    Notes: Abstract The harmonic oscillator shell model with LS-coupling is studied from a group-theoretical point of view. Leaving aside for the moment the spin and isospin degrees of freedom the most general transformation group, which leaves the hamiltonian invariant, is determined to be the unitary group in3 A dimensions ( $$\left( {\mathfrak{U}_{3A} } \right)$$ ), whereA is the nucleon number. The following chain of subgroups is considered: $$\mathfrak{U}_{3A} 〉 \mathfrak{U}_3 \times \mathfrak{U}_A 〉 \mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} \times \mathfrak{U}_A 〉 \mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} \times \mathfrak{S}_A .$$ ( $$\mathfrak{U}_3 $$ resp. $$\mathfrak{U}_A $$ unitary group in 3 resp.A dimensions, × means direct product, $$\mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} $$ rotation group in 3 dimensions, $$\mathfrak{S}_A $$ group of all permutations of theA nucleons). The classification of the wavefunctions with respect to energy is equivalent to a classification according to irreducible representations of $$\mathfrak{U}_{3A} $$ . Therefore we can classify the wavefunctions in each energy level with respect to irreducible representations of $$\mathfrak{U}_3 , \mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} $$ and $$\mathfrak{S}_A $$ by studying the laws of decomposition of the irreducible representations of $$\mathfrak{U}_{3A} $$ into those of the subgroups. Such a classification is of physical importance in connection with the Elliot model. The last step going from $$\mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} \times \mathfrak{U}_A to \mathfrak{D}_3^{( + )} \times \mathfrak{S}_A $$ leads in a natural way to the problem of center-of-mass motion and one obtaines a clear separation of the totality of wave-functions into “good” states and “spurious” states. The most appropriate mathematical tool to deal with this question is the theory of “inner plethysm”.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Spin- und Isospinfunktionen eines Systems vonN Nukleonen werden betrachtet und in Supermultipletts eingeteilt, d.h. in Klassen von Funktionen mit den gleichen Symmetrieeigenschaften bei Permutationen derN Nukleonen. Es wird eine einfache, aber ganz allgemeine Formel hergeleitet, aus welcher man ohne jede Zwischenrechnung sofort ablesen kann, welche Kombinationen (S, T) von GesamtspinS und GesamtisospinT in einem Supermultiplett mit vorgegebener Permutationssymmetrie zulässig sind. Die Herleitung der Formel bedient sich gruppentheoretischer Methoden, die Anwendung ist jedoch völlig elementar und erfordert im wesentlichen nur das explizite Niederschreiben des Resultats.

    Notes: Abstract In a previous paper a grouptheoretical scheme for the classification of wavefunctions has been developed from a consideration of the group of all transformations, which leave the nuclear hamiltonian invariant thereby taking into account also accidental degeneracies. This scheme is applied here to a translation-invariant hamiltonian with harmonic oscillator forces. The existence of a shell structure for the ground states is proved and the quantum numbers and symmetry properties of the wavefunctions of the ground states and of some excited states are derived. If translation-invariance is neglected, spurious states appear. It is shown how their quantum numbers and symmetry properties can be determined. Some remarks on a translation-invariant formulation of the Elliot-model conclude the paper.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung An Hand kombinierter Untersuchungen von 131 Staphylokokkenstämmen aus einer Entbindungsklinik mit Hilfe des Antiobigramms, biochemischer Teste und der Ermittlung der serologischen Formel wurde eindeutig herausgestellt, daß keine der Methoden für sich allein in der Ermittlung des Hauskeimes befriedigende Ergebnisse bringt. Zwar kommt die alleinige Anwendung der Serotypisierung den erwarteten Resultaten am nächsten, jedoch gibt es auch hier Versager. Die Aufwendigkeit der Serologie erfordert eine Vorauswahl des Stammaterials. Diese kommt bei Kombination von Antibiogramm und biochemischen Testen den gestellten Anforderungen am nächsten. Die Serologie ist dann in der Lage, die exakte Diagnose zu stellen, und nur in Einzelfällen wird die Lysotypie noch zur Klärung unsicherer Befunde mit heranzuziehen sein.
