Notes: Abstract  On the basis of an evolutionary concept of language it was postulated that activation of the motor systems for arm movements, which are phylogenetically older, should facilitate language processes. In aphasic subjects picture naming can be improved by a concomitant movement of the dominant arm. In the present study it was investigated whether a similar facilitation can be observed in normal subjects by studying the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on picture naming latencies. Suprathreshold focal TMS was applied to the left motor cortex for proximal arm muscles in right-handed subjects. The effects were compared with TMS of Wernicke’s area. While TMS of the motor cortex and the non-dominant temporal lobe had no facilitatory effects, TMS of Wernicke’s area decreased picture naming latencies significantly when TMS preceded picture presentation by 500 or 1000 ms. The observed effects depended on the intensity of the stimulus used. While clearly present with intensities of 35% and 55% of maximum output the facilitation disappeared with higher stimulation intensities. It is concluded that focal magnetic stimulation is able to facilitate lexical processes due to a general preactivation of language-related neuronal networks when delivered over Wernicke’s area.

Notes: Summary The 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) zymogram phenotypes of wheat, rye and their aneuploid derivatives were determined. Two genes involved in the production of 6-PGD isozymes were located on chromosome arms CRL (4 RL) and FRL (6 RL) of “Imperial” rye. On the basis of differential interactions between wheat and rye chromosomes, evidence was obtained that genes located on chromosomes 6 A, 6 BL and 7 BL control 6-PGD isozyme activities in ‘Chinese Spring’ wheat. The wheat and rye 6-PGD zymogram phenotypes were indicative of homoeologous relationships between rye chromosome 6 RL to wheat chromosomes of group 6, and rye chromosome 4 RL to wheat chromosomes of group 7.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Portal hypertension often complicates extrahepatic biliary atresia and may result in life-threatening variceal bleeding. In more than 30% of cases, variceal bleeding cannot be controlled sufficiently by medicinal treatment and sclerotherapy. In these cases a portosystemic shunt can reduce portal hypertension. The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is implanted using interventional radiological techniques. In comparison to a surgical portosystemic shunt, this method has a reduced mortality, and liver transplantation can be performed in patients with TIPS without impairment of transplant function and overall prognosis. The method is well established in adult patients but there is only little experience concerning TIPS implantation in children. We present a girl with extrahepatic biliary atresia. At the age of 86/12 years the patient presented with variceal bleeding refractory to sclerotherapy. Since no donor organ was available at that time TIPS was implanted. The procedure was performed successfully at the second attempt and portal hypertension significantly reduced. Liver transplantation was performed without complications three months later. Discussion: We suggest that TIPS should be the method of choice in the treatment of variceal bleeding refractory to sclerotherapy in children waiting for liver transplantation.

Notes: Summary The investigation of language comprehension in aphasics has usually been concerned only with the word and sentence levels. It has not been considered that language in the normal communicative situation has the character of discourse. Furthermore, language understanding should be conceived of as comprising different processes of comprehension which can be selectively affected in aphasia. It was therefore necessary to compose a test for text comprehension. In this test the patient is read a short text and then required to choose that picture from a multiple-choice set which is most appropriate to the story. Texts and pictures were developed according to the linguistic parameters: agent/experiencer, action, situation, metaphorical comment. With the tasks kept uniform this test allows not only quantitative but also qualitative statistical evaluation. Preliminary results show that the test reveals qualitative differences between subtypes of aphasia.

Notes: Abstract Electron induced desorption of hydrogen on polycrystalline platinum has been studied in continuation of former work. The results remain consistent with a supposed adsorption model implying that electron induced H+ emission is restricted to hydrogen adsorbed only at particular sites occupying not more than 1 per cent coverage. These sites are ascribed to characteristic and stable surface impurities which are not influenced by the improved target treatment applied. Depletion of sites by sputter cleaning is cancelled by recovery during annealing. The highest observed H+ yield (all available sites filled with hydrogen) is 2 · 10−5 ions per electron. The total cross section for desorption by electron impact is 2 · 10−17 cm2. Complex interaction phenomena between the electrons and the hydrogen covered platinum surface have been observed.

Notes: Abstract High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO) films were grown by means of pulsed-laser deposition on 10° off-axis oriented (001) SrTiO3 substrates. The films exhibit a step-like morphology and they are properly oriented along the (001) direction. Their normal-state resistivity measured along the tilt (off-axis (100) direction of the substrate) was, typically, 260 times higher than that along the (010) direction. Such films reveal a transverse Seebeck-effect which significantly exceeds that observed with YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO).
