    Notes: Abstract A small-parameter method in which the gas and electron temperatures can be different is used to solve the Boltzmann equation. The zeroth-approximation solutions are Maxwellian with different temperatures Te and Ts. Transition to the BGK formalism on the basis of an extremely crude estimate of the frequency of electron collisions leads to numerical results which agree well with the available data. Then an extension of the Eucken method leads to analytic expressions for the nonequilibrium quasi-Lorentz transport coefficients.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les pinéalocytes de la Couleuvre sont constitués d'un corps cellulaire et d'expansions à polarité vasculaire. Ces cellules présentent toutes les caractéristiques des cellules glandulaires. La présence de cellules claires et de cellules sombres ne permet pas de classer les pinéalocytes en deux types cellulaires distincts. Les grains de sécrétion apparaissent dans les vésicules golgiennes, migrent dans les expansions et s'accumulent dans les parties terminales périvasculaires. De nombreuses fibres sympathiques sillonnent les espaces et le parenchyme épiphysaire. Une relation entre l'épiphyse et le système nerveux central n'a pu être établie. Les terminaisons sympathiques renferment en nombre variable des grosses vésicules à coeur dense et des petites vésicules granulaires et agranulaires de même taille. Des terminaisons sont observées au contact des pinéalocytes mais aucune articulation synaptique n'existe à ce niveau. La présence de barrettes entourées de vésicules est le seul critère qui permet de faire un rapprochement entre les pinéalocytes de la Couleuvre et la cellule photoréceptrice épiphysaire de certains Lacertiliens. L'épiphyse des Ophidiens présente une remarquable convergence avec celle des Mammifères. L'origine, la migration et la sécrétion des grains denses des pinéalocytes établissent un certain parallélisme avec les granules élémentaires des cellules neurosécrétrices.
    Notes: Summary Pinealocytes in the snake consist of a cellular body and processes with secretory polarity. These cells show all the characteristics of glandular cells. Although cells of variable densities of their cytoplasm are present at the same time, it is not possible to define separate cell types. The secretory granules appear in Golgi vesicles, move into cell processes and accumulate in their perivascular endings. Numerous sympathetic fibers are found in the vascular spaces as well as in the epiphyseal parenchyma. No structural connexions between the pineal organ and the central nervous system could be shown. Sympathetic nerve endings contain large dense-core vesicles and other small granular and non-granular vesicles. Nerve endings are observed in direct contact with the pinealocytes, but no synaptic junctions have been observed. The presence of some synpatic ribbons surrounded by vesicles is the only criterion permitting comparison of the pinealocytes of the snake with the pineal photoreceptors of some lacertilians. The pineal gland of snakes shows a remarkable structural resemblance with that of mammals. The origin, migration, and secretion of the pinealocyte secretory granules in Tropidonotus natrix show some similarities with the elaboration of elementary granules by neurosecretory cells.

    Description / Table of Contents: Eésumé. Une méthode d'étude du débit sanguin musculaire au cours même de l'exercice est décrite. Elle est basée sur la mesure de la disparition d'un traceur radioactif (Xénon 133) injecté au sein du tissu. La vascularisation du quadriceps est étudiée pendant des exercices à plusieurs intensités, sur bicyclette ergométrique. Le débit sanguin musculaire s'accroît proportionnellement à l'intensité de l'exercice. Pour 100 g de muscle, le débit sanguin passe de 13,3 à 39,1 ml/min lorsque la puissance de l'effort fourni est accrue de 50 à 250 watts. La reproductibilité d'une même mesure est satisfaisante: le coefficient de variation de 5 mesures répétées vaut 10 à 17%. Les causes d'erreurs de cette technique sont discutées; ses avantages sont mis en évidence.
    Notes: Summary A method for the measurement of the muscular blood flow during rhythmic exercise is presented. An external counter follows the clearance rate of a radioactif tracer (Xenon 133) injected into the tissu. The circulation in the quadriceps was measured for several workloads on a bicycle ergometer. It was found that the muscular blood flow increased proportionately to the intensity of muscular work. For 100 g of muscle, the blood flow rose from 13.3 to 39.1 ml/min when the workload increased from 50 to 250 watts. The reproductibility for the test was satisfactory; the coefficient of variation for 5 similar measures reached 10 to 17%. The causes of error from such a technique were discussed as well as the advantages.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé La comparaison des valeurs de consommation d'O2, de ventilation et de fréquence cardiaque lors d'épreuves d'intensité progressive par échelons et durées variables est réalisée chez 14 adultes normaux, de sexe masculin. Aucune différence statistiquement significative n'apparaît entre les valeurs maximum quel que soit le profil de l'épreuve et les résultats sont comparables exception faite de la fréquence cardiaque maximum plus faible, lorsque la durée de l'épreuve est réduite. Pour des raisons méthodologiques et pratiques, l'épreuve en paliers de 2 mn et échelons de 2 km/h paraît préférable.
    Notes: Summary The comparison between the values of O2 intake, ventilation and heart rate obtained during tests of progressive intensity with variable degrees and duration is performed by 14 normal male adults. No statistically significant difference appears between the maximal values whatever the profile of the test may be and the results are comparable except for a lower maximal heart rate, when the duration of the test is reduced. From methodological and practical point of view, the level run of 2 min and with degrees of 2 km/h seems to be more advisable.

L'ingestion de 80 mg de propranolol entraîne une diminution significative de la fréquence cardiaque à tous les niveaux métaboliques avec d'importantes variations individuelles. Cette modification circulatoire réduit la tolérance à l'exercice musculaire et fait baisser la consommation maximum d'O2, en moyenne de 15,5%.
    Notes: Summary The effect of Beta-adrenergic blockade on the circulatory response has been verified during muscular exercise on 7 healthy young men. The administration of 80 mg propranolol induced a significant decrease in cardiac frequency to each metabolic level, however, with an important individual variation. This modification of the circulation reduces the tolerance to muscular exercise and the maximum oxygen consumption (mean: 15.5%).

    Notes: Abstract Physiological reactions during exercise were tested under hyperoxic and hyperbaric conditions. In 6 subjects walking and running at increasing speeds on a treadmill, maximum performance showed little change when the respired air was enriched with O2. Maximum metabolism, measured by CO2 production, increased by 3.2%. During exercise on a bicycle ergometer, maximum O2 uptake increased by 3% in 5 subjects breathing pure O2 at 1 ATA. During hyperoxia the maximum O2 consumption measured at 2 and 3 ATA did not differ significantly from that measured at 1 ATA. Heart rate showed highly comparable maximum values under the various experimental conditions. During submaximal exercise, heart rate was consistently lower when the subjects breathed O2. The O2-linked difference became slighter with every increase in work load. Under hyperbaric and hyperoxic conditions, ventilation was invariably reduced during exercise.
