    Notes: Summary Allosuppressor (sal) mutations enhance the efficiency of the yeast ochre suppressor SUQ5 and define five unlinked loci, SALT-SALS. A number of sal4 mutants were isolated and found to have pleiotropic, allele;specific phenotypes, including hypersensitivity in vivo to paromomycin and other antibiotics that stimulate translational errors in yeast. To examine further the nature of the SAL4 gene product, the wild type SAL4 gene was isolated by complementation of a conditional lethal allele sal4-2, and demonstrated to be a single copy gene encoding a single 1.6 kb transcript. Restriction mapping and DNA hybridisation analysis were used to demonstrate that the SAL4 gene is identical to the previously identified omnipotent suppressor gene SUP45 (SUPT). Our results implicate the SAL4 gene product as playing a major role in maintaining translational accuracy in yeast.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Dans la plupart des cas d'hyperparathyroïdie (HPT) persistante ou récidivante, la glande parathyroïdienne (PT) pathologique responsable se trouve souvent dans le cou ou est au moins accessible par une incision cervicale. Il est rare qu'une sternotomie médiane soit nécessaire. Nous présentons 3 cas d'HPT persistante dans lesquels la glande PT restante se trouvait dans le médiastin moyen. Nous reconnaissons qu'il s'agit d'une éventualité rare qui ne peut être expliquée par l'embryologie classique. Dans les cas où une exploration médiastinale réglée est nécessaire, il faut, pour être complet, ne pas oublier d'explorer le médiastin moyen pour exclure toute possibilité d'existence de tissu PT ectopique.
    Abstract: Resumen En la mayoría de los casos de hiperparatiroidismo persistente o recurrente la glándula patológica se encuentra en el cuello o es accessible por un abordaje cervical, y sólo en un mínimo porcentaje se hace necesario realizar esternotomía. Presentamos 3 casos de hiperpartiroidismo persistente en los cuales el tejido paratiroideo anormal fue hallado en el mediastino medio, posterior al arco aórtico pero anterior a la carina y a los bronquios principales. Reconocemos que este es un hallazgo raro y que no puede ser adecuadamente explicado a la luz de los conocimientos embriológicos ordinarios. En casos que requieran exploracíon mediastinal formal, la exploración no puede ser considerada como completa a menos que el mediastino medio sea cuidadosamente inspeccionado a fín de excluir la presencia de tejido paratiroideo ectópico.
    Notes: Abstract In most cases of persistent or recurrent hyperparathyroidism (HPT), the pathological parathyroid (PT) will be in the neck or accessible through the cervical approach, and in only a small percentage will median sternotomy be required. We present 3 cases of persistent HPT where the PT tissue was in the middle mediastinum. We acknowledge that this is a rare occurrence and that it cannot be explained adequately by standard embryological teaching. In cases requiring formal mediastinal exploration, the mediastinal exploration is not complete unless the middle mediastinum is carefully explored to exclude ectopic PT tissue.

    Notes: Summary Increasing information on the internal structure of north Queensland fringing reefs shows that many have developed true reefal structures only since mid-Holocence times, over rapidly accumulated non-reefal sediments. The reefal veneer consists mainly of head corals and is generally less than 7 m in thickness. Early reef flat development may have been at a level slightly higher than modern sea level.

    Notes: Abstract   Glutathione (GSH) is an abundant cellular thiol which has been implicated in numerous cellular processes and in protection against stress caused by xenobiotics, carcinogens and radiation. Our experiments address the requirement for GSH in yeast, and its role in protection against oxidative stress. Mutants which are unable to synthesis GSH due to a gene disruption in GSH 1, encoding the enzyme for the first step in the biosynthesis of GSH, require exogenous GSH for growth under non-stress conditions. Growth can also be restored with reducing agents containing a sulphydryl group, including dithiothreitol, β-mercaptoethanol and cysteine, indicating that GSH is essential only as a reductant during normal cellular processes. In addition, the GSH 1-disruption strain is sensitive to oxidative stress caused by H2O2 and tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The requirement for GSH in protection against oxidative stress is analogous to that in higher eukaryotes, but unlike the situation in bacteria where it is dispensable for growth during both normal and oxidative stress conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Screening of a promoter probe gene bank for DNA sequences that could act as inducible promoters following growth on non-fermentable carbon sources led to the identification of the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene (COX1) as an active sequence. Carbon-source regulation of this promoter was confirmed by a β-galactosidase assay which showed a 31- and 180-fold induction of expression after growth on ethanol or lactate-based media respectively. Two elements matching the CCAAT-binding-factor motif, which is involved in activating transcription on non-fermentable carbon sources, were identified in the putative promoter. Expression was found to be reduced to low levels in otherwise isogenic hap3 and hap4 mutant strains. Thus, this mitochondrial DNA when placed in the nucleus can act as a promoter that is subject to strict carbon-source regulation. These observations are discussed both with respect to the origin of the S. cerevisiae COX1 gene in particular and with respect to the origin of introns in general.

    Notes: Abstract A procedure for the instrumental neutron activation analysis of Cd in soils with relatively high Cd content and possible inteferences is reported. Cadmium concentrations in Jamaican soils above 4 mg·kg−1 can now be reliably determined by multielemental instrumental activation analysis with an accuracy ±10% and the reasonably high throughput of 30 samples per day. Over 600 geochemical survey samples were analysed for Cd along with some 20 other long-lived elements.

    Notes: Abstract The biological standard reference materials Orchard Leaves SRM 1571 and Oyster Tissue SRM 1566a was analysed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) at the International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences, Jamaica at (ICEN) and at the Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN-CNEN/SP), Brazil. The comparison of the results with those obtained with the more powerful reactor are used to evaluate the possibilities of INAA for the analysis of biological samples at ICENS. The detection limits, the precision and accuracy of the results obtained in both laboratories are compared. The advantages and disadvantages of the different irradiation facilities are discussed. Some results obtained for Jamaican biological samples are also presented.

    Notes: Abstract The International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) has been involved in conducting multipurpose geochemical surveys, the results of which were published in "A Geochemical Atlas of Jamaican Soils". The primary analytical tool for these studies was neutron activation analysis (NAA) using the SLOWPOKE-2 reactor at the Centre. The neutron flux of the SLOWPOKE-2 reactor is extremely stable, thus allowing a semi-absolute method for quantitative NAA. This has several advantages, but requires preparation and measurement of the single- or multi-element standards for each gamma-spectroscopy system (GSS). The NAA laboratory at ICENS operates three GSSs. The primary ("master") GSS was standardized using single element standards for over 50 elements, naturally occurring in most geological and biological materials. The standardization of the secondary GSS's was achieved by transferring of the elemental sensitivities of the master GSS using an instrumentation-free standardization approach. The paper describes the implementation of this methodology and its utilization in the routine analytical work.
