    Notes: Abstract Under certain conditions polyethylene coatings can be peeled off from steel substrates together with a previously formed oxide scale. After a certain oxidizing treatment (ageing) and an ohmic contacting, the obtained PE/FeO x -compound foil serves as an excellent humidity sensor. The composition of the iron oxide layer of said sensor-active compound foil was analysed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. This layer was found to consist of hematite (ca 30%) and off-stoichiometric spinel Fe3−x O4 compounds (ca 70%). The content of the vacancies [1,2] nearly doubles with oxidizing treatment. This effect corresponds fairly to the conductivity and the sensor properties of the samples, respectively.
