    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé. Nous avons proposé une approche intervertébrale à un seul niveau pour décomprimer deux racines de nerfs adjacents ipsilatérales qui étaient impliquées. Cette opération a été réalisée dans 4 cas de radiculopathie cervicale impliquant deux racines de nerfs adjacents. Nous avons effectué une discectomie, une corporectomie partielle et l’ablation de la partie antéromédiale des pédicules ainsi que l’ablation des ostéophytes et du ligament longitudinal postérieur, qui ont été suivies d’une fusion intercorporéale. Il y a eu une diminution de la douleur chez tous les patients et/ou une certaine faiblesse motrice. La fusion rachidienne a été obtenue aves un alignement lordosique normal, sans aucune complication pour l’ensemble des patients. Nous désirons mettre l’accent sur les avantages de cette technique: elle peut conserver le segment en mouvement au niveau d’un disque supplémentaire et elle peut aussi avoir un taux de fusion meilleur qu’une arthrodise corporéale à plusieurs étages.
    Notes: Summary. We describe a single level intervertebral approach to decompress two adjacent involved nerve roots in cases of cervical spondylosis. The operation was undertaken in 4 patients. We carried out discectomy, partial excision of the vertebral body with removal of the anteromedial part of the pedicles, removal of osteophytes and excision of the posterior longitudinal ligament, followed by an anterior interbody fusion. Fusion was achieved with the spine in normal lordosis and without complications. Pain and motor weakness was relieved in every case. This procedure can maintain movement at one additional disc level and has a better fusion rate than multilevel interbody fusion.

    Notes: Abstract Xanthomonas campestris pv. translucens IFO13599 could produce xanthan gum (18.5 mg/100 mg, lactose) with lactose as the growth substrate in spite of a low level of β-galactosidase. This productivity corresponded to one-fifth that with glucose. This strain could also produce ice-nucleating material having an ice-nucleating temperature, T 50, of −2.8 °C with xanthan gum in the culture broth. We found that this strain produced both materials in whey medium from which the insoluble components had been removed. The production of xanthan with ice-nucleating material reached a maximum after cultivation for 168 h under optimum conditions. Furthermore, the xanthan obtained had a low viscosity because of its variant structure revealed, by TLC and HPLC analyses, to be lacking pyruvic acid. Furthermore, we concluded that this mixture had considerable potential as a regeneratic agent, when compared to other regeneratic agents such as carboxymethylcellulose.

    Notes: Summary The ontogenetic development of catecholamine (CA)-and LHRH-containing nerve endings in the median eminence of the rat was investigated by combining fluorescence histochemistry and immunohistochemistry in the same tissue section. LHRH-terminals appeared earlier than CA-terminals and were already detectable in the lateral part of the external layer of the central ME on the first day after birth. CA-nerve endings were first seen in a corresponding region of the ME on the seventh postnatal day. At this stage both types of terminals showed the earliest manifestation of a correlative pattern of their distribution. Subsequently the development of both types of nerve endings proceeded rapidly, and at 14 days their distribution pattern corresponded to that in adult animals. The authors conclude that at this stage the CA-neurons play a constant and significant role in the release of LHRH into the portal capillaries. The correlation between both types of nerve endings and the ontogenetic development of the capillary plexuses of the hypophysial portal system is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Wettability of electrolytically oxidized graphite fibers has been investigated by contact angle measurements employing the Wilhelmy method. The atomic ratio of oxygen to carbon, O/C, in the surface layer of the graphite fiber increased with increasing electric specific charge. Contact angle hysteresis was not observed for the untreated graphite fiber (O/C=0.01). The contact angles decreased with increasing O/C, especially for the receding angle, and approached constant for O/C〉0.2. The nondispersive and dispersive surface free energies of the oxidized graphite fibers were calculated from the experimentally determined contact angles. The nondispersive surface free energy increased by the oxidation, whereas the dispersive one decreased. From the results of surface analysis, it was found that the changes in the nondispersive and dispersive surface free energies were caused by the increase in O/C ratio and the decrease in surface crystallinity, respectively.
