Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. Total knee replacement has been carried out in the 4 knees of 2 patients for spontaneous bony ankylosis. Minimally constrained prostheses were used because the ligaments were usually intact and the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joint lines could be re-established. The approach and repair was by a V-Y quadricepsplasty. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Notes: Abstract In many applications, we need to find a minimum cost partition of a network separating a given pair of nodes. A classical example is the Max-Flow Min-Cut Theorem, where the cost of the partition is defined to be the sum of capacities of arcs connecting the two parts. Other similar concepts such as minimum weighted sparsest cut and flux cut have also been introduced. There is always a cost associated with a cut, and we always seek the min-cost cut separating a given pair of nodes. A natural generalization from the separation of a given pair is to find all minimum cost cuts separating all $$\left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} n \\ 2 \\ \end{array} } \right)$$ pairs of nodes, with arbitrary costs associated with all 2n−1 — 1 cuts. In the present paper, we show thatn — 1 minimum cost cuts are always sufficient to separate all $$\left( {\begin{array}{*{20}c} n \\ 2 \\ \end{array} } \right)$$ pairs of nodes. A further generalization is to considerk-way partitions rather than two-way partitions. An interesting relationship exists betweenk-way partitions, the multicommodity flow problem, and the minimum weighted sparsest cut. Namely, if the staturated arcs in a multicommodity flow problem form ak-way partition (k ≤ 4), then thek-way partition contains a two-way partition. This two-way partition is the minimum weight sparsest cut.

Notes: Abstract We consider the possibility of restoration and/or enhancement of decaying holograms in photorefractive media by using a simple optical readout in conjunction with a phase conjugator. The results indicate that extremely weak holograms can be enhanced provided that the two-beam coupling is sufficiently strong. Steady-state photorefractive holograms can be maintained continuously without decay by using a self-enhanced readout scheme. The results also provide an explanation for the formation of mutually pumped phase conjugation in terms of the amplification of an initial noise grating. The results are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract From 1984 to 1987, a complete, single-layered, porous-coated femoral component (Roy-Camille type) was used for primary cementless total hip replacement in 80 patients. Seventy-two patients (77 hips) with a minimal follow-up of 5 years (mean 7.2 years) were assessed clinically and radiographically. Thigh pain occurred in 4 hips. Osteolysis appeared in 5 hips. Cortical thinning around the femoral component was significant at the proximal and middle levels. In total, 6 femoral components failed, which led to reoperation due to aseptic loosening (4 hips) and septic loosening (2 hips). The hip rating score (modified d’Aubigne and Postel rating system) in the surviving hips progressed from 9.0 (range 6–10) preoperatively to 16.3 (range 12–18) points at the latest follow-up. From this study, we found that the complete, single-layered, porous-coated stem had a low loosening rate after 5 years. Bone ingrowth into the porous coating was found in most of the cases. A lower stress shielding effect in comparison with the complete, multi-layered, porous-coated prosthesis was also noted.

Notes: Summary Keratin debris is a constant feature in middle-ear cholesteatoma. Keratin prepared from rat skin induced a foreign-body granuloma in the subcutaneous space in the rat. In vitro this granuloma produced high levels of bone-resorbing factors: prostaglandin E2, osteoclast-activating factor, and leucine aminopeptidase. In the in vivo study, keratin-induced granuloma in the rat middle ear caused partial resorption of the cochlear wall. Macrophages, fibroblasts, and osteoclastlike cells were found at bone-resorption areas. These cells appeared to be responsible for bone resorption through production of prostaglandin E2, osteoclast-activating factor, and proteases.

Notes: Abstract. Affinity capillary electrophoresis is a new method for studies of biomolecular recognition. Applications reported in the literature include chiral separation of racemic biomolecules, measurement of binding constants, estimation of kinetic on- and off-rate constants, determination of binding stoichiometries (a useful tool in examining electrostatic interactions), estimation of effective charges and molecular weights of proteins, characterization of enzymatic activities and library screening for tight-binding drug candidates in solution. This technique demands only small amounts of sample (nanolitre injection volumes, picograms of proteins), involves no radiolabelled materials or chemically immobilized ligands, and does not require changes in spectroscopic characteristics upon binding. This paper reviews the most recent applications of affinity capillary electrophoresis and its use in the analysis of biomolecules.

Notes: Abstract. The methanol extract of the stem of Sinofranchetia chinensis inhibited the activity of xanthine oxidase in vitro. Bioassay-guided purification led to the isolation of liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin as the main xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This inhibition of enzyme activity was found to be dose dependent, with an IC50 value of approximately 49.3 μM for liquiritigenin and 55.8 μM for isoliquiritigenin. Lineweaver-Burk transformation of the inhibition data indicated that the inhibition was of a mixed type for both liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin. For liquiritigenin, the Ki and KI were determined to be 14.0 μM and 151.6 μM, respectively. For isoliquiritigenin, the Ki and KI were determined to be 17.4 μM and 81.9 μM, respectively. These results suggest that these natural products could be used to treat conditions where the inhibition of xanthine oxidase is warranted.

Notes: Summary Components from fasting human serum that could stimulate the forward migration of human spermatozoa were isolated by gel filtration on Sephadex G-25. The results suggest that these components may be used to enhance sperm forward migration and, hence, pregnancy rate in artificial insemination with husband's semen, (AIH) especially in cases where the sperm forward migration is not optimal.

Notes: Abstract A number of isoindolo[l ,2-b]quinazolines and some benzo[4,5]isoquinolino[l,2-b]quinazolines as structural modification analogues of the antitumor compound batracylin were synthesized and evaluated against HL-60 cell growth and in topoisomerase II-mediated DNA cleavage assays. Of the compounds studied, 10,12-dihydro-7,8-methy lenedioxyisoindolo[ 1,2-b] quinazolin-12(10H)-one (1d), 2-amino-10,12-dihydroisoindolo[l ,2-b]quinazolin- 12(10H)-one (1p), and 2-amino-7,8-methylenedioxy-10,12-dihydroisoindolo[l ,2-b]quinazolin-12(10H)-one (1ab) exhibited good inhibitory activities against HL-60 cell lines as well as induction of topo II-mediated DNA cleavage activities.
