Description: A key challenge in the fabrication of ferromagnetically filled carbon nano-onions (CNOs) is the control of their thickness, dimensions and electric properties. Up to now literature works have mainly focused on the encapsulation of different types of ferromagnetic materials including α-Fe, Fe 3 C, Co, FeCo, FePd 3 and others within CNOs. However, no report has yet shown a suitable method for controlling both the number of shells, diameter and electric properties of the produced CNOs. Here, we demonstrate an advanced chemical vapour deposition approach in which the use of small quantities of sulfur during the pyrolysis of ferrocene allows for the control of (i) the diameter of the CNOs, (ii) the number of shells and (iii) the electric properties. We demonstrate the morphological, structural, electric and magnetic properties of these new types of CNOs by using SEM, XRD, TEM, HRTEM, EIS and VSM techniques.

Description: A channel of nanometre size is an important platform for nanofluidic investigations. In this work, we show that a single solid nanopore can be generated by hydrogen fluoride etching of the outside wall of commercially available fused silica capillary. The geometry, size and the singleness were characterized by various means, including scanning electron microscope, electrolyte conductance measurement and a fluorescent microscope. The generation principle is also discussed. The nanopore thus generated features in low aspect ratio and exhibits typical nanofluidic effects such as ion concentration polarization, rectification and molecular translocation.

Description: The performances and microstructure of long glass fibre-reinforced polyamide 10T (PA10T/LGF) composites that experienced different ageing temperatures (160 and 200°C) with increasing ageing time are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy to probe the correlation between properties of the composites and thermo-oxidative ageing. The DSC results show that PA10T/LGF composites occur on degradation, the fracture of molecular chains and the destruction of crystallization structure, which leads to the crystallization and melting peaks of PA10T/LGF composites to shift to high temperature. On the basis of dynamic mechanical analysis data, the reduction of the interfacial bonding between the glass fibre and PA10T matrix and the motion of molecular chain segments result in the thermo-oxidative ageing of composites. According to the calculation of activation energy ( E ), thermo-oxidative temperature and ageing time can bring about the decline of the E value, proving the deterioration in performance of PA10T/LGF composites. In view of TGA, the increase in the thermo-oxidative temperature and ageing time promotes the degradation of PA10T/LGF composites. The tensile, flexural and notched impact strengths of PA10T/LGF composites decline with prolonging the ageing temperature and time. The surface of materials produces some microcracks and the cross-section surface of PA10T/LGF composites becomes rougher.

Description: Titanium (Ti) is an ideal bone substitute due to its superior bio-compatibility and remarkable corrosion resistance. However, in order to improve the osteoconduction and osteoinduction capacities in clinical applications, different kinds of surface modifications are typically applied to Ti alloys. In this study, we fabricated a tightly attached polydopamine-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle coating on Ti with magnetic properties, aiming to improve the osteogenesis of the Ti substrates. The PDA-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and water contact angle measurements. The cell attachment and proliferation rate of the human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) on the Ti surface significantly improved with the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA coating when compared with the pure Ti without a coating. Furthermore, the results of in vitro alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity at 7 and 14 days and alizarin red S staining at 14 days showed that the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA coating on Ti promoted the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Moreover, hBMSCs co-cultured with the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA-coated Ti for approximately 14 days also exhibited a significantly higher mRNA expression level of ALP, osteocalcin and runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2). Our in vitro results revealed that the present PDA-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle surface coating is an innovative method for Ti surface modification and shows great potential for clinical applications.

Description: Xerophytes play an active role in preventing soil denudation and desertification in arid and semi-arid areas. Peganum harmala L. (Zygophyllaceae family), a seasonally growing, poisonous and drought-tolerant plant, is widely distributed in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and used as a traditional herbal medicine as well as, in winter, a fodder source. Previous research has focused on the pharmacological activity of isolated compounds and stress responses to growth environments. However, the metabolic profile of P. harmala and variations in its metabolites, including medicinally active and stress resistance components, have not been illustrated during different growth stages. Here, we collected plant samples in May, August, October and December. We determined the metabolic composition of methanol extracts using NMR spectroscopy, and comparisons of four growth stages were accomplished by applying statistical analysis. The results showed that vasicine, choline and sucrose were significantly elevated in samples harvested in May. Significantly higher amounts of betaine, lysine, 4-hydroxyisoleucine and proline were found in samples collected in August than in samples collected in other months, and the concentrations of phosphorylcholine, glucose, acetic acid and vasicinone were highest in December. The relationships between differential biomarkers and plant physiological states affected by diverse growth environmental factors were discussed. Our result deepened the understanding of metabolic mechanisms in plant development and confirmed the advantage of using NMR-based metabolomic treatments in quality evaluation when P. harmala is used for different purposes.

Description: The objectives of this study were to remove heavy metals from wastewater through the biosorption method with modified biomass as an effective sorbent and to prepare metal/biomass composites with the same modified biomass as a direct template. Eggshell membrane (ESM) was selected and modified to adsorb heavy metals. Adsorption of metal ions on the modified ESM (MESM) might be attributed to electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and coordination effect with chelating ligands containing N and S on the surface of the MESM. The pH of the solution was a key factor affecting the adsorption. The Cu–Ag/MESM composites with uniform Cu–Ag NPs were prepared with MESM as matrices, and with Cu 2+ and Ag + adsorbed as metal sources. The Cu–Ag/MESM showed excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in the aqueous phase. Because of the high stability of the Cu–Ag NPs supported on the macro-dimension supporter, Cu–Ag/MESM can be easily separated after the catalytic reaction and recycled.
