Notes: Abstract. We report a case of fetus-in-fetu located in the scrotal sac of a newborn male infant. Plain radiography (including specimen radiography), ultrasonography and MRI clearly demonstrated vertebral column, ribs, skull, pelvic bones, femurs and a portion of tibiae and humeri. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination.

Notes: Abstract. Two cases of rare lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC) of the pancreas are presented. Although the histogenesis of this lesion is not known, it can be histologically differentiated from other pancreatic and retropancreatic cysts. The importance of its recognition is in the distinction from cystic neoplasm of the pancreas.

Notes: Abstract Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) possessing the ability to solubilize insoluble inorganic phosphate were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of wheat. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the solubilization of phosphate by a known PSB, Enterobacter agglomerans, and by a genetically manipulated bacterium, Escherichia coli. A second laboratory study investigated the release of P from E. agglomerans compared with known acids. For the first laboratory study, a cosmid (pHC79) library of phosphate-solubilizing gene(s) from E. agglomerans chromosome DNA was constructed in E. coli JM109. The clone JM109 (pKKY) showing phosphate solubilization properties was screened on standard medium containing hydroxyapatite (HY). The P concentration significantly increased at 5 and 10 days for JM109 (pKKY) compared with JM109 (pHC79), the control. Although the P concentration increased, there was no significant change in their pHs. Furthermore, an increase in colony-forming units (CFUs) was seen at 5 and 10 days for JM109 (pKKY) but not for JM109 (pHC79). Artificial acidification of the culture medium with HCl, citric acid, oxalic acid, and lactic acid was achieved by shaking for 48h. Acidification with these selected acids solubilized more HY than E. agglomerans growing for 42h at similar pHs. However, a high P concentration was measured in culture medium with E. agglomerans growing for 84h despite similar pHs. Our results suggest that acid production may play an important role in HY solubilization, but is not the sole reason for the increase in P concentration in culture medium.

Notes: Abstract Coral surfaces are often colonized by bacteria and other microbes that may be pathogenic as well as surface-fouling. To test the hypothesis that corals possess antimicrobial properties, both polar and non-polar extracts from eight species of gorgonian corals were assayed against five species of bacteria. Antimicrobial activity was most apparent in the non-polar fractions, which inhibited bacterial growth in all but one of the 40 interactions assayed (8 coralsx5 bacteria). Polar extracts were effective in less than 40% (14/40) of the interactions assayed. The levels of antimicrobial activity varied significantly among the gorgonian corals and was also dependent on the species of bacteria. Generally, marine bacteria were less sensitive to the extracts than were non-marine species. Differences in selerite content among the gorgonians did not influence the levels of extract antimicrobial activity.

Notes: Abstract An analysis based on a model of modified mixing length by Hornby, Mistry und Barrow [1] was made on the effect of transverse convex curvature in turbulent boundary layer for incompressible axial flows along circular cylinders. The deviation of various turbulent flow and heat transfer properties from those of flat plates is presented. The agreement between the analyses and the experimental results for skin friction and heat transfer rate is good. The study demonstrated that, for a given condition, both the friction coefficient and Stanton number increase with decreasing value of the cyclinder radius and that their values are always greater than those for the flow over a flat plate.

Notes: Abstract The South Korean government carried out reforms in the occupational medical examination program over a period of 2 years from 1997 to 1998 in a response to the discontent of workers, who had complained that occupational medical examinations were merely ritualistic and unproductive. The purposes of this manuscript are to describe the reason for the remodeling, with a historical review of the existing occupational medical examination program in South Korea, and to discuss the main issues involved in remodeling the program. The existing occupational medical examination program in South Korea was reviewed and criticized. The basic philosophy and the main issues in remodeling South Korea's occupational medical examination program were also discussed. In conclusion, the occupational medical examination program should not be conducted in a uniform manner according to legal regulations, but should be a part of overall occupational health services. Individual workplaces should be given the autonomy to perform medical examinations according to the characteristics of the workplace. An enabling approach based on the participation of labor and management should be taken into consideration.

Notes: Abstract  Using light microscopy and immunocytochemistry, we investigated the morphological changes of retinal tissues and the reaction of Müller cells in the ischemic rat retina induced by increasing intraocular pressure. At early stages (from 1 h to 24 h after reperfusion), cells in the ganglion cell layer and in the inner nuclear layer showed some degenerative changes, but at later stages (from 72 h to 4 weeks) marked degenerative changes occurred in the outer nuclear layer (ONL). At 4 weeks after reperfusion, the ONL was reduced to 1 or 2 cell layers. Immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) appeared in the endfeet and distal processes of Müller cells as of 1 h after reperfusion. GFAP immunoreactivity in Müller cells increased up to 2 weeks and then decreased at 4 weeks after reperfusion. Our findings suggest that Müller cells are involved in the pathophysiology of retinal ischemia through the expression of GFAP. The degree of GFAP expression in Müller cells closely correlated with that of the degeneration of retinal neurons.

Notes: Summary The anti-influenza effects of camostat, a serine protease inhibitor, on in vivo influenza infections were evaluated. Mice which received non-adapted human influenza viruses intranasally, developed a reproducible infection with very low mortality. The infection was readily detected by the recovery of the virus from an oropharyngeal swab. Five-week-old ICR mice received intraperitoneal injections of saline (control), amantadine (known positive drug), or camostat, after infection with influenza A/Taiwan/1/86 virus. Virus detection was performed on day 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 of postinfection. Both camostat and amantadine were effective in ameliorating mouse influenza. On day 5, mice injected with camostat (45%) or amantadine (50%) showed a lower virus secreting rate than those receiving saline (90%). Additionally, camostat showed strong anti-influenza effects on an amantadine-resistant type A virus and a type B virus infection in vitro. The results show that blocking the hemagglutinin cleavage is an effective target for development of an anti-influenza agent. They also demonstrate that virus detection from the oropharynx of mice, infected with non-adapted virus, is a useful in vivo influenza model.

Notes: Summary We have reviewed 25 cases of vascularised osteocutaneous fibular transfers carried out between 1982 and 1988. The patients all had chronic osteomyelitis of the tibia, with extensive bone loss and associated soft tissue defects, following severely comminuted fractures. Union of the grafted bone could be seen in radiographs taken 3 to 4 months after operation. The results were generally satisfactory, but there were some complications.
