Notes: Summary Using the indirect immunofluorescent technique with anti-somatostatin serum, the distribution of scattered cells in the duct system of submandibular glands in the Monkey, Macaca irus has been assessed. In both males and females, these cells are located only in some portions of the duct system, e.g. striated ducts and excretory ducts. No immunoreactive cells were observed in the intercalated ducts or in secretory endpieces. The lymphatic node constantly adjacent to the submandibular gland did not contain immunoreactive cells. In the parotid glands, no immunoreactive cells to antisomatostatin immuneserum were ever observed

Notes: Summary The quantitation of electron dense labelling is very tedious when it is done “by hand”. Accordingly we developed software allowing, at electron microscopic level, a semi-automatic counting of dense markers in biological specimens. It includes the digitization of images and extraction of dense particles from the grey level of the background. The definition of the areas of interest was carried out by the observer but all quantitative calculations were done automatically. This method was applied to different biological materials (phospholipid and lysozyme labelling in secretory granules of human submucosal bronchial gland cells). The results obtained by this semi-automatic procedure were in good agreement with those obtained by manual counting of colloïdal gold labelling (r=0.97).

Notes: Summary Seven new homozygous cases of hereditary triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) deficiency have been detected in five unrelated families. Two of the families originate in France, the others from Algeria, Yugoslavia, and Morocco. Only the parents coming from Algeria and Morocco were first cousins. In the other parents no evidence of consanguinity was found. All seven patients exhibited the same symptoms, i.e. hemolytic anemia appearing very early after birth associated with pregressive neuromuscular symptoms. Expression of the deficiency is heterogeneous; this had previously been pointed out in the previously reported cases of TPI deficiency. Red cell TPI activity was 3 to 4% of the normal mean in the patients and 50 to 60% in the parents. The latter did not exhibit any clinical symptoms. The levels of red cell glycolytic intermediates and the characteristics of the mutated TPI could be studied in four of the patients only. Substantial increases of red cell dihydroxyacetone phosphate and of fructose 1,6-diphosphate, normal Km of TPI for glyceraldehyde phosphate, and thermoinstability of the enzyme were found. In addition the electrophoretic pattern showed no significant modification of the mobility of the TPI bands, but abnormal decreased staining of the two more anodal bands.

Notes: Abstract We present the first ultrastructural study of liver and spleen from a 20-week fetus with Niemann-Pick disease type C in correlation with lipid studies of these tissues. The lipid storage pattern was characteristic of the disease and although the distribution of the lipid storage was similar to that of affected children, ultrastructural studies emphasized that many inclusions were qualitatively different. These are discussed. Concomitant with this complex lipid storage, ultrastructural evidence of cholestasis was observed and the early hyperplasia of pericanalicular microfilaments leads us to question the presence of a toxic metabolite which might induce cholestasis by acting upon microfilaments.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a technique for the automatic adaptation of a canonical facial model to data obtained by a 3D laser scanner. The facial model is a B-spline surface with 13×16 control points. We introduce a technique by which this canonical model is fit to the scanned data and that takes into consideration the requirements for the animation of facial expressions. The animation of facial expressions is based on the facial action coding system (FACS). Using B-splines in combination with FACS, we automatically create the impression of a moving skin. To increase the realism of the animation we map textural information onto the B-spline surface.

Notes: Summary In 22 pure GH cell adenomas and 9 mixed GH cell-prolactin cell adenomas with acromegaly, we compare the morphological and functional data (secretory activity and granular appearance) with GH levels (radioimmunoassays) in the blood and in the tumor. According to morphological criteria, the secretory activity is marked in 13 cases (Group I), mild in 9 cases (Group II), and weak in 9 others (Group III). The mean values of the plasma GH levels in the 3 groups (80 ng/ml±22; 26.5 ng/ml±2; and 16.89 ng/ml±2 respectively) are significantly different. In 17 densely granulated adenomas and 14 sparsely granulated adenomas, the plasma GH values were very variable. The mean levels of these 2 groups (49.76 ng/ml±22 and 41.8 ng/ml±7.8 respectively) are not significantly different. The GH concentrations in the tumor were also very variable (358 to 78,900 ng/mg). Their highly significant relationship with the granular appearance is an indirect proof of the granular localisation of GH. We distinguish between 4 functional aspects of the GH cell adenoma which define the different levels of synthesis, storage, and excretion. The secretory activity of the GH adenomatous cell varies with the adenomas and differs from that of the normal cell.

Notes: Summary A case of Farber disease is reported and the ultrastructural pathology of the disease is reviewed. The present case showed the typical clinical picture of Farber disease. Acid ceramidase deficiency was demonstrated biochemically. Ultrastructural features of one subcutaneous nodule and a skin biopsy are described. Three lysosomal inclusions characterize Farber disease: curvilinear tubular bodies observed mainly in the reticuloendothelial system, “banana bodies” recorded only in the peripheral nervous system and zebra-like bodies which are essentially a neuronal storage. The nature of each is discussed and the skin biopsy is emphasized for its important diagnostic interest.

Notes: Summary In the series of homologousω, ω′-bis-(ammoniumalkoxy)-polymethylenes, the curarizing potency is not primarily correlated to the whole chain length between the nitrogen atoms, but is determined by the nature of the middle section, -(CH2) n -, of the molecule and to a lesser degree by the substituents, (RRR), of the nitrogen atoms.

Description / Table of Contents: Background In addition to standard X-rays, photographic documentation, cephalometric and model analysis, a computer-aided, three-dimensional (3D) simulation system has been developed in close cooperation with the Institute of Communications of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. With this simulation system a photorealistic prediction of the expected soft tissue changes can be made. Prerequisites are a 3D reconstruction of the facial skeleton and a 3D laser scan of the face. After data reduction, the two data sets can be matched. Cutting planes enable the transposition of bony segments. The laser scan of the facial surface is combined with the underlying bone via a five-layered soft tissue model to convert bone movements on the soft tissue cover realistically. Conclusion Further research is necessary to replace the virtual subcutaneous soft tissue model by correct, topographic tissue anatomy.

Notes: Abstract: The 104,106,108Ru nuclei have been produced as fission fragments following the fusion reaction 28Si + 176Yb at 145 MeV bombarding energy; prompt gamma rays emitted in the reaction were detected using the Eurogam II array. Their high-spin level schemes have been obtained, particularly several side bands have been extended or newly observed. Experimental results are discussed in the framework of both collective model and the rotating mean-field approach in which the Gogny force is the sole input. These calculations provide very good descriptions of both low-spin and high-spin structures observed in the neutron-rich even-A Ru isotopes.
