Notes: In the Becchi–Rouet–Stora–Tyutin (BRST) quantization of gauge theories, the zero locus ZQ of the BRST differential Q carries an (anti)bracket whose parity is opposite to that of the fundamental bracket. Observables of the BRST theory are in a 1:1 correspondence with Casimir functions of the bracket on ZQ. For any constrained dynamical system with the phase space N0 and the constraint surface Σ, we prove its equivalence to the constrained system on the BFV-extended phase space with the constraint surface given by ZQ. Reduction to the zero locus of the differential gives rise to relations between bracket operations and differentials arising in different complexes (the Gerstenhaber, Schouten, Berezin–Kirillov, and Sklyanin brackets); the equation ensuring the existence of a nilpotent vector field on the reduced manifold can be the classical Yang–Baxter equation. We also generalize our constructions to the bi-QP manifolds which from the BRST theory viewpoint correspond to the BRST–anti-BRST-symmetric quantization. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Heating and evaporation in the liquid meniscus during the cone-jet mode of electrospraying have been investigated. An expression for the ratio between emitted and evaporated liquid volumes has been developed and verified by experiment. This work indicates how the emitted liquid yield can be increased. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Silicon refractive planar parabolic lenses with minimized absorption were fabricated by a combination of photolithography and dry-etching techniques. Focusing and spectral properties of the lenses were studied with synchrotron radiation in the energy range 8–25 keV at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. A focal spot of 1.8 μm with a gain of 18.5 and transmission of more then 80% was measured at 15.6 keV. The spectral characteristics were analyzed taking into account material dispersion and photon-energy attenuation in the hard x-ray range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A particularly simple model belonging to a wide class of coupled maps which obey a local conservation law is studied. The phase structure of the system and the types of the phase transitions are determined. It is argued that the structure of the phase diagram is robust with respect to mild violations of the conservation law. Critical exponents possibly determining a new universality class are calculated for a set of independent order parameters. Numerical evidence is produced suggesting that the singularity in the density of Lyapunov exponents at λ=0 is a reflection of the singularity in the density of Fourier modes (a "Van Hove" singularity) and disappears if the conservation law is broken. Applicability of the Lyapunov dimension to the description of spatiotemporal chaos in a system with a conservation law is discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This study seeks to determine the origin of several features observed in the behavior at high j values of shift cross sections in the 0-0 and 0-1 bands of HF in a bath of argon. These features were not explained in earlier quantum mechanical calculations. A semi-classical (classical path) simplified formalism is used to demonstrate that shift cross sections depend sensitively on vibration-rotation coupling in the high j limit. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We study the geometry of the Lagrangian Batalin–Vilkovisky (BV) theory on an antisymplectic manifold. We show that gauge symmetries of the BV theory are essentially the symmetries of an even symplectic structure on the stationary surface of the master action. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
