Abstract: Brain Theory From A Circuits And Systems Perspective offers a theory of human consciousness as a natural result of pulsating neurons and synapses within a complex circuit. The book summarizes the electrical, as opposed to the chemical, nature of a brain, and so moves away from customary molecular biology- and biochemistry-focused explanations for consciousness.℗ The book goes beyond the usual structures of artificial neural networks; employing first principles, a particular physical system is synthesized for conscious short term memory, as well as for associative (subconsciously edited) long term memory.℗ It pursues the search for deeper computational power:℗ Where ordinary concepts of logic fail to explain inspired choices concerning artistic appraisal, truth judgment, and understanding, pulsating qubit logic unleashes a fresh avenue for connectivity. Neuroquantology is discussed,℗ including electron tunneling as a regulator of neural actions, and proposed quantum computing within microtubules.℗ This thought provoking work led the author to reveal neurons with qubit properties, or simulated qubits.℗ Simulated qubits do not require a coherent quantum system, and so remain robust for massively parallel controlled toggling and probabilistic computations. Brain Theory From A Circuits And Systems Perspective is supported with physical circuit examples, end-of-chapter exercises, and neuron simulation experiments, and will be valuable to anyone interested in neuro-circuits, neuro-systems and qubits

Abstract: This volume aims to provide clear and detailed methods to probe glutamate receptor function. Chapters in this book feature methods to study synaptic ultrastructure, receptor dynamics/receptor interactions and trafficking, cellular plasticity, receptor gene regulation, epigenetics, and clinical applications. In addition, it includes overview chapters that provide critical reviews and historical perspectives on particular techniques and fields of study. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Glutamate Receptors: Methods and Protocols covers well-established glutamate receptor techniques, as well as new and cutting-edge techniques designed so that students, researchers, and clinicians can gain an understanding of the issues surrounding each experimental technique and its potential applications

Notes: Summary A 48-year-old homosexual with contacts in different countries, including Haiti, presented with multiple pigmented or bluish nodules on both lower legs and upper arms. He had a history of secondary syphilis, hepatitis B and herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Biopsies of the skin tumors revealed a typical Kaposi's sarcoma of low grade malignancy. The endothelial origin of the tumor was indicated by the presence of specific endothelial organelles (Weibel-Palade bodies) in the cytoplasma of the tumor cells. Erythrocytophagocytosis was found in tumor cells within and without the vascular channels. Laboratory tests were compatible with the clinical diagnosis of an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) with a helper: suppressor T-lymphocyte ratio of 0.28 and a cutaneous anergy. In the course of the illness tumors of the stomach and duodenum were detected. Histology showed a malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma of high grade malignancy. Within weeks the patient died in a cachectic state. Autopsy revealed a Kaposi's sarcoma of the skin with metastases in the stomach and a wide-spread malignant lymphoma in the gastrointestinal tract, in several visceral organs and in many lymph nodes.

Notes: Abstract. Lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, selenium, and manganese concentrations were measured in the breast feathers of 25 pairs of Franklin's Gulls (Larus pipixcan) and in their eggs from a breeding colony at Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Northwestern Minnesota. Metal concentrations in eggs represent metals sequestered in the egg by females at the time of egg formation; while metal concentrations in parents represent concentrations of metals in the blood supply at the time of feather formation. There were no significant sexual differences in metal concentrations in feathers, assuming the male to be larger of each pair, but there were significant differences between the concentrations of metals in parents and their eggs. Eggs had significantly higher concentrations of selenium and chromium, but significantly lower concentrations of all other metals than the feathers of their parents. There were few significant correlations among metal concentrations within the egg or within the feather of females, but there were correlations for the feathers of males. Lead and cadmium in feathers were positively correlated for both males and females. Chromium concentrations in eggs were generally higher than reported in the literature. The concentrations in eggs and the feathers of females were positively correlated for mercury, and negatively correlated for chromium and manganese.

Notes: Summary Uredospores of Puccinia graminis were germinated on a liquid medium containing coumarin. We followed changes in enzyme activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate isomerase as a function of time of incubation. Contrary to the enzymes in germinating spores of saprophytic fungi the total activities of all three enzymes declined clearly after a short lasting rise during the first or the first 2 h of incubation. 12 h after the beginning of the experiment the total activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and of glucose-6-phosphate isomerase had declined even below the level of not incubated spores. The specific acitivities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate isomerase stayed nearly constant during the time of the experiment, whereas the specific activity of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase increased. The specific activities of these enzymes found in uredospores of Puccinia graminis are considerably higher compared to those found in saprophytic fungi.
