Notes: Abstract. Persistent organochlorine residues such as hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), chlorocyclodienes, and the DDT group (DDTs) were determined in fat and muscle samples of resident red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) hunted in Spain. Chlorinated contamination pattern varied largely depending on geographical distribution. Birds collected from the northern part of Spain contained greater concentrations of lindane (34.4 ng/g fat basis) than those from central or southern Spain. In contrast, red-legged partridges collected in southern locations exhibited elevated levels of p,p′-DDE (62.3 ng/g fat basis) as compared with central (31.2 ng/g fat basis) and northern areas (5.6 ng/g fat basis). The only cyclodiene detected, dieldrin, showed higher amounts (3.4 ng/g fat basis) in partridges collected in central Spain. The sex differences in pollutant occurrence and concentrations were negligible. One-year-old birds accumulated greater concentrations of β-HCH, and dieldrin than older birds. Global comparison of organochlorine concentrations indicated that northern partridges are more contaminated by compounds of industrial origin, whereas southern birds contained greater amounts of agricultural chemicals. Estimates of hazards associated with organochlorine levels in resident red-legged partridges in Spain suggested that southern birds may be at risk from exposure to DDTs, and northern birds may be affected by excessive concentrations of lindane. The use of red-legged partridge as bioindicator for OCP contamination is discussed.

Notes: Abstract: Direct mass measurements of neutron-deficient rare-earth isotopes in the vicinity of 146Gd were performed with the Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. This paper reports on the measurement of more than 40 isotopes of the elements praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, dysprosium and holmium, that have been measured with a typical accuracy of m 14 keV. An atomic mass evaluation has been performed taking into account other experimental mass values via a least-squares adjustment. The results of the adjustment are discussed.

Notes: ABSTRACT We report a case of juxtaposed Wilms' tumor (WT) and cystic nephroma (CN) in a 21-month-old girl which gave rise to radiological diagnostic difficulty. Preoperative chemotherapy was given, resulting in marked tumor necrosis but the cystic nephroma remained untouched. Histological examination showed characteristic features of a triphasic WT and a CN; the two lesions were separated by a thick fibrous capsule. While everybody agrees that WT and cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma (CPDN) are closely related, there are two opposite views about their relationship to CN. One is that CN may represent the final step in maturation of WT and CPDN. Other authors argue that there is no evidence to support this theory but believe CN might have something in common with nephrogenic rests. We suggest that the two lesions in the present case may have originated from two intralobar nephrogenic rests, which would strengthen the latter view.

Notes: Abstract A method is presented for ecological assessment of botanical sample data from a nature reserve network. The approach uses regional floristic survey data for a specific biotope as a context for spatial and temporal comparison. Assessments are based upon floristic similarity to reference vegetation types and indicator scores that summarise multivariate plant species data in relation to important environmental gradients. The approach was implemented as a software tool using floristic survey data for soligenous mires in a UK region. Plant community monitoring data were assessed against reference communities from this regional baseline to illustrate the potential advantages of the method. These include; (a) allowing links to be made between multivariate plant species data and measurements of environmental drivers, (b) providing realistic assessments of spatial and temporal differences because comparisons are against typical values of indicator scores for the region, (c) providing the scope for setting realistic criteria for vegetation monitoring.

Notes: Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to construct a set of Riemannian metrics on a manifold X with the property that will develop a pinching singularity in finite time when evolved by Ricci flow. More specifically, let , where N n is an arbitrary closed manifold of dimension n≥ 2 which admits an Einstein metric of positive curvature. We construct a (non-empty) set of warped product metrics on the non-compact manifold X such that if , then a smooth solution , t∈[0,T) to the Ricci flow equation exists for some maximal constant T, 0〈T〈∞, with initial value , and where K is some compact set .
