    Notes: Summary Fifteen vaccinia virus (VV) recombinants derived from VV strains Praha, LIVP and DD (i.e. Dryvax Wyeth vaccine - derived) and expressing genes for S, preS2-S or c antigens of hepatitis B virus (HBV) were tested in monkey CV-1 cells and human diploid LEP cells. The production of infectious virus was found to be alike in all the recombinants and parental viruses as well. However, several recombinants produced markedly lesser amounts of S and preS2 antigens in LEP cells than in CV-1 cells. This reduction was independent of the parental virus used. There was, however, a relationship between the production of preS2 in CV-1 cells and the production of S and preS2 antigens in LEP cells; in general, recombinants efficiently inducing preS2 antigen formation in CV-1 cells produced markedly reduced amounts of S and preS2 antigens in LEP cells. Reduction of HBV antigen production in LEP cells was not apparent in recombinants expressing only S or c antigens of HBV, and the production of c antigen by double recombinants was not influenced by simultaneous expression of preS2 and S. The various recombinants also differed in the ratio of S:preS2 antigen formation. This difference seemed to be associated with the length of the untranslated leader sequence preceding preS2 but not with the parental virus or cell type used. The titers of antibodies against S and preS2 antigens induced in mice immunized with different recombinants differed markedly. The differences in the ratio of S:preS2 antigen production in vitro were not reflected in vivo by S:preS2 antibody ratio.

    Notes: Abstract Measurement of blood pressure and heart rate in active orthostasis has proven to be effective in the diagnosis of autonomic regulatory dysfunctions. The following study was carried out in order to clarify to what extent reproducible heart rate reactions also occur in passive orthostasis. 61 people with normal results in five standardized tests were examined. All 61 test persons had individually differing courses of heart rate. After an initial increase of frequency an almost straight line results from a superimposed projection of the graphs. In 20 of these cases the tilt-table test was repeated in order to detect intra-individual regularities. Even when the test was repeated, no reproducible intra-individual heart rate reactions occured. And here as well, projection of the graphs produced an almost straight line. We could not find any quotient, such as the 30/15 ratio in active orthostasis, during our tests with the tilt-table.

    Notes: Summary This study investigates by electron microscopy the transformational process of the endosomal compartment of the Drosophila nephrocyte, the garland cell, which occurs during endocytotic processing of internalized material. The endosomal compartment of the garland cell consists of a prominent tubular/vacuolar complex in the cortical cytoplasm. When internalization of coated pits is blocked at 29°C using the endocytosis mutant, shibire ts, the tubules gradually disappear after 7 min at 29°C. By 12 min at 29°C, the vauoles also disappear. Thus, the endosomal compartment appears to constantly undergo a transformational process that necessitates continuous replenishment by coated vesicles. The data suggest that the tubular component of the endosomal compartment gradually transforms into vacuoles by the expansion of the tubular membrane. The vacuoles then transform by invaginating into themselves, creating flattened cisternae. The electron-lucent substance in the lumina of the vacuoles appears to be extruded into the cytoplasm through the invaginating membrane. No shuttle vehicles such as vesicles or tubules could be identified that might have been involved in the transporting of endocytosed materials and membrane from the endosomal compartment to lysosomes or back to the plasma membrane.

    Notes: Abstract The electrocatalytic properties of thin Co3O4 and NiCo2O4 films prepared on CdO-nonconductive glass by the method of chemical spray pyrolysis were investigated for oxygen evolution in varying KOH concentrations. The Tafel slopes were close to (2.3RT/F) V per decade for both oxides. The reaction order with respect to [OH−] was found to be approximately 1.3. It was observed that Co3O4 is more active than NiCo2O4 towards oxygen evolution. A mechanism for oxygen evolution involving the electrochemical adsorption of OH− as a fast step and the electrochemical desorption of OH forming an intermediate H2O2 as the rate-determining step has been suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Two sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were isolated from a mixed culture enriched with benzoate obtained from gut homogenate of the soil-feeding higher termite, Cubitermes speciosus. The organisms were vibrioid rods, staining Gram-negative, which performed incomplete substrate oxidation. They differed in several features. The smaller one, strain STp, was motile with a single polar flagellum. This strain differed from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans only by its inability to oxidize malate and pentanol. The bigger one, strain STg, differed from Desulfovibrio giganteus only by its nonmotility and a lower length. It is the first evidence of the presence of SRB in termite gut.
