daß der Informationswert des Merkmals Wirbelanzahl durch die Geschwisteranzahl und-reihenfolge nach unseren Analysen offenbar nicht spezifizierend verwendet zu werden braucht. Wir glauben nicht, daß es auf Grund von weiteren Untersuchungen, auch nicht durch Untersuchungen an einem rassisch sehr andersartigen Befundmaterial, doch noch zu einer Bestätigung der eingangs zitierten Hypothese kommen wird. Vorläufig betrachtet gibt es auch keinen Anhaltspunkt dafür, daß das Gebäralter der Mutter die Wirbelanzahl der Kinder beeinflußt.
    Notes: Summary It was stated by Birdsong and Rashad (1972) that the child of birth order number six of Korean families has significantly more true whorls on the finger tips than older brothers and sisters. To verify this assertion we studied a sample of all members of 43 normal German families with 5 or more legitimate children. The findings of the epidermal finger pattern types and those of the toe patterns were analysed. Results indicate a different conclusion regarding the number of digital whorls which were not increased statistically with increasing number of sibs. The number of whorls were randomly distributed within the heritable range of variability of the particular family. It appears of importance that, due to our analyses, the value of information of the characteristic “number of whorls” is not reduced and does not require a specific consideration regarding birth order. Furthermore, it can be stated preliminarly that there is no hint pointing to an influence of the maternal age on the number of whorls in their offspring.

    Notes: Summary The tongues of two patients with macroglossia were examined at autopsy. One of the patients had acromegaly and the other had hypothyroidism. To evaluate the size of the enlarged tongues, the average weight of the tongue in the human adult was determined first in a series of 20 unselected autopsies, 10 males and 10 females (ages 44 to 85). The weight of the tongue was greater in males than in females and was directly correlated with the height of the subject. Cachexia had relatively little effect on the weight. In acromegaly (case 21) and myxedema (case 22) the tongue was enlarged by at least 50%. Histopathology showed enlargement of muscle fibers especially anteriorly in acromegaly and hypothyroidism, thickening of the epithelium and increased subepithelial and interstitial connective tissue. Incidental findings included venous thrombi and telangiectasia in the subepithelial connective tissue in both hypothyroidism and acromegaly and a corpus amylaceum and two islands of hyaline cartilage in the tongue of hypothyroidism.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In vitro konnte gezeigt werden, daß inaktiviertes Maul- und Klauenseuchevirus (MKSV) bei einer NaCl-Konzentration von 0,1–0,15 mol nicht an DEAE-D/Kieselgur-Säulen adsorbiert wurde. Da derartige NaCl-Konzentrationen in DEAE-D/MKSV-Vakzinen und im Tierkörper vorhanden sind, dürfte die Adsorption von Virusantigen an DEAE-D nicht für dessen Adjuvanseffekt verantwortlich sein. Bei Schweinen ist an Hand des Auftretens von neutralisierenden Antikörpern und des Schutzes gegenüber Testinfektion nachgewiesen worden, daß DEAE-D seine optimale Adjuvanswirkung entfaltet, wenn es zusammen mit inaktiviertem MKSV als Vakzine injiziert wird. Daneben trat jedoch eine gute Adjuvanswirkung (75–100%ige Gruppenimmunität) bei etwa der Hälfte und eine mittlere Adjuvanswirkung (50–70%ige Gruppenimmunität) bei etwa einem Viertel der Impflinge auch dann auf, wenn DEAE-D örtlich und zeitlich vom inaktivierten Virus getrennt appliziert wurde. Dabei scheint es gleichgültig zu sein, ob DEAE-D oder inaktiviertes Virus zuerst gegeben wurde, jedoch war offensichtlich ein Zeitraum von 48 Stunden bzw. 4 Tagen zwischen beiden Injektionen günstiger als ein solcher von 24 Stunden. Hinsichtlich der Bildung von neutralisierenden Antikörpern ist die Situation mit jener bei der Immunität vergleichbar. Die einzige Abweichung besteht darin, daß ein Zeitraum von 24 Stunden zwischen der Applikation von DEAE-D und inaktiviertem Virus bzw. umgekehrt ebenso wirksam war als ein solcher von 48 Stunden bzw. 4 Tagen. Die Ergebnisse werden im Hinblick auf den möglichen Mechanismus des Adjuvanseffektes von DEAE-D auf zellulärer Ebene diskutiert.
    Notes: Summary In vitro it was shown that adsorption of inactivated FMDV onto DEAE-D kieselgur columns did not occur in the presence of 0.1–0.15m NaCl. These NaCl concentrations are present in DEAE-D/FMDV vaccines and in the tissues of animals. Therefore, adsorption of virus antigen does not appear to be responsible for the adjuvant effect of DEAE-D. In pigs it was demonstrated that DEAE-D exerts its optimal adjuvant effect, as measured by the formation of neutralizing antibodies and protection against challenge infection, when injected together with inactivated FMDV as vaccine. Apart from this, a good adjuvant effect (group immunity 75–100 per cent) was evoked in about one half and a moderate effect (group immunity 50–70 per cent) in about a quarter of the inoculated animals even if DEAE-D was separately injected locally and temporally from the inactivated virus. With regard to immunity it apparently does not matter whether DEAE-D or inactivated virus was given first, but an interval of 48 hours or 4 days between injection seemed to be more favourable than one of 24 hours. With regard to the formation of neutralizing antibodies the situation is comparable to that of immunity with the exception that a time interval of 24 hours between the application of DEAE-D and inactivated virus or vice versa was as good as that of 48 hours or 4 days. The results are discussed in regard to the possible mechanism of the adjuvant effect of DEAE-D on the cellular level.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The statistical relationship between the titers of neutralizing antibodies and the immunity of 706 pigs vaccinated against FMD was studied. This was done for each of four virus strains separately. Whereas no correlation between both test systems could be detected in case of the strains A5 Westerwald, C Detmold and O1Santander, a significant correlation was ascertained for the strain O1Kaufbeuren. Because of the different findings depending on the virus strain under study it was concluded that the antibody titer alone does not provide a useful measure for potency testing of FMD-vaccines for pigs.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Titer der neutralisierenden Antikörper im Serum und der Immunstatus von 706 gegen die MKS vakzinierten Schweinen wurden, aufgeschlüsselt in die zur Vakzineproduktion verwendeten vier Virusstämme, statistisch in Beziehung gebracht. Dabei bestand bei den Virusstämmen A5W, CD und O1S keine Korrelation zwischen der Höhe der Neutralisationstiter und dem Prozentsatz an geschützten Tieren. Für den Stamm O1K wurde jedoch eine Korrelation zwischen der Höhe der Antikörpertiter und dem Prozentsatz der geschützten Tiere gefunden. Wegen der unterschiedlichen Befunde bei den einzelnen Virusstämmen wird die Bestimmung der Antikörpertiter allein zur Wirksamkeitsprüfung von MKS-Schweinevakzinen als nicht geeignet erachtet.

    Notes: Summary Neutralizing antibodies against ADV were transmitted from sows, vaccinated with inactivated ADV adjuvanted with DEAE dextran, to their offspring via colostrum. The suckling piglets were protected by colostral immunity against contact infection with ADV at week 1 p.p., however, they were not protected against i.n. infection (108 TCD50). At 2 and 3 weeks p.p. all the piglets were protected against both contact infection and i.n. infection. At 4 weeks p.p. 50 per cent of the litter were protected against i.n. infection, in spite of very low antibody titres (1:2–1:4). The colostral antibodies did not interfere with active antibody response when the piglets were vaccinated with the inactivated vaccine from 2 weeks p.p. onward. Lymphocytes from suckling piglets of a vaccinated sow showedin vitro reactivity (enhanced3H-thymidine incorporation) against ADV and BHK antigen, both contained in the vaccine used for the immunization of the sow.

    Notes: Summary The appearence of cell-mediated immunity was studied in Aujeszky diseased pigs with the aid of thein vitro stimulation of sensitized lymphocytes. The first cell-mediated immunity reaction of lymphocytes occurred 4 days after infection. From day 7 to 35, the latest day tested, the reactions were most marked with lymphocytes from lymph nodes and spleen, whereas blood and thymus lymphocytes reacted less frequently; bone marrow lymphocytes showed no response. Reinfection did not considerably enhance lymphocyte reactivity. Humoral immunity was demonstrated a few days later than cell-mediated immunity. Neutralizing antibodies were first detected at day 7, reaching optimal titers at day 14. Complement fixing antibodies were detected from day 14 onward. Reinfection caused a very weak booster effect only on neutralizing antibody production. The sensitivity of the neutralization test could be enhanced up to sixfold by the addition of fresh guinea pig complement. It is concluded that cell-mediated immunity influences the early stage of infection with Aujeszky disease virus when humoral immunity is not yet demonstrable or yet rather low. Lymph nodes and spleen are apparently of special importance for the appearance of ADV-reactive lymphocytes.

    Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of dilithiumzine orthogermanate, Li2ZnGeO4, has been determined and refined byFourier syntheses and least-squares, using three dimensional single-crystal data. A finalR-value of 5.7% was obtained. The monoclinic unit cell (Pn−Cs 2) with the dimensionsa=6.40,b=5.45,c=5.04 Å and β=90.2° contains two formula units Li2ZnGeO4. The crystal structure is built up by [GeO4] tetrahedra, which are linked together by [LiO4] and [ZnO4] tetrahedra. The average interatomic distances are found to be: Ge−O=1.77, Li−O=2.01 and Zn−O=1.93 Å.

    Notes: Summary The effect of three different types of mutations in ribosomal protein S5 of Escherichia coli on translational fidelity has been studied. Two of them, namely that conferring resistance to spectinomycin and that selected for partial suppression of a temperaturesensitive alanyl-tRNA synthetase mutation, do not exhibit ribosomal ambiguity in the in vivo and in vitro test system employed. In constrast, mutations in ribosomal protein S5 selected for suppression of streptomycin dependence mutations are able to derestrict the restriction of translational ambiguity imposed by strA mutations, though to different degrees depending on the type of mutation. Mutants in which streptomycin dependence is suppressed by an alteration in protein S5 are more restrictive than mutants resistant to streptomycin. Again, the extent of restriction depends on the type of the strA d allele. In conclusion: mutations in ribosomal protein S5 can act as ram mutations like mutations in protein S4. The part of the S5 polypeptide involved in control of translational fidelity is different from regions altered in spectinomycin resistant strains and in the alanyl-tRNA synthetase suppressor mutant.
